This film is an entertaining treasure trove of down & dirty inside info on how U.S. tanks and other tracked vehicles were kept rolling & overcame a multitude of obstacles in the field during World War 2. '"Field Expedients" were "Anything you can think of to keep your vehicle rolling." In other words, this film is a show case of good 'ol American know how solving problems in novel and innovative ways. Often times in World War 2, just getting to where you needed to go in your tank was half the battle. You'll learn how M4 Shermans & M5 Stuarts navigated a wide variety of obstacles, including deep mud, anti tank ditches, sand & boulders. How to repair common mechanical problems with simple tools or whatever is available around you. You'd be surprised what you can do with fence posts & chicken wire! You'll watch a Sherman back under a bridge & support in with its rear deck so the rest of its platoon can cross it, adding grousers to tracks to climb steep hills, repairing thrown tracks in all kinds of conditions, building corduroy roads, what to do on a multi engined tank when one conks out (many tanks had several) and much more. A feast for gear heads & off roaders alike!

My 90-year old friend who was a world war II b-24 pilot sent me a CD on how to start up a b24. It takes two people. I trained in tanks at fort Knox in '59. I learned they were very dangerous ---- to their occupants. A college friend was stationed across the fort at the Armor Board where they tested various weapons against tanks. There are lots of ways to kill them.

Never been in a tank in my life, but I knew some tankers, early 70s. I used to like reading their manuals. “This is your 105 mm Gun Full Tracked Combat Tank M60 (or something like that). Proper care and servicing will provide you with many hours of trouble free operation.” I always wondered if the tankers could do a test ride before driving it off the lot. Btw, if you want a … unique job, try being an MP directing tank traffic. I used to say, please, a lot under my breath, please go where you're told.

My Dad's best friend was a tank driver in the 3rd Army in WWII. He always told the story of being in France and getting stuck. He said he started hearing someone cussing at him to get tank unstuck and moving and he answered back with a few choice words before he looked up to his hatch and there stood Patton. Patton gave the tank commander and Chic five minutes to move the tank or they be shoveling shit the rest of their service career. Chic said they got it moved rapidly after that encounter.

Not the drivers fault, but the commanders. The commander is both the tanks brain, and it's eyes. He tells the driver what to do. Beyond giving the driver directions, it's the commanders job to choose the best path for the tank. The commander can see far more than the driver.

@Kojak0
@Kojak0 5 лет назад
@Nitsu It wasn't that common that American tanks carried logs (some did, but Fury was a movie) since the US troops had maintenance units always close by. It was way more common for especially russian tanks to carry logs with them, for this specific reason. If several logs were carried by a tank, is was less for getting out of mud and other holes, and more of a poor man's reactive armor.
