Ah, the “waiting to hear back about a job” black hole- such a hard place to be! Here’s my advice on how to take more control of this period: When the interview ends: ✅ Ask interviewer when you can expect to hear back about next steps ✅ Obtain/confirm their email so you can send a thank you note ⏰ 12-24 hours later 👉🏼📧 send follow-up thank you email 🗓️ Status update deadline (or if they didn’t give one, 2-3 weeks later of radio silence): send a check in email reiterating interest Polite, professional checkins show passion, focus, enthusiasm and interest. That’s all employers want! I can’t speak for everyone (obviously lol) but I’ve personally never hired a candidate who did not send a follow up email after the interview. 💪🏼 Showing initiative and drive is super appealing to employers! You got this! 👏🏼

I was literally told once that I got the job BECAUSE I followed up with them. I sent them an email telling them how much I enjoyed the interview, and reiterated why I was a good fit, and when they called me back, HR said she loved my email and that's what ultimately sold them. I also, followed up on a job that I initially didn't get, just to say thank you, and how much I appreciated the opportunity to interview. When the person they hired failed the drug test, they immediately called me. I've been there just over a year now.

This is extremely rude when companies do not get back to you in a timely manner. I interviewed for a job, and the interview went very well. However, the company did not get back to me for over a month so I called and left messages to let them know that I needed to know about their decision. After a number of days went by, they finally called me back and I told them I had accepted another job. They were upset that I took another job as they were going to offer me the job. There are windows of opportunity for both parties and I could no longer wait to hear back from them and I needed to seek employment elsewhere. For them to be upset with me was unacceptable.

I’d feel awkward sending an email like that. I’d make mine a little more simple and say thank you for taking the time to interview with me, ask for updates on the hiring decision, and maybe one small comment on how much you’d love to join their team.

Tbh, I don't want to upset people but the vast majority of the time if you haven't heard back it's because you haven't got the job. However, there are some instances where they are just really slow (which is a slight red flag itself, remember interviews work both ways) so following up is worth it in this case.

Agreed, plus, do not write sth like "please let me know what can I do to help".... They aren't idiots, they do not need candiates to help them chose! Most likely they had more people to interview (especially if they interviewed for more than one position at the same time), they have some additional discussions if they had candidates with disabilities or if they need to reach some type of quota or someone simply got sick or is in holidays. Sure, write a follow up, but be normal in it!

I interviewed for a job with the State. At the end of the interview the last question I asked was about the hiring process and when I could expect to hear back from them. They all kinda chuckled and the lead interviewer said nothing the state does is done quickly. He said it generally takes from 1 to 3 months to make a decision and they don’t send a sorry you were not chosen email so if I don’t hear back from them after 3 months or so I prob wont hear anything. So shook hands all around and told them I was looking forward to working with them all. The next day I sent the thank you for interviewing me e mail and then forgot all about the job. I set my sights on the next two interviews and moved on. Two months later after I had accepted a job offer and was in my second week I get a phone call from a strange number not flagged on my phone as scam So I answer. It’s the state asking If I’m still interested in the position. Extremely interested was what I said. They sent a conditional offer and I spent the next 4 weeks jumping thru hoops and passed everything and got a firm offer and start date.

I do this after applying as well, I normally wait a week or two and then shoot them an email. Most of the time, it turns out with getting a response of “we have already hired for this role but thank you for the interest” or some information on how the hiring and selection process is going. Either way, I get informed on what’s happening with my application and i’m not left guessing.

I don’t bother with follow up emails anymore. If I interviewed, it’s on them to get back to me. Sending a follow up email isn’t going to change anything. If they want to hire you, they will contact you to make an offer. If you haven’t heard back; either they filled the position, or they may still get back to you. I’m personally tired of wasting precious time and energy so I’d rather put that same energy into applying for a new job, or contacting a recruiter. These employers need to get their shit together. I’m moving on faster now, and it’s better for my mental health. Also, I enjoy rejecting employers as I find better opportunities. Ya’ll should try it.

When this happens, just email whichever human contacted you last (unless they told you to email a different person, of course). If you have literally no contact information for any human at the entire place, write them off and keep interviewing. No, it's an interview, it works both ways. If they don't have the respect of your time to even get back to you in a reasonable timely manner, they won't respect you when you work there. So, if you don't care and just look for the paycheck, then yeah, push more and get the job to work bare minimum, but otherwise, you deserve better and look for plenty of other positions, because they are looking at plenty of applications too (don't just put all your effort in one company)

I had this happen with my current job. Three weeks had passed and I was suspicious why I wouldn't have heard anything yet, because the HR rep I had my screening call with was enthusiastic, said it's very rare for them to come across someone with my level of experience, etc. I sent him an email to follow up and he basically gave a non-committal response and said that if I haven't received any kind of email notification, I'm still being considered. The director of the job I applied for emailed me within a couple hours of following up with that HR recruiter and scheduled an interview for the next day. After I got hired, I gathered through conversation that recruiter was new and more than likely dropped the ball on notifying the hiring manager regarding my application 😅 If I had to do it over again, I'd follow up after a week, not wait 3 weeks.

Saying again for the cheap seats: some places are sloooow. It took two months after my interview to get confirmation (though admittedly some of that was the holidays). So yes, do ask when you can expect return contact, but also ask who you can contact for updates. Depending on the place, the person doing your interview isn't prepared to have 4+ contacts about the results, or it has to go through dedicated HR.

If there are millions of people at any given time trying to find a job, I know that my chances aren't always going to be really high even if I had college degrees in that field because then all that happens is the pool just gets a bit smaller, going from millions of applicants to thousands. It was also unproffesional for them to just ghost candidates like that and then get mad when they follow up.

I got a job offer for an interview I had 6 months after the interview. Since my only other options were call centers, I said yes. This boss turned out to be the worst communicator I've ever met lol. Super nice, but the 6-month waiting period was a lot more telling than I realized

My process was so long it took me from April 22, when I applied, to March 23 when I started. Many interviews and waiting periods inbetween

I remember last year I had my first interview at the start of April for an assistant manager position at a bank, and within a few days met with the regional manager for my second interview. I was told that they were hiring for this position rather quickly and a decision would be made close to the end of the month. April passes with no word, so I decided to call the manager sometime in mid May. He told me they were still interviewing candidates but he'd call me with an answer. All of May, June, and July pass. I got an email in August that I wasn't picked. I was a little sad but I had another interview set up for September for the same position elsewhere. I did the interview in September and got an email the next day with an offer of employment.

This works! I have done this before and I don’t always get the job but they do know I am interested. Personally I wait a week after they tell me the timeline because sometimes hiring decisions are delayed from heavy work loads or waiting on HR to do their part.

I got chewed out for emailing someone back one time. They said that they appreciated a sense of humor so I gave them my sense of humor and a voicemail and they didn’t appreciate it.

One time the interviewer basically told me I had the job and I would hear back by the next day so I called a couple days later and his boss answered and said "you didn't need to call we can let you know when we decide" sounding really annoyed. I didn't hear from them but I think I'm okay with it.

I'm not glad but I am in a way that I'm not the only one. I ended up taking another job and now the first job does want me to start ASAP even though no one in HR called me to do any type of paperwork! 😅

I learned from you that I should ask about when I'll learn more and that I should email if I don't hear anything back before it. They said two weeks and that two week mark was on friday. I was considering emailing them but didnt get around and today I got an email saying they need a little but more time but might want to hire me permanently, not only for the summer that I applied for 😱

As a hiring manager I agree it never hurts to follow up politely. Sometimes it takes a while to get through the process, sometimes the position is based on other factors out of control of the hiring manager.

Once I followed up and was told i was unprofessional to follow up. Looking back I realized I dodged a bullet. Red flag number one, they had "pay" listed as a benefit😂.

I always send a thank you email. Usually within a few hours. They usually always state when they will be making final decisions within the interview. But I will definitely keep that in mind if they don’t.

I can only speak for tech industry in terms of pace - generally if they are interested, the recruiter will reach you within 3 days just to keep you warm even if they haven't come to a decision. If you hear nothing in 2 weeks, it's likely gone.

It took 6 months for my current company to reply back to me and offer the job. I’ve been working for them for 4 years now, and I’m very happy. I asked my boss why it took him so long; he said there were 200+ resumes and too many deadline projects. Job hiring is more like a back burner type of work lol

Erin HELP! I just finished my first two weeks of training at a job and I know I do not want to stay here. I had been excited about working here but the co-workers and culture are actually kind of awful! The reality of this job is a very bad fit. How do I professionally leave when they just invested all this time hiring and training me??

A super important caveat to this is that you should not send more than one followup, or to send one too soon. Take whatever timeline they gave you and wait one extra week before following up. So if they said they'd get back to you in a week, wait two weeks before you send an email. If they said they'd get back to you in 3-4 weeks, wait until you're in week 5. Sending a polite followup email to ask about the status of your application isn't really going to sway them one way or the other. But it *can* hurt your chances if you're sending multiple emails or sending an email to check in (aka NOT a thank you email) before the time they said they'd get back to you because it makes you look pushy/rude/like you can't follow basic instructions. Even if they don't get back to you when they said they would, that doesn't necessarily mean they're ghosting you. It could mean that, since lots of companies do. Which is rude and annoying but there's nothing you can do about that unless you wanna chance getting put on a "do not hire ever" list. But it could mean that a key person went on vacation and they can't make a decision until they're back, or that you're their second choice and they don't want to say anything to you until their first choice responds to an offer, or that the new fiscal year rolled over and the position might be put on hold while they fight with HR to make an exception to a hiring freeze, or that they way underestimated how long it would actually take to hire someone, or some kind of crisis happened and they're waiting to resolve it before they move forward with hiring, or they had a second position open up and they're trying to speed up all the paperwork for that one so they can hire from the same pool of applicants as the first position. I've actually had that last one happen to me - they hired someone else for the position I applied for, had me do one more interview, then hired me for that second position which was probably a slightly better fit anyway!
