Thank you! I use osmocote for younger trees and Biogold for older trees!

What fertiliser do you use and how old are the trees when you start feeding them?

For young seedlings, I mainly use Osmocote Plus with high N. I let them grow slow for the first year to develop shorter internodes & have branches at the lower part of the tree then start fertilizing aggressively from the following Spring in general.

I don't usually apply any fertilizer for new cuttings. If you want, you can try a liquid based plant vitalizer etc but it's optional IMO.

How do you winterize newly germinated JM seeds? I have some JM seeds that has put out its germ leaves and I'm think ahead to their 2022 winter care. Thank you for your videos, they are informative.

Glad to hear my videos are informative, thank you! I usually move them to an unheated greenhouse around Nov/Dec (8b) when the temp consistently goes below 40F to be safe..

For those who don’t have a green house/unheated garage: I live in Atlantic Canada zone 5 with many extreme cold winter days. I left my Jpm 6-month old seedlings outside, with pot covered in mulch last November. I watered a couple of times b4 December. Then left them be. I took them out in April. They have been growing well since.

Question what do I do if my japanese Maple's leaves have brown spots on them?

Depends. If it was caused by sun/heat, I will add shade cloth or move it under the shade and remove all scorched leaves. If not, I would proactively apply fungicide on a regular basis.

Hi I also live in the PNW. I just got 20 very young Japanese maple seedlings and I put them in 6 pack small pots. My question is, how do you overwinter them in small pots? I would worry about them freezing through.

I keep them in my unheated greenhouse during the winter and they survive just fine every year in the PNW. If temp goes below 23-25F, I may move them to a bit warmer place temporarily to be safe :)

Hello, just one question, when many seedlings germinate in a small pot, when it is best time to plant them separately?

i have each year about 500 seedlings (stupid i know) :-).-) i plant the seperatly when the have the first leave (not the germ leaf)

Yeah you can do that. Or you can wait till mid/late spring to plant them separately without cutting or disturbing the roots.

Do maple seedlings grow in the tropics Goa ( India) .

It can grow for maybe several years then becomes weak if they don't go into dormancy at all.

Momiji, I have a question could you please address this soon. I purchased some trees from a nursery and of course the soil quality and care from them was terrible. I am having mostly trouble with my reds and some of the green maples. They get about 5-6 hours of full sun from 7-12 then the rest of the day shade. I don't have a green house. It gets about 85-90 degrees some days during the days and it will get a bit hotter. I am noticing some leaf damage on my new spring growth. Is 5-6 hours of full morning sun too much? I know the nursery probably had their plants in a green house so it's tough for some to make the transition into the outside. My small Gingkos on the other hand seem to love that amount of sun. They're thriving. How much sun do your Japanese maples receive?

How much sun depends on the cultiver and where you live. Some JMs like Emperor can tolerate more direct sun than others but in general JM leaves are more sensitive and can easily be scorched by sun. I would monitor how each tree reacts and make adjustments as needed by moving them around to control the sun exposure or add shade cloth as needed etc.

@@MomijiEn Thank you! I may just move them to full shade until fall honestly. This is my first year with JMs. So far so good, none have died or anything but yeah, the sun seems to be thrashing them. The only two that seem to be doing good for me right now in this heat are two that look to be closely related to Bloodgood.
