I just took a lead fishing weight and flattened it with a hammer and slid it between the terminal and connecter and it worked perfectly

Thanks, mate! My mom broke her hip and as a result of not driving her battery drained out. I trickle charged it to full power but just couldn't get it tight on the positive side. Took it to get gas and went totally dead at the gas station. I knew it was the connection and literally just tapped it and power was restored but I sure as hell didn't want to drive it again. Now I hope a shim will do the trick.

Very cool. Never knew those existed and as long as you clean it up it'll be good until you change the battery. Then use another if your cable clamp is worn out

My negative terminal was so small I couldn't tighten it at all. The Shim kits I got were too big to put the clamp over it, couldn't spread it open any more. So I just cut the shim in half and now it's as tight as can be.

Thanks for this video. As a trucker I always disconnect my battery before I leave for about a month. Battery always turns on great but I been tighten too tight that it got loose. Thanks

The terminals always seem to want to lose connection on me at the wrong times. Over the course of my life, I've had to use everything from hanger wire to a folded straw to get home. As long as half of the terminal us making contact with the post you can get home. Of course actual shims are better overall, but you can't buy them everywhere like those oversized terminals and it's a damn shame!!!

Never heard of them. However, I'm fairly certain that the three parts houses in town don't carry them as I've pretty thoroughly scoured their battery accessory shelves. Something else to add to the Amazon list.

cut a tin can up... and wrap a piece of the tin around the terminal as a shim... will work for 10-20 thousand miles

Most of the top post batteries have different sized posts. The negative will be smaller than the positive. The idea is that it helps prevent reverse polarity by preventing the negative cable from fitting the positive side. On most earlier vehicles the sizes are SAE and fit that style terminal, however there are also metric batteries that conform to JIS standards and those are smaller on both terminals but still have the positive as a larger size.

Hi thanks for this. Did you put any gel or anything inside the shim? Saw a video where a guy did. I'm a middle age DIY single lady, this seems doable, but I'm just wondering about any precautions I may need to take? Never done this before. I know this vid was a year or so ago, so just if you have time I have an appointment with a mechanic to buy and place a whole new positive battery terminal,. But if I can di this, I'll likely save a few $100

You don't need to put any kind of gel on it, I myself just used a soda can, and cut it to the right size and wrap it around my battery post and then I spread out my lose terminal and was able to tighten it right back up like it was new. If you read the previous comments some people even said they take the cheaper route and they just use aluminum foil instead of buying a shim. As long as the terminals are snug and tight around the battery stem you'll be fine as long as the batteries life span, and shouldn't have to spend 100's of dollars when you can do it yourself.

One thing GM got right is having side-mount battery connections that screw in. On batteries with top-mounted posts (connections), the batteries usually vents the sulfuric gases through the battery fill caps on top; the gases collect on the top-mounted battery posts, corroding them. Thus, side-mounted battery terminals lack that problem.

These shims are normally sized for a loose fit for the larger positive terminal. They are thin and designed to crunch down regardless which terminal you use.

As you were blabbering I typed in 'amazon battery terminal shims' and Google showed me that I can get them for half-as-much at my local Advance Auto store *today.* :^) In the old days when I had lots of #12 COPPER wire for antennas, I'd use some of that to *shim* my battery-acid hollowed out *bronze* battery terminal. I seem to remember that it only happens on whichever (+ or -) terminal always was corroded. *Great video: **_practical tip._*
