Best way to get a pay rise. Ask your manager/ boss “what do you need me to do to hit the next pay bracket or x amount a year” they will list things. Email them confirming the list agree a review date and follow it up. Never failed me when I worked for others, everybody won. Now I run my own business I encourage my staff to push themselves and do the same.

The problem though is most employers confuse a cost of living adjustment with a raise and want the employee to do more work to get the “raise” when in reality inflation was 8.6% so the first 8% is just to keep up with the cost of living. That is not a raise. So that should be made clear before offering them your list to get an ACTUAL raise!

Good video. One thing I have noticed though is employers confuse a cost of living adjustment with a raise and want the employee to do more work to get the “raise” when in reality inflation was 8.6% so the first 8% is just to keep up with the cost of living. That is not a raise. Not getting a cost of living adjustment each year is a very real pay cut. But employers want to make you feel like you need to work harder to get cost of living adjustments and not actual real world purchasing power raises.

Several years ago (around 2007 or 2008) I went to my manager and asked how he liked his pay deduction. "What do you mean?" "Minimum wage was increased today, so the average price for everything will go up too. You have less purchasing power with your money, so unless you got a raise, you got a pay deduction." His attitude changed when I explained it that way.

@Kyle Hoorn this isn't true at all. Your assumption that the first 8.6% of a raise, when inflation is 8.6%, is not even a raise and only keeps up with inflation requires that the employee spend 100% of their paycheck on their cost of living. If they only spend 60% of their paycheck on their cost of living then the raise can be smaller than 8.6% and still provide more than a cost of living adjustment. This will depend a lot on how much that employee makes in raw dollars.

All valid points but I believe employers also make the mistake of taking good employees for granted too. Always a 2-way street. Most mid-size to large companies love the great storytellers and not necessarily loyal or hard workers. Most middle managers just know how to turn a 25% true story into 110%. Hardest part for me being in management was seeing how colleagues “add-Value” by being great storytellers, I couldn’t bring myself to drink that coolaid and sleep well at night. There are still good companies out there but there are a lot of bad ones too that can do the talking but not the walking.

I was a chef for 8 years. The amount of owners that will keep you at 16-17 an hour when you do a two person job by yourself is ridiculous. They'd rather see their best employees leave. I started a new job, 7 weeks later was off with a sickness bug for 3 days. 2 weeks after that was off with covid for 10 days. 2 days later I asked for a raise (in a roundabout way asked if he would be open to me going back self employed as things were not working out for me due to me having been self employed for 10 years previously) To my surprise he accepted, then went out his way to ask me to come into his office a couple of months later and gave me another raise. Employee here, I've been at the same S&P 500 corporate job for 7 years now, I just focus on trying my hardest to be that category 1 employee that you were talking about, and it works pretty good. I've said yes to every assignment and take on more work all the time, I never say no, never complain, never ask for anything I don't absolutely need, I never call in sick, and was even back in the office Phase 1 2020 during covid. I've got at least 5% raise every year, sometimes as much as 9%, as well as performance bonus every year. At this point I'm making almost twice what my starting pay was. I don't even have very desirable skills, by all accounts I would be easy to replace. Don't necessarily buy all this talk about don't be loyal to your employer, if you have a good employer, good coworkers, good area to live in, then give it your all, show them you are a good guy and a hard worker, and they will reward that.

Excellent points. As an employer, I would not hire someone who job hops. Yes, a change can be warranted. And yes sometimes crap happens. But if two potential hires walked into my office, the one with the most loyalty (long term on job, doesn’t bad mouth past employers, wants to give notice, etc.) would be most likely to be hired. And a job hopper would most likely not get another call.

A funny story happened early in my career when a highly specialized guy found out he was being underpaid after a rival company offered him a 50% increase on his pay check. Alarm bells starting ringing and after several management meetings they offered him 30% above the 50. Guess what happened? He left anyways because the trust was broken as they could have payed him 80% more all those years. No need to detail how much more this cost the company. The moral of the story is you have to be proactive in offering raises so whoever wants any should ask other companies.

yep, by the time the good ones leave, its cause they've already mentally prepared and that companies many times actually don't reward, you have to ask for your value. What I witnessed in my work life as a construction worker, welder, or whatever, the more money the company pays you, the more they expect from you in such ways as producing more products at a faster rate, selling more products, handling more and more other employees, etc. Companies don't want to give you more money based on what you have done for them in the past. It's always what they want you to do in the future and if they don't think you can handle more work, then it's hard to get a raise. I always climbed to the top as fast as I could getting the best pay because of my hard work ethics but when I could no longer provide more of what they expected of me, I didn't get anymore raises. So any employee that is loyal to the company and not getting any raises is what companies love to see. I don't play that kind of game.

I increased and surpassed my numbers by almost 1 million dollars. During a shortage of material and pandemic in 1 single year. I then showed her how people have been in the same territory for 5-6 years and still haven’t increased there territories numbers like I did in a single year. I asked the owner/manager for a raise so I could improve my living conditions. First he responded with "It isn't in the budget" but later approached me and asked me to write a list of what makes me believe I deserve a raise. Are you not aware of how I perform or how I complete my tasks? It made me uncomfortable and whether I made the right decision or not, I gave my notice about an hour later. Once upon a time, if an employee had a competing job offer, it meant you've already lost their loyalty. And no amount of money could buy that loyalty back. Nowadays the only way to get a raise above cost of living increase is to have a competing offer. Why? Because over time loyalty became a one-way street. Companies demand loyalty of its employees, but don't give it back. Because employees are treated less and less like an asset, and more and more like an expense. Once you understand the way corporations view their employees, you see through the corporate bullshit and realize that most of their praise is lip service and rhetoric. A month ago I left a job because of poor management. From the CEO to the lowest manager, completely mismanaged. Now I'm self employed in a specialty of which there are only a handful of high skill level people in the country. Earlier this week they hired me as a consultant/sub-contractor. For one job I made the same amount that I did working as an employee for two months. The moral of the story: Work hard, work smart, become an indispensable asset. Then go into business for yourself. If you're really good, you'll do fine.

When I do in my company, is I have what I call a personnel qualification system. Basically I have a list of objectives and qualifications that a person has to achieve and when they achieve them they get a raise automatically and move onto the next level PQS. This way whenever somebody wants more money all I say is how are you doing on your PQS. I then remind them that I do not control their raise, that they do. It's an employee's market. Although I agree there should be measurable metrics, remember it's a 2 way street. At the end of the day, employment is a business transaction. If you're not getting paid what you think you deserve for your current skill level, then move companies. Either be learning or earning. If you can do both, perfect. I generally don't ask for pay rises. I didn't get a pay rise this year, and I have had offers from other companies for $20k increases. I like the company I work for, and it hasn't bothered me because I understand we are a new company and operating very lean. However, if I don't get a pay rise in the next year, I will move companies out of necessity. If my employer isn't paying attention and pro-actively coming to me with a pay rise, then me coming to him asking for one is coming from a position of weakness, and this isn't a game I'm interested in playing. I simply take action. This is the art of the deal. Be willing to walk away from the table. I also never take a counter offer. Once you make the decision to leave, leave. Never let them entice you back into the company with more money. If they valued you, they would have offered it to you before it got to that point.

For the employees, never be loyal to your employer, ever. Do a good job at work, and be a good representative for your employer. However, ALWAYS be looking for a job with higher pay, better benefits, and more job satisfaction. NEVER EVER be loyal to your employer, it's business for them, and all about the bottom line and it should be for you as well. Employees need to have the same mentality, and always make it about your well-being and the bottom line. DO NOT let them own you, because most small business owners will take advantage of you in every way they can. Changing employers is often the fastest way to increase your pay, benefits, and job satisfaction. If it makes your boss mad that you are negotiating, they are the type you don't want to be employed by. Your employer is not a spouse or a personal relationship, it's a business deal. Stop letting your employers take advantage of you. The bad employers will eventually have all of the bad employees, and the good employers will get all the good ones. It's like chick-fil-a vs Popeyes where I live. The Chic-fil-a employees are courteous, friendly, and very helpful. The Popeyes is horrible...the employees are rude and they are never professional. It's crazy how many people do not know how long a qualified manager has to study to become a manager with anything and supervision is better than for managers that get promoted on the job as a manager, and it's even more important to know how to know if a person is a qualified manager other than there certification numbers that provide their amount in studies in managerial anything It's insulting that those who say they are qualified but all managers of career status must have five years in skills I won't mention but it lets professionals know if the persons are hired on the job promoted by anyone for any reason not known to everyone else; again I say career professional know that managerial career positions require a certain amount of skills in another career before being able to pass the other exams that must go with the one certification they got from an online class that is more than twenty-hour study Again all managerial positions require a five-year career experience and that qualification to even be considered for the actual career managerial positions that are career positions, not some few weeks of online studies or hours of it It's best to have supervision that had to be managerial before that position and rather a career positions or not those have to be learned and known Again if the person or persons are not career managerial. The best choice is supervision that supervised the number of people who need to be supervised versus paying all employees that get together to outsmart everyone else out of their raises The only person that should be getting that pay is a supervisor with a career qualification and not the certification of it and on the job promoted as one Too many people are wronging those that are actual students who have to have those learning in the career of it to do everything else they study 📚 People treating e anything like a computer of studies and not, people and computers are different in e every way and that should never be confused and that is what supervisors are there to do, making people who work great productive at what they do and yet to do better as people, not the computer people who think there is no difference between them The difference is qualifications with on-the-job skills to not certification with knowing how the computer... The real managers and supervisors of people not computers Learning skills at work is wrong that is in the classroom for whatever subject that is discussed with career objectives according to your grades not talking ability They have professional phone operators for that or secretaries that are qualified in the multi taking for just the boss that supervises office staff too So who is asking for a raise in a position that is a career position but can be promoted into a job position but job positions do not ask for raises y less they are the most productive of everyone including the business itself and they have their in office Not pay request, get the career requirement for the positions with the required book studies of it and them to ask after the number of years it is studying any career position...

What if an employee was not searching, but was contacted by another company or recruiter with a substantial offer, and they were in a position where their money was tight or were falling behind. If they took the time to put together a spreadsheet to outline a minimum amount they could stay for (not necessarily a match of the offer), would you consider it?

As much as I appreciate the insight, being loyal to your employer is something a owner would say. Hard disagree that I as a employee need to show loyalty while I get underpaid and if inflation goes up like it did the company wouldn't give me a raise. Just to clarify I like the video but most employers don't give a shit. If they can replace you with someone cheaper they will be tempted to do it even if you are loyal. In the Netherlands this isn't really possible because we do have safeguards to ensure that if you get fired you still get paid for a time (even until your next job). The reason for this is business owners tend to appease their own pockets or their shareholders so the entire company will be run on that mindset. employees will always suffer. I do agree that job hopping is not a good idea. some are just unhappy and that's fine but if ur job hopping every 3 months ur going to hit a brick wall...
@marioadabachy
@marioadabachy 2 года назад
It depends on the system and the job. The Netherlands have low salaries, and the taxes are through the roof; they charge 37% on any salary and 49.5% on anything above 69,397 EUR, which is a joke. Most companies appreciate loyalty and reimburse it with high raises because finding someone new and training them is way more expensive.

Great video from the employers point of view. The employer will get you for free if he could. Best advice, is work smart and hard, improve your skills and knowledge by working for a company, built up your resume, and look for a better paying job. Begging for a 10% raise(which doesnt even cover the cost of living increase) and being treated as they are doing you a favor, isnt worth it. Just move to the next one

What I've noticed is most people value the extroverted alpha males. I find a lot of employers value the employees that they like to go golfing with or can story tell. Also they tend to like the overconfident almost classic salesman type. I find a lot of these employees don't do the most work. They command the room and can talk the loudest and a lot of people listen to them because they confuse confidence with capability. Based on the Briggs Myers personality types I'm an INTJ (Introverted, Intuitive, Thinking, and Judging). I tend to value efficiency in the workplace. When I work for a company I find the processes that are not working or are wasting time then eliminate them. I organize people to do tasks they are best suited to do. I don't need nor want to be micromanaged. I value rational logic behind decisions not emotional feelings. When I'm in charge of projects they are finished on-time or less and under budget. I also normally the projects or jobs no one wants and do all of the dirty work to get them done. Another issue is the alpha mangers above me tend to take credit for the work I'm doing even though they really have not contributed anything. I think they take advantage of me because I don't like to be managed so they don't and stay out of my way. My company also likes to do team building and events centred on outgoing personalities such as beer nights and gatherings. Part of my personality though is I find social interaction very taxing. Which means the enjoyable experience the employer is trying to create is not for me. Generally I tend to not go to these activities. This puts me as more of an outsider with my company. That is why I've seen a few people move past me in terms of promotions because they are being seen. I think employers or perhaps society at large should value introverted people more. Many of them like myself are the cogs that keep the engines running smoothly. The quiet accountants, architects, engineers, scientists, and programmers are the under valued unsung heroes of the workplace.

Still haven’t gotten it, was then told oh yeh you got the extra month worth 5.2% pay increase 25 quid, so that’d be your pay review. Utter bs, owner is down next week & I’m going to say it to him then, get the answers I need, if not new year I’ll show up looking for him. Why say you’ll get this extra 2.5hr pay & a pay review, then say through middle management that oh yeh the extra 2.5hr pay is your pay increase. The problem is raises hardly ever keep up with the market rate. It's better to just switch to a different company if you want a decent raise. The x company will pay me this is risky better to just go to another company. Personally I say get all you can when you can because the company will eventually start to screw you. They will ask you to do double the work for a small raise when usually you aren't even at market rate.

Some companies these days will layout the career path and that includes the salary increase, bonuses , etc. while on-boarding, some even discusses these during interviews.
