The comments section is a safe place to express your emotions. Anyone that is brave enough to share their struggles, please do so, and you will be supported and cheered on by myself and this lovely student community ❤️ To start us off, I failed my Health Systems midterm last semester... This was my first failed grade in pharmacy school. I felt so alone, but after talking to my friends, I found out that many of them failed too. I needed to pass this class, so I re-evaluated my strategy and put more effort into a class that I didn't necessarily enjoy. I got a 90 on my essay, aced my final exam, and finished the class with an A. I couldn't have been more proud of myself. This is my story of rising up and overcoming adversity. What's yours?

*when I got a F on a maths test, my friends were around me and they said ‘How the hell did you fail this? It was soo easy like everyone else passed’ it made me feel even worse and I started silently crying in class because I’ve been scared of failure my entire life. I’ve learned this method from reading a book but you basically say “this is good because..” and try to find a lesson when you fail at something. So if you failed your Biochem exam you could say “this is good because now I know exactly what I need to work on before the final” it’s something small but if you’re consistent it can improve your mood greatly. Thanks for the tips Nathan 💜

It is this year that I found how important a role mental health plays on academic performance!!! Learning with anxiety lowers my productivity and interest for studying. I was just soooo afraid of failure before. Now I always ask myself "so what?", failed a test so what? I tried my best anyway! Surprisingly I am learning much more efficiently with a relaxing mood!!!

i have this exact problem. i get so anxious about a task or assignment or a test being so difficult that i end up avoiding it to the last minute, and only then do i realise i could have done it easily, except now i have to do it under a few hours before the deadline.
@otsukaharu4501
@otsukaharu4501 2 года назад
The worst thing is when you know exactly that you know all the answers, you understand the material and would have done well if you didn't have to do it in an anxiety-inducing exam situation. As soon as I am outside od the situation and am more relaxed I can pick out precisely what I did wrong in the situation. Then I am left thinking about these stupid mistakes that could have actually been avoided easily... Anyway, I did my final (uni) exams and the same thing happened again of course :'D I am sitting on hot coals right now and I keep ruminating on these mistakes even though I know I cannot change it now. It's in the past and I have to focus on the present and the future...

Sharing my story bcz I want to let it out. You guys don't have to read. So I always struggled from anxiety but during 1st year of my dental clg (this year), it's just got bad but I was coping well. But during my final exams (just recently, 2 months ago ), something traumatic triggered my anxiety. It was worse including panic attacks 24/7 & nightmares, insomnia as well. Didn't study properly, cried alot. During my anatomy exam, got the worst panic attack of my life, nobody noticed, no one care tho. So I just kept pushing myself. I never asked for help too, passed out during my last exam due to mental breakdown. Only were able to pass one exam out of 4 and I felt horrible so so horrible. Supplementary exams were scheduled just after 20 days but I was so broken to care. It was like the biggest failure of my life, always were a good student. My parents were disappointed too. It was hard. I literally hide in a room cried for a week, ghosted everyone. Started having suc!dal thoughts. It was too much, then my parents take me for professional help, anxiety medications were even more worst (they are now working for me) , didn't sleep for a week, get depression, I was in pain. Yeah but everything gets better so it did. I just wanted to end my suffering so I decided that I will try, basically it's my last chance to prevent dropout(still scary). My advice is that first step is to acknowledge your failure. It's not the end of the world. I stopped hiding, faced my failure, go through my mistakes, start preparing again. Now I'm done with one exam(it went soo well) and 2 more left. Not really anxious too. Doing better. Feel stronger than ever. And just wanna say Mental health is soo real, it really affects your life, your grades, your relationships. Please be kind to others and ask for help sooner. Don't suffer alone. Sending love

Tbh, I think the best advice I can give on this topic (as a student in hs who got straight As to a college student who does NOT lol) is these grades don’t really define you and your success. Yes it’s important to pass your class but In almost all stem fields, your work experience does not reflect your grades. Yes knowing the concept is important, but if you did not master your organic chemistry reactions it will be OK. Millions of students have been in your spot and were able to make it. As long as you can say you studied to your full capability then you have nothing to feel guilty for!!!
@NathanWu
@NathanWu 2 года назад
Absolutely! And as a real example of this, I don’t get perfect on all my exams but does that mean I’m failing my patients? Of course not! Communication and empathy is just as important as knowledge in the healthcare field

I was always an straight-A student until high school math rolled around. I still had A's in other classes so it wasn't too big of a deal. I was still proud of myself when I got B's as my final grade in math and just sorta felt neutral when I had C's. I recently got back my final grades for this semester and guess who got a D as their final grade in Trigonometry? It was hard to accept but this video made me feel a lot better and more determined to bounce back.

Breathe in, breathe out and remember that you need to put boundaries up for yourself as well. I remember getting a 6/10 when I started school. Usually 4/10 and sometimes 7/10 if I worked hard. I asked around, what others had recieved. Nobody had anything higher than a 7. I asked if the teacher had even graded a 10. Never. Once an 8, years ago. From that moment on, I just tried to forget about the grades and focus on what I was learning from it.

So many things went wrong, mental health got the best of me and was unable to attend most my classes but still turned up for pracs eventho half the time I have no idea what I’m doing. Everyone else beside me was doing well, was caught up with things and has a part time job. Now instead of me trying to make them my inspiration, what I did is blame myself and down myself as to why I can’t be like them. Hey guys! I’m just in middle school but I felt the need to watch this video because that’s just the person I am and I long for academic validation. Anywho I am failing band. A class I honestly forgot I was in and now I am paying the price from my average dropping from a 99.875 to a 91 (38 in band). I just wanted to say that even though it SUCKS to get a band grade in school. You can bounce back from it, get a better grade then everyone else, (or drop the class like me:)) and prove to yourself and everyone else that you are way better than that measly 38! Okay thx for ya time love you all byeee🖤🤎💛❤️

I'm struggling in math right now and I got an F in that class due to the work I haven't turned in, but it's because I don't know how to do the work yet, I've asked for help many times by both my friends, family and teachers but they never help. Watching this video and reading comments made me feel so much better about failing, I'm telling myself to study more and I'm slowly getting better at it. I'm in 7th grade and I really want good grades, not just for my family but for myself because It makes me feel so much better inside that I did it. Thank you for this video!

Thank you so much for this. I really needed it. I’ve been having a lot of bad habits that has been sabotaging my life and it affects my studies as well. I just took a Biochemistry exam today and it really felt like shit. Ive been having a lot of brainfog from being in a bad state of mind and even though I put in some hours in studying, it never felt enough. The day before the paper, I felt so tired and I had so much brainfog which gave me bad memories of exams in the past where I was having severely bad brainfog and i was failing my papers no matter what I do and it happens way too often and it just makes me feel terrible as if I am not competent enough to ever fix my problems. My severe brainfog has happened for my paper again today and the paper being challenging did not feel any better and now i feel terrible today. I know grades does not indicate intelligence but knowing that my incompetency in getting my shit together hurts. I really hope I have a miracle for my exam today but historically, i never got it

Great points made, Nathan. I particularly like how you emphasise that if you are going to challenge your mark have your evidence to support your argument. I need this so much. Just this morning, I had 2 attempts for a quiz and I had a lower grade in the last attempt than the first one. It made me so sad because this isn't the first time it happened. It's been 3 weeks at most since I noticed that I wasn't doing as great as I had in school. It's even more challenging that I see my classmates get perfect scores. I can't even evaluate what I did wrong because I have so many subjects that after one test I have another. I'm also the leader in a lot of projects because my classmates don't want to. I'm so stressed I feel like crying any time. Edit: Thank you so much! After I finished this video I had a class and I was in a better mood that earlier. Your words really helped me try to participate. Hope the best for you!

Late last year I moved to Argentina to go to medical school. Here you have to complete a basic cycle of math, chem, bio… that lasts a year but people usually complete in a year and a half. I decided to finish it in a semester, so I could start med at the beginning of this year, and I *almost* made it. I passed five of six classes, but failing the one means I can’t start med school until next year because of how my university is organized. It was such a huge hit and to be honest I still haven’t processed it completely. I felt lost, guilty, like a failure. I could’ve passed that exam but I didn’t study enough. I could’ve done it, but I didn’t. I don’t know how to forgive myself yet, but I know I’ll survive this. Plans have changed before and I’ve made it through. It sucks, and I can’t stop thinking about how much better everything would be if I had passed. But I didn’t. Shit happens. I’ll be a wonderful doctor one day, someway, somehow, no matter how much this part of the journey sucks

sometimes you gotta take a low score or any failure as a step towards improvement on yourself. It can be a wake up call to if your study habits need change and luckily there are so many different habits to try and incorporate into your routine! I learned to not let set backs hold me down for so long. It’s painful at first because you’re inevitably disappointed. The first step is intimidating because you don’t know if you’re heading in the right direction. But I learned to stay determined and use my resources. It is so important to keep up the rhythm as well. It’s comforting to have peers and professors help out. You’re never alone!

❗️you don’t have to read this, it’s just me basically venting.❤️ I’m in fifth grade (yes, I’m young, I know.) and I’m usually always B’s and A’s. This year though, towards the end of the year, I’m falling behind and I really don’t know what to do because I don’t know how to tell people I’m struggling or dealing with stuff. I feel like they are teaching everything really fast-paste and I can’t keep up or remember anything so I’ve been getting 50-70’s on my grades and it’s really breaking my mental health. I stay up so late either studying on a subject or just crying in my room because I don’t know what else to do. I know it’s 5th grade and it’s not that important, but i still feel like such a failure bc I’ve always been a good kid and now I’m getting these grades which is making my parents disappointed. Thanks to school, I’ve been doing sh and having su!c!dal thoughts. I really don’t know what to do. Not only that, we get a big grade back on a test tomorrow so I’m literally sobbing bc I’m so terrified to see what my score is. I already know it’ll be a bad score bc barley any of the questions made sense.

Today, for the first time in my life, I got a D on my math test. I made silly mistakes like boxing the wrong thing or getting confused with signs. I was sooooo upset I almost broke my 7-year record and cried at school. When I came home I broke down and my mom and I had a talk. We decided that I need to stop stressing so much because I know the topic but I get so worried during the test. Anyway, new experience! I NEVER want it to happen again. And the worst part is, unlike all my other classes(since I'm in 7th grade) I'm taking Algebra 1 so it appears on my permanent record. The good thing is that my final grade is an 85%... I know it's not the best but it's still pretty good so! Surprising how well my computer knows me since this was the first time I ever got something like this on my fyp.

My advice when you are taking an exam (during an exam that your teacher gives you, not an official exam): take your time answering the questions because you are graded upon accuracy, not speed. Doing this technique, I rarely get less than 98% on a test. Also, don’t ever study only overnight because you need to take your time “absorbing” the content.

I'm crying right now. Ever since grade 1 they always call me "bright kid" but I wonder if I am really intelligent then why did i enter kinder twice? Ever since grade 1 they always complicate me, to the point I think everything is on my side. Until high school came, I met different students. I am scared and amazed how intelligent they are.It actually broke my heart cause it's the first time that I felt like I lacked something. I try my best to study to the point that I didn't have any responsibilities in home, I am well cared by my parents. They let me do what I want, give what I need and want. But no matter how hard I study, I am not satisfied. I just think that my grades doesn't justify how tiring and suffer it is to do something that you don't completely want, it is suffocating. I always tell that they just have better grades because they participate, they speak while I am not. Although it's true but it's not the case at all. I know someone who is intelligent, she doesn't speak or participate unless she told to. She's intelligent, seems like all luck has on her. She doesn't try hard. And I am actually jealous but I cannot show it because I believe that there's more potential of me that is hiding, and once that I know how to use that, it will be all over to them. But that's not it, they are just delulu. I just learned today that I am not one of the with high honor awardee, I am really disappointed. I am satisfied with my scores in the exams, I do well in quizzes. So why? I just want to forget all of this

Thank you so much for this, Nathan. I really needed it right now 🥺🥺 for the past few days i've been beating myself up and crying over the grades i received. For clarification, I did NOT fail. I just received low, passing grades (in my standard) that I don't think is justifiable. Long story short, I know I deserve some flat 1.00 grades in some of my subjects compared to my classmates that received it. I did not cheat (they did), I always had lots of recitations and my exams and tests were almost always perfect. Don't get me wrong, 1.25 is a high grade but seeing my classmates receive a 1.00 grade with barely even trying in recitations and group works makes me feel horrible 😓 im sorry if it comes off as pride, but i really worked hard for it. i may not have been doing my best, but I know I deserve it as much as they do. I also feel stupid thinking that a lot of my classmates received 1.00 grades but I didn't receive even one. I don't even hear them recite as much and it's such a bummer that half of our grades are just roulettes when I really want a real grade, not an eenie-meenie-miney-moo one. idk if what i said was understandable 😟 it's been really frustrating for me and i dont know how to let it all out with just one comment. i'm too ashamed to show it to any of my friends or family even if I made the president's lister. I feel like a fraud. Heck, I even feel extremely stupid and a loser. All negative emotions aside, thank you Nathan for your final thoughts that somewhat lessened my stress and anxieties. 😊

I wasn't able to build any study habits and my grades deteriorated. It is very hard especially if you don't want to disappoint your family. But at the end of the day, we shouldn't really be hard on ourselves, as long as we do our best and enjoy the journey, I am sure we will bounce back from our failures if we continue believing in ourselves and start creating good study habits.
