HDCP or 'High Bandwidth Digital Contect Protection' is a signal standard designed to protect HD content from piracy and copying.

HowToAV.tv takes a look at how HDCP works - and how it can cause compliancy problems, errors and a lack of picture displaying on your AV system.
HDCP works by the Transmitting device (or Source) sending a HDCP data signal to check that the Receiver (or Display) is also HDCP compliant.
If either devices on the system are not compliant, then a HDCP error is likely to occur.

This is such a frustrating technology to tease custommers. I bought a movie on iTunes and it won't play even when everything is Apple hardware. Even when you completely in their ecosystem it isn't a garantee that it will work. Result: you pay money and get nothing in return. Meanwhile the real copyright pirates find solutions for it so is this HDCP really necesary?

Hi great video explaining how it works. I have an infrequent HDCP error issue with using a digital sender from my main Sky+ HD & TV in the Living Room to a 2nd TV in the kitchen with the digital receiver connected to it. 99% of the time, there is no problem and the sender works fine and I can watch Sky on the TV in the Kitchen. Then occasionally, the picture will vanish and be replaced with a Sky message "Display is not HDCP compliant". This appears on both the TV's. The only way I have been able to work around it is to unplug the sender, then plug it back in to effectively "reset" it. Is that the only resolution or is there something more permanent I can do? I have a SHARP 52" Monitor Model PN 525E. It supports 1920 X 1080 resolution but it doesnt have a HDMI input only as DVI D. I got a DVI to Hdmi converter and I was in business but I cant play xbox 360 or Play Station 4 on 1080p resolution. Can only use 720p and I suppose it has something to do with HDCP. How can I disable it from my Xbox 360?

Okay-how come all of a sudden after 3 years with my Roku streaming stick and a Sharp LED Tv, I have lost video. I am having no luck getting an answer out of ROKU. I have a HDMI cord and 3 splitter hooked up to back of tv--DTv working fine. No problem. I wondered if I needed Silverback S6 4k HDMI Cable 6 ft - HDMI 2.0, HDCP 2.2 and 3D support, 4k @ 60hz 4:4:4, Deep Color, by Sewell Direct. None of other cords indicated HDCP settings. Also wonder if splitter needs to have HDCP settings. Thanks for your response.

you just need to make sure your 4K source and 4K display both support HDCP 2.2 and your hdmi cables are HDMI 2.0 , even your AV receiver needs to support HDCP 2.2, However... not everything 4K is hdcp 2.2 , there are cheap 4K units that are not hdcp 2.2 .... always check the specs of the unit you are going to purchase..... or... you can use a 1x2 hdmi splitter to fix the "issue"

Just get a hdcp splitter some remove the hdcp signal just be sure to research which ones remove it :)

I have a Westinghouse model sk-19h210s LCD TV and an Xbox 360 S model. The problem is when I try to play any DVD I get audio, but no visual on the screen. I have an HDMI cable going from the TV to the Xbox. But there's an error message thats pops up and says: "Secure HDCP link not found". I changed out the HDMI cable with another brand new one, supposing thats what was wrong, but it did not resolve the issue. What makes absolutely no sense is that it worked perfectly fine last night, but not at all today. Is it my TV? Do I need to get a newer model TV to be able to play DVD's on my Xbox using an HDMI cable? Please respond as quickly as you can, I need to use this DVD for school, but dont have another device that can play DVD's other than my Xbox. Thanks.

what worked for me: take out the kable and put it back in on both ends. Then refresh the page (amazon prime video)

Is it possible to use a HDMI splitter in order to bypass the HDCP? I know it'sused for the same purpose but then with capture cards.

+megamaximpie Many thanks for your question - unfortunately a professional HDMI splitter cannot be used to bypass the HDCP. As you know, HDCP protection has been embedded by the publishers in order to protect their content and, therefore, professional manufacturers must adhere to the HDCP / HDMI standards. There are a number of non-professional products available on the market which may allow you to bypass the HDCP, but they are certainly not going to be an approved HDMI product.

+megamaximpie Unfortunately using a splitter will not remove the HDCP encryption. As Martin mentioned in the video, HDCP is there to protect content from unlawful duplication. HDMI licensed products are unable to strip away HDCP or convert from HDMI to an analogue connections, again to prevent copying content. There are some unbranded products on the web that can do this, but these are non licensed and aren’t guaranteed to work. Laptops, video cameras and other devices that allow the user to record their own content don’t always add HDCP encryption. Because this is your ‘own’ content, you are able to reproduce and distribute the content how you wish.

+ciegroupltd the thing is that my samsung tv gives me the informstion of its settings. and it tells me.that it's hdcp complient. but at the same time it isn't? that sounds a little odd to me to be honest. and im sure my external devices which are connected to my tv are hdcp complient.

+megamaximpie so using HDCP splitter could make it work? Okay I would try that. My TV got HDCP problem when there was a storm in my area, so there was heavy lighting, maybe that was a reason why my TV get HDCP problem.

Went to watch a Neflix movie from a Roku 3 and got the error message. After Googling a few sources I discovered they could be fix. Either just replace a damaged cable or do what I did which was to unplug then replug the cable and it's working now.

+ljones7788 Thanks for the feedback! Sounds like this was a simple connectivity issue rather than a HDCP compatibility issue - we love the problems that can easily be fixed! To use the 'handshake' analogy again, by reconnecting your source and display - you were effectively reintroducing the two devices to one another. +eakhl I have one Roku 3 and lucky for me it only happened once after having owned it since it came out. Researched a lot of forums and people being told to reset their Roku and found this was the easiest and fastest way. I have it plugged directly into the TV. Best of luck.

I had also a problem with HDCP but I found on the AVS forum a device called DRHDMI from www.hdfury.eu and this solved my problem.. I had an HDCP handshake problem... it worked out of the box..

My Direct TV provider just changed their HDCP code which made the system not compatible to my TV. Their solution was to use component cables which they sent me,,, that sucks, But the big problem is that now my HDMI ports only sees the direct tv box and not my dvd player or ps3... Is there a way to fix this problem..

Hi Gamalier and many thanks for your question. It's simply a case of checking the manufacturer's specification (either within the user manual or online). If your TV has HDMI inputs, it should definitely be HDCP compatible (but do check!). However, if you have a 4k / UHD TV it needs to be HDCP 2.2 compatible in order to play UHD content (See our videocast on HDCP 2.2 here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-suw0aJ7IULk.html ). And this definitely would need checking as early generation 4K UHD TVs may not be compatible!

Lame. I used the scan disc thing on vudu.com and paid money to convert my dvd to HDX and now it won't play in anything but SD. I paid $3 extra for no reason!! :(

If you get this on a Roku, just do a System Restart. That should fix the problem.

Well, I gave it a try! Did whole system restart. Resigned in to Gaia TV--still getting HDCP unauthorized. Content disabled. I can hear it but can't see it.

Anyone who gets any kind of HDCP error on an xbox one just go to settings and turn on power saving mode then restart your xbox. You can't have the system on the always on option, it must be on power saving mode. This will get Rid of the very aggravating HDCP error on your xbox.

We have a Sony 4k 3d XBR-65x900A TV with HDCP2.1 port and a Samsung UBD-K8500 4k 3d Player with HCCP2.2 and just want to be able to watch 4k movies on the Sony tv, any way possible, without having to buy a new tv?

Hate HDCP errors, especially with VUDU.com - they sell you an HD movie, then you can not even watch it on a brand new HDCP capable gaming monitor. So if its to prevent copyright or copying movies.. its a waste of technology anyway. All I have to do is watch a bluray on my PC and record it via my video capture software.

That's not true there are many ways to fix this problem. One way is to buy a HDMI splitter in most cases they will kill the signal from being hdcp. And another way is to convert the signal over to SDI and then convert it back to HDMI.
