I actually find videos like this very discouraging. We take our dog out constantly, and I do mean constantly. We praise them if they happen to potty out there, but often they go out- sniff sniff, spend a very long time doing nothing but watching random things, and then come inside and find a lovely place on the carpet to poop, and pee. We have tried rewarding with treats, praise, crate training, being as boring as possible outside so they focus on pottying instead of roaming (which we have also done), and nothing works. This is not realistic, or helpful advice unfortunately.

I really feel for you. The advice that we sometimes have to put up as content creators is generalized but unable to help people that sometimes are in unique situations. I’d love to personally help you overcome this problem. Perhaps if we had a conversation I could help you come up with a solution. If that’s not a problem for you, you can text me and I’ll do what I can to help you figure this out. 832-734-5189

I am also struggling with this. You’re saying exactly what’s happening to me and my pup. I’d take him outside and wait for him to go for 20 minutes. Nothing. So we go back in and I see him sniffing around again. So I take him out and for another 15 minutes nothing. So I bring him back in and then he decides to pee on the rug. Looking for help on RU-vid and goggle hasn’t been very useful thus far.

I get that! The thing is, it is okay to communicate “no” to a dog when they are doing something inappropriate. BUT… Most people grossly miss the fact that their dog is just confused about where the best place to go really is. If folks would reward their dogs really well when they go in the right place, then saying “no” would work way better.

Here’s the Advice you all need. This is what TO DO. This is what I emailed a new Adopter of one of my dogs. I’ve used this technique on puppies and older dogs that are recently adopted and are insecure and need boundaries: Yes… He needs more boundaries. Bring the crate into kitchen and he should be crate trained all over again. It’s not a bad thing, he just needs to learn where it’s acceptable there to go to the bathroom. I’m assuming he gets kenneled at night. When let out of the crate in the morning he should be lead immediately outside in the yard… bring treats and go out with him. When he goes potty, immediately tell him “Good Boy” and give him the treat. When back inside, since he’s gone potty, give him 30 - 45 minutes maximum free-time. Bribe him back in the crate with a treat (so he knows it’s not punishment) and let him hang out in there. Anytime he’s let out of the crate he needs to go straight outside. Then again, Potty, Good Boy, Treat, Free-Time, Crate. For most dogs I’ve had to house break, I’ve bought cheap hot dogs or some chicken, cut them up in small pieces, keep them in a zip lock bag and when they potty, they get that special “high-value” treat. They very quickly learn that they ONLY get that yummy high-value treat if they potty outside… and they learn quick. Pavlov’s dog lol. As far as where he’s had an accident inside, start placing his water dish there. And/or you feed him in that spot… I’ve even kept the dish he’s eaten at, in that spot. Because they won’t go theoretically where they eat. I’ve never had a dog lift their leg again where I’ve placed that food dish. Don’t feel it’s unusual that a new dog, even if an Adult or older dog, is having accidents at first… the change can sometimes have this effect. It’s kind of like having new company.. you have to show them where the bathroom is. This is why I always insist on crate training even if they’re older dogs. Because I see this more often than not. Don’t feel bad about crating and limiting his freedom for a bit. Dogs are like children and need boundaries. You just need to reset his boundaries while he’s still decompressing in a new environment

He is crate trained since he is a show dog and house trained but I think the change in ownership and environment just has him a little nervous. I will do the food/water dish suggestion at dinner for the rest of the week. I took him out immediately this morning for a long walk, were he only peed. Since he didn't eat much the night before I figured he simply didn't have to go. We got home and I took a shower and he pooped on the floor. I'll give what you are saying a try and report back!

Can you go into more detail about what we should be doing? Most of this video was about what not to do and without a specific alternative I'm still clueless. How do I control their food? How do I prevent the behavior? Do I just always leave them outside? You say not to put food in the floor should I put it on a box? You mentioned kennels but not how to use them. Everytime I put my dog in a kennel he instantly panics and gets his teeth stuck in the bars. Blood gets everywhere. I have had this dog 10 years and for about 7 of them he never had accidents. After I met my husband he started peeing in the house all the time. My husbands adult dog was never properly house trained and I think this may be why.

@@AltheDogTrainer I agree with a lot of what you're saying, but do believe if you catch your dog in the act, its OK to give him/her a verbal queue "NO" as most dogs learn pretty quickly what this word means. My dog is small enough to where i will pick him/her up and go straight outside. To your point of them learning by going outside 700 times, that is the best place to go. I don't correct for excitement peeing - I agree with you on that, I am hoping he grows out of it :-)
@AltheDogTrainer
@AltheDogTrainer 4 года назад
Willie Wilcoxen thanks for responding. A very small percentage of dog training should be making it clear where the boundary is. I think you should say no to you dog. This way, you are being precise with them about what you don’t want. However, if that is the only tactic that is used, then it seems to me that there is very little chance the dog will actually know what you want. When it comes to excitement peeing, using a crate and closing the door several times until they calm down is a great way to frustrate them into calmness. Once they are calm, time to really reward them for being calm and the peeing then starts to go away. I hope this is helpful and I am glad you responded.

So I have a dog door, I have two small dogs. Every morning I take them straight outside and they do their business etc “outside, go puddles” they are receptive to this command as it’s been used from day one. But then I come home from work? And there is always one or two pee puddles inside, even with the dog door? They have access to the yard. And during the night one of them gets up and pees inside even though I take them both out before bed and do the same ritual. How can I stop them from doing this during the day? I can’t lock them outside because they bark and go crazy and we have had complaints from the local council etc so the dog door has completely stopped that.

My dad trained dogs in the Army, and I have always been good at training myself. Though the only 2 dogs I ever had problems house training were both Maltese dogs. One was 9 when she came to live with us, and she only lived until 12, because she had health issues. I adopted a 3 year old rescue Maltese 3 months ago, and was told he was house trained. My pups have a doggy door to go out to our beautiful fenced in back yard when ever they want, and these 2 Maltese dogs are the only ones that I have had issues training. I taught my new pup how to use the doggy door as soon as he came home with me, and he didn't potty in the house for 3 days. Then he started pottying now and then in the house, and it's getting worse. I don't know what the problem is, because he loves his new home and my other 2 pups. I am trying to use crate training now, hoping that controlling when he goes outside will help. Though I feel awful leaving him in the crate for so long, while my other 2 pups are sleeping in bed with me, or snuggling on the couch. If I let him sit on the couch with us, he will sneak off and potty about 6 ft from the doggy door, instead of going outside. I really don't understand why this new pup is pottying in the house....

We have both owned many dogs in our lives and been successful with potty training many times over. We have a Dutch we got from a rescue as a puppy and she’s nearly 2 and STILL goes inside. She has zero patience once she tells you she has to go. If she’s not outside with you within a minute or two she’s gonna pee right there. The crate does not work for her at all. She pees and poops in it alllllll the time, even if she just did both outside not 30minutes earlier. She also doesn’t ask in the crate. She goes and then complains. We have a 3yr old Malinois that we kept crated the first 1.5-2yrs whenever not eating, exercising, or training, etc. Any time our full attention couldn’t be given to watch him, he was crated and it worked beautifully for him. He is well behaved and knows how to behave in the house and likes to go in his crate on his own. No potty issues. She came to us as a consumer so it was important all eyes were on her at all times she was out. Her foster was allowing her to eat and carrying around items like rocks and we needed to break that habit immediately. She was allowed to walk in and out of the house all the time so potty wasn’t an issue there. She’s killing us with going in her crate multiple times every day. She’s on a schedule for food, drink, potty, play, etc and it’s made no difference. We went to our summer cottage and she only had a few accidents the whole time but we spent most of the time outside with her because she would try to drink the whole lake every time she went to play and would need to pee a good 4-6 times before we could even think of bringing her back in. (It’s an extremely clean small private lake-promise it’s safe water! It’s tested!) We came home and she was immediately back to her old ways. She can hold it for a really long time too, so it’s not that. There’s been random occasions where she’s held it for 8-10hrs no problem! What in the world can we possibly do!?

Hey, I just adopted a 7 month old puppy who isn’t properly potty trained and she is peeing and pooping in the house. She doesn’t let me know when she needs to go and I’m getting a little frustrated because when I take her out in the back yard, she just walks around and then just sits there (I can stay there with her for 30 mins, and nothing) and then we go back home and she runs and pees on the floor. I trained my tiny JackChi, but I had him since he was 9 weeks old and I feel like he was more clued up than she is. I was training my sister’s dog when she was a puppy and I feel like girls are harder to potty train than boys. I feel like she doesn’t like my yard, maybe she used to pee on grass or dirt, and my yard is paved. There’s one spot when she goes 50% of the time, which doesn’t have the pavement but rather dirt. But she doesn’t go there all the time, she still pees in the house and doesn’t let me know when she needs to go. I trained my JackChi to use a floor bell and he lets me know every time he needs to go, but her - I’m just losing my patience. (Also, what didn’t you mean by not leaving the food or water on the floor?? Where am I supposed to leave it? What did you mean by that?) She isn’t crated, I never crated my dogs. Any suggestions? Also, I’m in the U.K., so I can’t text you.

Perhaps you could use potty pads as the target. I’d place them outside. Then, each and every time you give your dog food and water, place them in a crate about the size of their body. When you let them out, take them to the potty pad and reward if they go. If they don’t go, place them back in the crate and wait for them to whine telling you that it’s time to go. DO NOT LET THEM HAVE ANY ACCIDENTS FOR A WEEK. Thats the hardest part because you would have to be very diligent. Good luck

First I give them access to food and water. Then I crate them in the same room that I am in. During that time I listen, and see if I can learn what sound they will make when they are ready. If I hear something that I believe is then being ready to go, I take them out and give them several minutes. If they do go, I try my best to learn the sound cue they made and repeat that. Good luck!

Came here, like many have after about 9 months (for me) trying to find reasonable solutions to this issue. Google, YT, IG friends who are pet owners and the like. Everyone talks puppy advice and what not to do. A waste of 4 minutes on YT again. Healthy 2 1/2 year American Mix Pit. Busy schedule, but make sure I walk her 2-3 times a day... about 2 hours total. Play with her in and out the house. We have established a regular spot for her to go outside. Wee pads work occasionally when I'm not home. I can't let her roam free when I'm not home, as she IS certain to poop on the floor which is why I have a designated space for her. Time the food to outside walk, play and bathroom routine/ratio. Toys and music for her when I'm not around for stimulation. I'm exhausted now, and a very patient and persistent first time dog owner. Never scolded her but always reinforce when a she goes in the outside designated area. This video just made me EXTRA frustrated. The only thing positive about this video is, at least he didn't just assume we all have puppies. 90% of these videos assume we all have puppies. I'm 99% certain, had I had her as a pup, I'd wouldn't have this issue. She's soon to be 3, and it's getting way out of hand.

I have a shop with with an air conditioned office. My dog will not poop or pee in the office when he is contained in the office. When the dog is in the shop space with doors open to the outside he will pee and poop in the shop on occasion. I have never caught him in the act, but when I notice the mess he looks sorry as if he knows what he did. I love the dog and community likes the dog, he has a nice personality. I only scold the dog when he poops and pees in the shop space, other than that, the dog is an angel. If he has the option to go outside why does he choose to mess up my shop? When the shop is closed I purposely lock him in the office to avoid cleaning his mess. I am very conchous of giving my dog access to outside. The dog has never pooped or peed in the office. I am confused, I need help.

Here you go. This should help. How do I potty train my dog? Potty training your dog is one of the first things you want to teach your dog. Because who wants to step in and smell poo and pee in their home. It might seem overwhelming, so I am going to lay out a plan that will get your dog headed in the right direction. First, get specific about where you want your dog to go. When you know precisely where that is, you will take your dog to that exact spot for the next few weeks. Don’t complicate it by having more than one spot. Two, don’t give free access to food and water. Yes, your dog does need to have this several times each day, but, if it is out all the time, then it’s going to be very difficult for you to know when it’s time for your dog to go. Third, after you give your dog food and water, I want you to crate them. The crate should be about the size of their body and not much bigger. I want you to crate your dog for 20 to 40 minutes. The time really varies from dog to dog. So, when your dog is in the crate, you will need to listen to them well. At some point, you will hear a vocalization from them that means it is time to go. Now, take them to the potty area. I suggest saying “Go Potty” as you are walking them out. When you get to the potty area, give them some time. I suggest 3 to 5 minutes. If during that time they use the restroom, liberally reward them to make it clear that this is among the best things to do. If they don’t go potty, place them in the crate again but for a much shorter amount of time. Again, listen to them well, so that way you can learn when they are ready to go. This is the basic plan I use to teach potty training. If you need something more than this, be sure to send me a message.

@AltheDogTrainer

Aurora Grace that’s a really good question. You’re not simply taking it away all together, your going to get the timing perfect to eliminate the mistakes. If you give the dog water, crate them, and then take them out to pee. If you get that chain of events and then reinforce, everyone wins. However, if you leave the water out all the time and your dog pees, then everyone loses, especially your dog.

Then taking her outside and then praising her for going outside. This worked with my last dog. And the two before that. It’s videos like this where all the trainer does is basically say “hey it’s your fault you don’t take your dog out enough” that urks me. And saying “in the special case” to address 90% of the people coming to this video looking for real advice on how to deal with a behavioral problem with going in the house is not helpful. There are a lot of dogs who know where they are supposed to go is outside, however choose not to for a any number of reasons; laziness, they don’t like the weather conditions outside, willful defiance, or in interesting circumstances pettiness. These are living creatures with personalities as complex as humans. And using the training belief that it’s always just human at fault is leaving a lot of dogs behind who actually are having a behavioral problem making them mess in the house, and creating an extremely unhealthy relationship between owners and dogs cause the owner believes they’re doing something wrong and they don’t have the avenues to correct the behavior.

When I think about these kinds of problems I try to place myself in the dog's shoes. The question that you will have to make clear to your dog is why it is significantly better to go outside where you want it to. when you answer this question from your dog's point of view and then create a ritual around that, then the likelihood of your dog going where you want it to will increase. What is something that you could do that would make it beyond obvious to your dog that outside is clearly the best?

Oh my. Yes we often make mistakes of thinking dogs think like us and have the same animal behaviors. Hitting/hurting them does not fix a problem it just makes them scared of you & potentially others. Please try to put yourself in your dogs shoes when you are upset & how you, as an innocent creature would want and deserves to be treated. Use positive reinforcement to praise them when they do it correctly , and learn the different reasons dogs may do this and try informed methods with CONSISTENCY. Anything done with dogs should be consistent to be effective. I hope things are better and that you have found a different better way to handle this than hitting.

Hippie mentality kills me. They assume that if the owner is doing something wrong if the dog is doing something wrong, as if the dog doesn't have a will of its own. The question isn't "If I don't walk my dog regularly or on any schedule, and just let them eat and drink whenever they want, how do I stop it from peeing and pooping in the house?". Some dogs simply do as they please, and need to be corrected. True, correction doesn't create good habits or teach what correct actions are, but that's not the purpose of correction. The purpose of correction is to BREAK bad habits, and teach what incorrect actions are. Also, how can correction be wrong if this is how dogs teach each other?

Also there are indoor options that could be bought for small dogs such as little grassy areas. The 12-year-old dog may just be having issues because he's getting older. Give him a break. Hopefully someone will give you a break when you're peeing all over when you're older.

He does do the occasional excitement pee, which is fine and we're trying to figure that one out, but otherwise is excellent. Except when we take him outside, he pees and then just wanders for 8-10 minutes. Then, on occasion, will go inside and very calmly poop. He knows exactly when to go outside, just sometimes doesn't. We don't have any other pets, so I presume there isn't any marking issues. I think I covered all of your points.

I take her out to potty on a leash and praise her when she potty’s outside and give her a treat. But sometimes as soon as we come in she will pee or poop in the house. I have noticed that she will “dig” in a couch cushion occasionally and pee, literally after I saw her pee outside. I did tell her no and tried to correct her, put her on a leash and went back outside. She did not pee, even though she was given the opportunity again, once we came inside, i did put her in her crate and said “bed” I will try putting down the food at a specific time and not leave it out to free feed. But should I pick up the water as well? I’m getting tired of washing the couch cushions, but my patience is still there. Windows and doors replaced. No longer had doggie door in sliding door, now it's around the corner in the hallway as a pass through, they all know where it is and how to use it very well. This has continued a month after the house sitter is gone. He has been taken to the vet and screened , he is physically perfectly fine.. We're using kennel again. leash training. Anytime he is not physically watched he takes that opportunity to mark / urinate. (Generally at the foot of a chair or a table ) We've gone through the house with a black light cleaning any spots we could find thoroughly. We've used products such as p-wiz/nature's miracle/awesome Orange & Bissell pet odor carpet cleaner. Using a carpet wet vac. *Is very close to end up being an outside dog but my weather does not permit this in summer with a husky seeing as I'm in the middle of the Sonoran desert w high temperature. This problem was so bad and I mean unreal kindda bad, So he come home one day and put the dog out in the kennel and then dropped his pants and took a hot creamy poop right into the dogs kennel, after bringing the dog there for the usual time it spends, tha dog clearly as frustrated as the owner, I kid you not, this dog never ever 💩 in the house again . This isn't advice I would give anyone but I do know I seen this happen back in 1998.

I agree with @nicoleflowers7. My shepherd is almost 3. We’ve recently moved. He never pooped or peed inside until we moved into our new apartment. We take him out constantly. My boxer. Bam put him on the leash he goes out side poops, pees and he’s done want to go inside. 2 min. Process. My shepherd will not do it. Not consistently. I walk him to go potty for minimum 30mins before work, 30 on lunch from my work, nada, I get home and there’s poop and pee. Just last night both I and my fiancé took him out for a 30 min walk each, nada. We come inside and leave to go get dinner, nada. We turn our head for 30 seconds and what do you know. Fresh poop. In the same spot. As soon as I even point it out he knows. By his posture he knows. He’s been house broken for years. I’m not sure how to correct this behavior

Has there been a previous dog in the place you moved to? That might be an answer. Domination

I would imagine so as it’s a pet friendly place. However it does have new carpet. I believe it might’ve been a schedule issue. He’s very very very sensitive competitively. He poops outside at about 9:00pm close to the same spot and he circles about 6 or 7 times before he finally squats.

Kind of a nonchalant presentation with less information than expected. He's right: disciplining in the moment doesn't have the desired effect in the long run. And this video doesn't much address multiple dogs in the home, and is mostly "Don'ts" instead of "Dos". The hoarding attitude is maybe why he's not effective. Some fosters out there have to take on more than one.
