What TO do and what NOT to do if your dog runs away and doesn't listen 

I have a 3 year Akita and she runs away when she's out the front door and ignores my commands. Treats or shock collar does not work! What should I do?

@@AD-eq4kn The thing about treats and shock collars ... they function the same way... you have to condition them first before using them for training.... If your dog is running after a rabbit and you try to give him a piece of kibble, or if you were to hurt him... he will most likely not notice because hes chasing the rabbit. You have to condition the food to be reinforcing to the dog and conversely someone who trains with a shock collar would do the same with the collar. The food and the pain dont "make" the behavior "happen". I would suggest to use positive reinforcement because that is how I train. Reinforcement mirrors punishment in how it is conditioned and how it functions. I choose to use reinforcement because it is fun for the dog and doesnt have the side effects that pain and startle cause. The key though, is breaking the training up into steps- where you are conditioning the dog to want to come back to you, with easy things first before getting to the hard things (when the dog is over aroused). I suggest playing recall proofing games inside your house and then in your yard, like in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iIR3MtTSyIw.html Then when outside dont have the dog off leash until you have a 100% reliable recall.

I've got a 8 month old Chinese Crested Hairless dog his name is Xiao-ping. He has blue eyes and a bad overbite. He's so cute, but he doesn't want to "sit pretty". I've tried everything but it doesn't work and he will run away from me. What should I do?

Awe. I am so sorry. :( When I was a kid I had a beagle and she ran away from me many times... She was amazing off leash.... until... she saw a rabbit and then she'd disappear over the next hill through thick canyon... Id end up all scratched up from having to crawl through dry brush to find her. So it did happen to me

This exact thing just happened to me. I was thankfully able to recover my dog at this grass area he likes to do his business on but I was scared I was going to lose him forever. I will always be super attentive when I open my front door now.

My dog will run towards the street if I let him go off leash in the front! We have a HUGE area in the back! He's got a "girlfriend/furfriend" he HAS to go visit!! I've got video of him doing that. It's down a back lane, through a hedge! I can't say I "let" him go but he does come back!!! He doesn't stay long. He is very close to me and doesn't go where he can't see me except when he goes to visit that neighbor. If I turn my back & say, "Bye!!" He will run behind me!!

​@@t.j.7789 Yes I'm thinking of letting my dog go, as she loves running to pigeons to play. But she is a big Bull Terrier so I freak as people might not like her jumping on them, as she loves people. I feel she will come back as she loves me, and loves the Toy poodle I have too. I've got not not free out I suppose.

Today my little pincher ran away by a buisy road, bro Im glad i caught her I was SOOOO scared I can not describe it.

Its 12 am, I live in the hood and my puppy just ran away. There are really aggressive dogs off leashes in my town 24/7. Im just going to sit outside, roll up a good one and wait. Ill be calm when she gets back though. Man I hear so much barking its madness, not even people walk at night unarmed because of the ruthless dogs lol People are nothing xD

Lol for my mom, it's the opposite. The most terrifying thing for her is a dog running towards her.

my puppy ran away today , into the neighbors horse pen under an electric fence and was biting their feet, they were getting angry and i didn’t want her to get kicked or stepped on. And the neighbors like to shoot if animals are in their yard . i was so scared and she wasn’t coming for 20 minutes. she could have gotten seriously hurt so when i finally caught her (i brought my other dog and pretended to play with her) she came but she didn’t come at first she ran around me in circles. i brought the other dog inside and my puppy followed i got so mad and i smacked her butt and i felt so bad bc i let the anger out when i shouldn’t of

Dogs basically lose their brains between 6 - 10 months or so.....lol

My dog is 4 month old

First dog i had as a kid did this. Dad beat the dog bad! I was really sad, but the dog never needed to wear a leash again. Always stayed in the yard and walked beside us on walks.

My puppy was fine walking off the lease between 4 and 6 months. Then his normal call of treat offers or clapping on my thighs, which worked fine previous months in our garden and out in the park just did not work. I had to ask a passer by dog owner to pick mine up whilst my puppy tried to jump at him. She likes to jump on people, in case they will give her treats. I just do not trust my puppy to respond to any trained recalls, so just allow her to run around using 50 ft lead. She comes back on recall, unless there is another dog around where she wishes to run to. When loose she was not interested in dogs, as she wheezed past all of them in very fast zoomies around them. I have learnt my lesson. Now she is almost 8 months and not thinking of giving any opportunity to not come back to me. It has been 2 frightening experiences for me. My husband never allowed her off the lease. He does not feel she responds to recalls. Until we are sure sge is good on recall, we will use 50ft lead, which gives her plenty of exercise. We also have 30ft tunnel, which she loves zooming around it in the house and also around our secure garden. Being a small breed she is only allowed 30 minutes a day walk. She loves doing more or gets bored easily. I have trained to do a lot of tricks. Thanks to Kikop, whose videos have been amazing!

I know what you feel. We adopted a Patterdale Terrier 10 days ago. I trained her and after 10 days she has a really good recall outdoors.

Oh no I am so sorry. I suggest because its happened to have some sort of system in place to prevent it happening by mistake. One thing is having an exercise pen around the front door that you go through, then go through the door.

The same happened to my dog and he passed on February 7, 2020 and now I have another dog and she runs away too

As dog owners we have to understand that some people are afraid of dogs! Some people have had traumatic experiences with dogs, and it is unfair to expect everyone to love our dogs and see them the way we do. If a snake owner’s pet got loose, I would be afraid.

So true, we humans get so upset when we are going to lose something and think that screaming and acting up will somehow get the message of our concern into their head, I see the same behavior with kids and their parents when the kids do something undesirable. It is hard, I have a very active dog and she can be very hyper, pushy, and not listen but over a long time we have taught her a lot, they have to work through so much to understand us and our world but we must realize they do want to have our world and be with us. I love Emily's info it really teaches a lot. I noticed when I am tired or not well is when I say and do things that confuse my dogs and kids, so that time I try to not react and try to breath and think first really hard, most times it works but sometimes we humans just lose it and make no sense. Just take a time out, breath, pray and start again, I always try to remember to forgive myself and others to move forward. My dog is a service dog so we have train her to be bomb proof and that is tough because some things she has to respond to, like the word NO. She has to realize she will have to be around others not just me and even though I use the positive approach because I see and know that works, I also teach no-no or uh-uh, or tsk-tsk sounds, so she alerts and tries to see what goes on. She is almost always with me but if she is with others she has to know that others may behave in the less desirable way and how she can work through it. She is a shepherd/collie cross so she is bred to react and push and steer, so I have to take that drive and teach her where to put it, so you can imagine she and I can bump heads a lot quite literally and so I learned to train in lots of small amounts and wow it does pay off. It is hard but so worth it, everyone stays safe then, and that is the goal, just a peaceful and as positive as we can get. I know losing my pup would be heartbreaking. Why have a shy fearful little dog now and she can be a challenge but we have all tried to not get aroused by her antics as it is out of fear and training her has taught her where home is and how we love her. Kinda hard to keep your emotions in check when your dog runs into a busy road where a lot of cars go through the only thing that stops these cars from going is a stop light . The dog could very easily get hit by a car so you can see why a person especially one that loves his dog would get angry or upset

Melody Beall I have a 13yr old beagle who is the same.. The more we call him to come to us, the more he runs.. I offer his favourite treats but he ignores, I never let him off lead at the off leach beach , after I tried it last year thinking now he’ll be ok, bad decision , other walkers caught him for me at car park, I do not punish him at all, but he loves to escape at every opportunity. I had tradesmen at home recently and they left one of the gates slightly open, It’s very frustrating as he is fantastic except for this.

Jac Woolley Some breeds have natural wanderlust potential as a breed trait. The beagle is one of them which makes sense if you think about it.. They were made to hunt and track off leash. Nothing you can do about it but manage it, unfortunately, but you should know you aren’t doing anything wrong otherwise..

Maybe it will be a little comforting to know it’s a common trait for many breeds (even if they are a mix) and you certainly aren’t alone! To both of you: Because your dogs know they can get out, run, and avoid listening, you need to be proactive as much as reactive. How are their obedience skills? You can play impulse control games to build up inhibition which can then be used in general. But you can’t just do this in the home or they will not listen in the highly distracting and exciting outside world. Practice everywhere. Form a solid recall. Try invisible fencing if you must, install a better or double doors if you must. I think anything is worth it to avoid the dangers they could face.

Don't wait for him to run. Keep a leash next to the door and always leash him before opening it. Additionally, it would be pretty helpful if you taught him an alternative behavior, such as going to his crate before you open the door, or just a down stay (though proofing that is actually more difficult in my opinion, than just sending the dog to the crate).

Awe :) Thanks! Yes, the dogs that are supposedly "stubborn" and "hard to train" like huskies and beagles... in actual fact, they just are just too smart... and know what they want. When you teach the dogs to WANT to do what you want them to do... you suddenly have the most well trained dog in the universe :) When there is conflict... usually a husky can outsmart a human lol.

Everyone has their triggers that make them annoyed. When dogs run away its scary and stressful. Actually I didn't mention this in this video, but I train my dogs also when I run at them full speed it means nothing. You can train this while working on a stay, you run away and then run strait at them and then give a treat. Because sometimes when dogs have never seen you run fast at them before and they are loose they can get weirded out. Another thing I do is when I get annoyed at stuff I just go and toss treats to my dogs. I get frustrated with my computer sometimes especially when it crashes and deletes my work, and when I do that I go and feed all my dogs a treat so now when I get annoyed they all look expectant of a treat.

Free Deer my dog (lab) is the same, if i walk the other way or if for some reason he can’t see me, he will come looking for me. Sometimes when he runs off at the beach I hide to see what he does and he gets a little panicky when he can’t see me, then I jump out and he runs to me.

For my own dogs, I use boiled chicken and other types of real meat, as well as their kibble and tiny bits of cheese and turkey hot dog. I must admit I use the hot dog mostly in my videos because its fast and easy to deliver while Im slightly distracted. The key is trying to keep the treats healthy.

Us having a neo-cortex doesn't mean we don't have a mammal brain and a lizard brain under that, the brain has a layered structure with new things on top of old things. Safest thing is to have the dog on a harness and dragging long line. And the perk of having a little dog is that if they did take off on the long line and you had the end of it , you wont be swept off your feet and break your hip. There are lots of little dog perks :)

@@kikopup I have dogs that are mixed with hunting and heading breeds and live in the sticks. I sometimes take them off leash and they go far. I sometimes get frustrated because they will not return but they always do with me whistling. I might buy a whistle. Any tips I do want to have them run the land and even hunt the surrounding area. My dog did that too. one of the people in my community has a bug zapper lantern outside on their back porch and whenever they turn it on she freaks and runs home. Or if she hears a gunshot or a loud noise.

Michelle Shannie that’s exactly what my dog does! As soon as he sees a rabbit or squirrel, he’s locked on and won’t pay attention to anything else. but every time after he loses the animal, he comes back. Something else that’s a good idea is a light up collar. I have one that you can make blink a green light, so when he runs we can always see the light since he blends in well. This also works in daylight! :)
