This is a bunch of Roku malarkey. It sometimes work and sometimes doesn’t work, which means there isn’t anything wrong with my TV or my HDMI cable. With all this hassle, Roku is just not worth it, there a plenty of alternatives and if Roku doesn’t provide a fixe with their defective equipment, no one is going to stand for it and Roku’s business case goes down the toilet. Roku, you’ve been warned!

@karlrovey
@karlrovey 8 месяцев назад
It's not Roku's fault. It's a licensing thing that all devices utilizing HDMI are supposed to follow. I learned about it during a college course that dealt with multi-media in that field. Since we could possibly be in situations where new installations for audio-visual systems would occur, we had a class period where the different connection setups were discussed. When we got to HDMI, the instructor essentially said, "Don't use HDMI, here's why..." It boiled down to it being okay for home settings where you're using short cables. In the context we were talking about, we would need long cable runs. That's problematic enough with HDMI due to HDCP. When you start adding components, it gets worse. If a single component isn't HDCP compliant or there's a bad connection anywhere in the system, it bricks the whole system until the issue is resolved. In other words, you don't just lose a single projector, speaker, screen, etc. You lose the entire setup until you fix or remove the offending component.

Okay, I did resolve this issue. For some reason, the HDMI cable, which was a beautiful braided silver cable (very fancy looking) was bad. When I disconnected it, it was HOT. I replaced it with another HDMI cable (not as fancy) and it worked! Something caused the perfectly-working HDMI cable to stop working... maybe an electrical surge?

This is so frustrating! My TV does support HDCP and it works sometimes. I follow the steps in the video and it works for maybe a day then i get the error again. ROKU, this video isnt a fix its a work around, when will you resolve the actual issue????
@karlrovey
@karlrovey 8 месяцев назад
The actual issue is failing hardware, either in the TV, the HDMI cable, or the Roku, with the Roku being the least likely source of the problem. HDCP is ultimately a failed anti-piracy measure (that device manufacturers are stuck using) that just adds a potential source of failure to electronic devices.

I spoke to Roku troubleshooting agent today and they said it’s my TV that’s the problem and not the Roku device. The TV is 5 years old and I follow all the steps and it still won’t work. I’m at a loss. They don’t tell you what to do when their “fix” doesn’t fix the problem.
@karlrovey
@karlrovey 8 месяцев назад
This fix only works if it's an issue with the cable or a loose connection. If it's a recurring issue, one of two things is happening, your cable is failing or an HDMI port (likely on your TV because it will get more physical stress) no longer has a tight fit.

This is BS. It's a software issue. Every time I get this with my Roku 3, I simply go to system settings and restart the Roku. Lo and behold, the content plays as normal. No fiddling with cables, not even touched the device. So it absolutely cannot have anything to do with connection or display hardware if a reset of the Roku itself fixes the problem.

@@elainemillikin8592I just began to get this error today (with a Roku that is nearly 4 years old). HDCP is the problem. If the devices are HDCP compatible, something is preventing authentication within the 7 ms time limit. I have four ROKU devices stick/ultra/express connected to less than two year old TVs. I had HDCP error messages on all devices. Frequency varied but messages occurred multiple times per day. I called ROKU support and followed their resolution process multiple times. Hard restart, unplug cables, check display options, change HDMI cables, change ports on TVs, change TVs. None of this worked. ROKU is hiding the real source - their software. Never resolved any issues. ROKU refuses to acknowledge that they are the root cause for HDCP error messages. They continue to blame TV's and HDMI cables. Endless loop talking to ROKU support so I gave up and bought four HDMI splitters on Amazon for my four TVs. Since installing the HDMI splitters ($14) I have not seen a single HDCP error message. To further test this I removed a splitter connected to an ULTRA and almost immediately got HDCP errors. Before installing ROKU devices I have never seen any HDCP error messages on any devices. ROKU needs to acknowledge that this is their software revision that created the HDCP problem.
@karlrovey
@karlrovey 8 месяцев назад
It's not a software issue. It's a bad connection somewhere. If the splitter solved your issues, it's the connection between the TV and the HDMI cable. Fun fact, using a splitter to bypass HDCP is technically piracy.

@archangelum

Roku, why does this Roku device malfunctioning make us go through this many steps EVERY time the power goes out. All these cables are so hard to reach. This disconnect and reconnect only works after multiple attempts sometimes 6 or 7 tries. Our family is starting to regret BIG TIME, ever buying this stupidly, so inconveniently designed Roku. The only way we can fix it is to switch it to a different HDMI port on the TV so we have to move from HDMI 1 to HDMI 2 or from HDMI to HDMI 3 or back from HDMI 3 to HDMI 1. It's a freaking nightmare.
@karlrovey
@karlrovey 8 месяцев назад
If moving HDMI ports temporarily resolves the issue, the issue isn't the Roku. HDCP is an anti-piracy measure and has been known to be problematic a while. It's known to have issues establishing connections (and gets worse the longer the cable is). There was even a researcher who said that the end result was just creating one more way to cause device errors.

Do you have audio devices connected to the TV through HDMI (or a few less common digital connections)? If so, that might be your issue. Also, it sounds like you're using a smart TV, which might have internal HDCP connections. HDCP is problematic, but we're also stuck with it.

The problem is HDCP. It has multiple failure points and since the master key was cracked years ago, it serves no purpose whatsoever except to force hardware upgrades. If any part of the HDCP system starts to go, whether in the TV, the cable(s), the ports, sound systems connected via HDMI, or the source device, you will get this error with increasing frequency.
