Being from Rotterdam, watching this video and hearing your wonderful words actually filled me with pride. I am glad you enjoyed my hometown so much. Thank you for your kind words.
I wish I was from LONDON! 8million people ! the whole world knows london ! half of holland fits in 1 London ! REAL BIG CITY REAL WORLDCITY ! rotterdam is an homeless-wellfare institution shit city dude.
I love Rotterdam alot! Most interesting city in The Netherlands because it is so innovative in urbanism. You do not see that as much in Europe, Rotterdam is unique in that matter. I like the fact that it is easy to get around, not infested with mass tourism, overall safe and clean. And people are very friendly and helpful, they do not see you as as burden. Rotterdam shows that modernism is not always ugly, and does it beautifully. Rotterdam rules!
...unique? Whats unique in Rotterdam? Cube houses are from Helmond. The big markethall, isnt the biggest of the Netherlands. Erasmusbridge?...are many in the world
@@You-mr3lo @@You-mr3lo It is all the above and more that makes Rotterdam unique. There is no market hall in the World with houses on the arch. The Erasmus brigde was opened in 1996, many cities copied that from Rotterdam. The cubes house were first built in Helmond and created in a more impressive way with a different facade in Rotterdam. Sorry maybe Rotterdam's version was more impressive quirky. There is no city like Rotterdam in The Netherlands or the World for that matter. You either like it or hate it. I love it! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BmUNt1VMuFY.html
I'm so happy to see the love that Rotterdam is getting these days! I'm frankly addicted to this city and love that this is a hidden gem in Europe! I'm glad its next to Amsterdam as well because you'll never find Rotterdam overcrowded and you can enjoy it just as much as the locals! Great video and I can't wait to go back!!!
Thanks! Yes, Rotterdam is definitely less crowded than Amsterdam and has a totally different vibe. It's such a lovely city and I felt inspired being there. Glad you liked the video :)
Wow the City of Rotterdam deserves huge thanks and admiration for how they have developed their city into such an amazing place. Thank you for the tour. Love it all but especially those floating trees!! What an original idea.
Happy you enjoyed the city tour! Rotterdam must have an awesome city planning department. There was a particular politician in the 1970s who called for architecture 'with some life in it.' They succeeded! The Floating Forest was one of my favourites as well and I hope to see the concept repeated more widely :)
@@nancyjohnson9247 The builders had 85 years to develop something nice? Now it looks like Eurodiney. Al those strange buildings. That is certainly not how to make a good city.
Wow, I never knew how cool Rotterdam was but now I know, thanks to your awesome video! Thank you for bringing it into our lives! Like the others commented, I was very impressed with the Market Hall - I definitely need to get there someday. I love the sign that said "Take a picture of the skyline today - tomorrow it will change." Lots to see there...can't wait!
Yes! That sign totally sums up the city and locals joke about that too. The Market Hall is really something special. I love how it's both functional and beautiful - urban design home run! More videos coming from the Netherlands :)
Rotterdam hasn’t been top of mind, I’ll admit…But ….WOW! Bombed to smithereens during WW2…Now it’s “Manhattan on the Meuse”! The city just oozes architectural freedom and new thinking. And how about that market! Another eye opener for me! Thanks for a really great video tour!
'Freedom and new thinking' is a great way of putting the vibe of this city. A place for architects, artists, and other creative types to just PLAY! The market is even more mind-blowing in person and I love how they used the space in different ways. Happy you enjoyed the tour around the city :)
As a Rotterdam-Neighbor. (Schiedam, which is older, and famous for its largest windmills in the world, and Kethel 1 Jenever) I just visit the market-hall, this past weekend, for the first time. I was quit impressed. Beautiful building, one must say! But it is for the tourists. It's expensive, so very view locals will buy their daily grocery's there. And i keep wondering about the smell. and noise that must reach the apartments, 24/7. And even, when i told on FB, to my friends we where going there, i got responses like, look out for the rats... O.o Didn't see one, luckily. But who would want to live there!?
Fun fact: the original Cube houses stand in another Dutch city called Helmond and were build in 1974, they were designed by the same architect and were the main inspiration source for the ones build in Rotterdam!
Eileen Aldis enjoyed the video, I had a relative who worked in the Hague for a while he didn't like Rotterdam saying it was rough! I went to Rotterdam loved it and it's allot better than many cities in the UK.
Though we love our architecture in our beloved Rotterdam, the vast majority of our citizens will tell you that their favorite spots in the city are: the public parks and gardens. And there is nothing else that will make us sigh with relief and love when we're driving down the Maasboulevard or the Van Brienenoordbrug, and we see our skyline (especially at night). That's when we know that we're home again.
So nice to see you in my country. Rotterdam is great to visit. I Love the markthal Love the painting on the roof. Its great gor us Dutch people to visit too
Hi, great video. I will definitely check out the floating forest. I'm going soon (my third time there, I love it!). My favourite places are Nhow Bar and Kitchen, which gives you stunning views looking down on Erasmusbrug and the city. Also Witte de Withstraat, which is this really cool street lined with boutique shops, hotels, bars and cafes. Just a really cool vibe!
Amazing stuff, Eileen! I'm considering moving to this city for pursuing my master's. Your video just increased my desire to move to this wonderful city. Keep on uploading more travel videos to your channel!
The best from Rotterdam is the down to earth mentality from the people from Rotjeknor, as the Rotterdam people say. The love for Rotterdam is totally genuin and without any doubt. Feyenoord is the most fanatic loved footballclub in the Netherlands.
subscribe mine too, im a newbie in youtube , go continue to another places the way you talk about that the location so easy to understand..love it! sukses Eileen!
Visited Rotterdam last November on a day trip from Amsterdam. I was intrigued by its architecture from seeing RU-vid videos. Definitely have to get back as I only spent about 4 hours here.
We were just there 3 weeks ago...absolutely loved it! made so many great friends there. it was definitely not what i had expected having already been to amsterdam before! cheers ~sara
Hey Sara! Cool! Yeah, we loved it as well. Glad you had a good time! I visited Rotterdam first which I think is a bit odd because most people probably see Amsterdam first. It's so futuristic and I love their attitude about how quickly the skyline changes. :)
Now that you say that I can also see a harp! I like how it's like cloud-gazing where everyone sees something slightly different. The Market Hall is super cool and different - one of my favourite buildings we saw there.
I agree Eileen, Its funny I saw the harp from the beginning, but I find if someone suggests that it looks like something then most people will see the suggestion. I guess some of us are different. Yes that market hall was beautiful! Now get somewhere warm before winter sets in ! Keep up the great videos!
Thanks Chris! I'm starting to dream of somewhere warm as well - as is our birthright as Canadians! :) You're right about suggestion. I always prefer experiencing things before hearing other people's reviews and thoughts. Then afterwards it's fun to compare notes, ie. harp vs dog haha
If you’re visiting Rotterdam, the Maritiem Museum is also a cool place with some interesting old vessels. There you also have a Kids Marina for the little ones, who may spend some time steering around in an electric boat. My son loves it.
Such an instructive, educative, inspirational and dynamic video! Sharing these details of each highlight makes it more attractive and understandable. Keep working Eileen Aldis, good vibes and greetings from Ecuador.
I love your style of travel videos!! Especially the facts and the insights in history :) feels like a mini tour guide tour rather than just a view clips of the most instagramable locations :)
On Sunday I will be taking my first trip outside the UK since I was a child (over 23 years) I will be travelling to Brussels on Sunday and then onwards to Rotterdam on Monday for just under a week. I would say only 2 people inspired me to travel outside my home country and that is Anthony Bourdain and Eileen Aldis
This means a lot to hear and I'm thrilled you've been inspired to travel. Thank you for making my day by sharing this with me. I hope you have an absolutely wonderful time exploring!
As a native Torontonian (M, 28) researching a move to Rotterdam, I'm excited to see the unique innovations of the city. (including the cube houses!) I would be curious to know; considering Toronto's young/urban attitude aimed towards innovation and essential/"back-to-basics" living (i.e. Witchwood Farmers Market, Trinity Bellwoods, etc.), do you feel that Rotterdam is able to blend the European way of life with a fair sense of familiarity, or do these artistic and architectural features add only a touch of memories from homes in an otherwise completely foreign place?
Lovely video and very interesting, I was planning just day trip to Rotterdam but after watching your video, I’m gonna add 2 full days, I totally loved what I saw. Thank you
That's awesome, Ariel! I hope you'll have a wonderful time there. There's a restaurant there I really liked that you might want to check out. It's called Dudok and they're known for their apple pie. Just saying :) www.dudok.nl/

Very nice! Rotterdams best thing is the mentality of the people. When your searching for everything that’s fake Go 45 Miles north, when you want the real deal; welcome in Rotterdam!
Went to Amsterdam for the first time last year. Didn't quite like it, so I jumped on a train to Rotterdam. Wow! Home sweet home! Crossed the "Egyptian bridge" turned right an entered the Netherlands photo museum. Loved it! I'm coming back. ;) Sincerely, A Norwegian guy
Paul van Daalen we doen onze uiterste best de toeristenstroom een beetje te spreiden. Toeristen brengen ook geld in het laatje, het is niet alleen negatief
An incredible city, I adore it! Luckily for me I married a Rotterdamer, so we get to return and visit family every few years, and I never get tired of being there and walking and discovering new things (and revisiting others!). Wonderful people, vibe and so easy to get around, and as it’s somewhat in the shadow of Amsterdam, it is 100% authentic and not a tourist city. Can’t name a favourite feature, I love the whole place! [-Q]
Really cool that you actually looked into the history of Rotterdam after WW2! We call Rotterdam "the most beautifull rotten city there is" Rotten as in rot-terdam. Im subbing!
Thank You for sharing this about Rotterdam. Almost every video I look up on the Netherlands it's always Amsterdam anyone ever talks about. They act like Amsterdam is all there is to the Netherlands. I was starting to get pissed off thinking I' wouldn't find any video on any other cities in the Netherlands. This is nice to finally see something other than Amsterdam. The architect in Rotterdam is beautiful and very modern looking. I'd love to visit Rotterdam it looks beautiful.
Hey! Thanks for your comment! Yes, Amsterdam is certainly the most popular place to visit in the Netherlands (and we made videos there too) but there are lots of wonderful places, of course, to experience :) Rotterdam is totally different and interesting to see a different side.
Very nice video about my beloved city of Rotterdam, love it! Have you also been on the Euromast? Up there you definitely have the greatest view at the skyline of Rotterdam!
Thanks @Eileen. Although staying presently in Amsterdam, NL; I have been looking for places to visit oblivious of nearby Rotterdam's significance in a Tourist's book. Dear Rotterdam... here I come next weekend..
Good luck with your move! We also enjoyed Dudok for working/lunch/coffee/apple pie www.dudok.nl/vestigingen and Fenix Food Factory is #1 on my list for next time - looks lovely: www.fenixfoodfactory.nl/. If you go, let me know how it is :)
Cette vidéo donne vraiment envie de découvrir Rotterdam, peut-être une des rares villes entièrement détruites puis entièrement réinventées au niveau architectural. Merci beaucoup.
