Rebekah discusses your questions related to lipedema and nutrition. Is the keto diet good for lipedema? What should I eat if I have lipedema? What not to eat with lipedema? How much fat should I eat? What is a good lipedema diet? She shares her experience, the importance of exploring food sensitivities, and what worked to help her lose more than 100 pounds and improve her lipedema and lymphedema symptoms.
Remember to work with your own care team to figure out what will work best for you. Rebekah is not a doctor or a nutritionist and this is solely her experience. Your body is different.

Same for me. I started in August with keto and only found out a month ago that I have lipedema. My doc fat shamed me a d told me to take diet pills. Which thankfully idid t take. I have been in the emergency services in hospital few times for my swollen legs, they didn't know what was wrong with me, but just wanted to give me Cortison. I refused. Today I ha e lost 3 sizes on the keto. My legs still swell but I have bought some compression leggins and massage my legs almost every night. Since I lost weight I can really feel the diseased fat that was hiding underneath 😢 It's so sad. I am getting more compassionate with my body which is awesome and I'm even starting to exercise (trampoline) which give me happy hormones 😂

just celebrated my 5th keto-versary this month! lost 110 pounds over 2 years - slower than most and on purpose to really just make 1 change at a time and make it a habbit before changing something else. Then I maintained for almost 3 years, and 2 months ago I stopped dairy and almond flour and lost 15 more pounds! crazy! there are so many versions of keto and so many options and more recipes available than you will ever have time to try! my goal was to try 1 new recipe per week. keeps it interesting and adventurous! keto has given me freedom from 27 health issues! including type 2 diabetes and low thyroid! I'm never hungry and never have cravings because I actually give my body the nourishment it needs, all while out-eating the men in my house! haha! I just can't imagine ever going back to my old life! keto for life!❤🎉

Awesome success! How many carbs do you eat a day?
@alanacreates
@alanacreates 2 месяца назад
@jolynn8675 Truthfully, I don't count. I did for a few weeks ar the very beginning just to get bearings on general ballpark quantity/serving sizes and to be able to evaluate the info on packaged foods, with the goal of around 20 net carbs per day... then based on that just kind of stuck with yes foods and no foods. so I likely fluctuate between 10 and 30 net grams per day??
@alanacreates
@alanacreates 2 месяца назад
@sturdywoman a big way to keep it sustainable for me is to try one new recipe each week. some are great and some are flops... but it is always different and keeps things interesting. 5 years later and there are still thousands of recipes out there I haven't tried yet! Or I might look at old fav recipes and try substitutes to ketofy it!

on my 5 year keto journey I have regularly eaten these fruits: berries (approx 1/4 cup a day of blueberries or strawberries or raspberries or blackberries), lemon, lime, avocado, cucumber, tomato, bell pepper (yes, those are all scientifically classified as fruit)

I had first long limb gastric bypass due to lower bk facet joints deterioration and cldn't walk. Then got lymphatic cancer in 2011 and have been in remission. I was diag. With a small bowels infection Sebo and have been reading on gut health. I tried Carnivore but had a hard time with bowel movements without the veggies and it was very boring. I need several small meals a day but it is hard for me as bad habits are hard to get rid of. I am 76 and dislike my legs and arms. No more surgery. I just want to be able to move around better. My spine is also injured and I have brain injuries also. So I think the Fiid Sensitivity test is a good idea. Your right, one size doesn't fit all. Haven't found my nitch yet. Thank you Rebekah for sharing your experience and information. I was never medically diagnosed with lipedema but the more I learn about it, there is no doubt that I do have it. And I agree with you and now it makes more sense than ever why diets never worked for me until I stumbled upon the keto and carnivore diet. They are the only diets that i see my body react to, But unfortunately I don't see that the adipose clumps really go away and maybe the only way to intervene on them is surgically. I currently take supplements to help the lymphatic system which I see help with heaviness and pain And I just hope that by combining food, supplements, dry brushing, vibrating plate it doesn't get worse over time...

there are compression leggings [ on amazon and elsewhere] that help as well. there are medical grade and also much more comfortable ‘normal’. compression leggings WITH POCKETS! and patterns. if you add those to everything you’re doing, they will help, tho’ ultimately yes, surgery is the only treatment that buys time by removing enough so that it’s a reset. just had the front of my thighs done and i can see my KNEECAPS for the first time in decades.

What do eggs do to you? Not sure what kind of sensitivities to look for.
@barkingsquirrel7166
@barkingsquirrel7166 3 месяца назад
Egg whites are high in histamines. Egg yolks don't have histamine. The yolk is where almost all of the extraordinary nutrition resides. This is information for chicken eggs. Its probably the same for duck eggs. SO, it matters whether you have an actual ALLERGY to chicken eggs or you are reacting to HISTAMINES in the egg white. If you are allergic to chicken eggs, confirmed by an allergist, definitely try duck eggs. I hear they are delicious! But some people are allergic to duck eggs, but not to chicken eggs. You only know by trying... You might look up Histamine Intolerance if you have distress after eating certain foods. Could help you navigate choosing items for your diet. Also, look up MCAS [Mast Cell Activation Syndrome] -- which is the next level above Histamine Intolerance. Good luck.
@barkingsquirrel7166
@barkingsquirrel7166 3 месяца назад
P.S. If you can eat egg yolks, you can use them in many creative ways. Delicious as a sauce on steaks, hamburgers and other meats and seafood. You can make your own mayonnaise with melted butter [no seed oils -- they are inflammatory]. Just find a mayonnaise recipe that asks for egg yolks, not whole eggs. Yum. Mayonnaise solves so many problems! You can make Bernaise sauce. So delicious.
@barkingsquirrel7166
@barkingsquirrel7166 3 месяца назад
P.P.S. : MCAS does occur relatively frequently in Lipedema patients. And, you can thicken cooking juices from meat into a sauce or gravy by beating egg yolks into the juices. But you must temper the eggs first by whisking in a small amount of hot juices into the egg yolks. Yes, French cooking. But worth learning if you want to avoid carbs, flour, corn starch. Just google "tempering eggs." Should also be lots of RU-vid videos.

I did keto for over two years and I was frankly miserable the whole time. I had great results (in terms of weight loss), but the whole time my mental state was just awful. I then transitioned to no wheat, no potatoes, just brown rice, whole grains (rye, barley, buckwheat) and it was a LOT better (basically mediterranean diet). Due to the keto, I had developed a b12 deficiency anemia and am severely D vitamin deficient. At the moment, I'm eating normally, avoiding only processed foods and sugar, taking high doses of B12, vit D, zinc and magnesium and I can function so much better, no food sensitivities, BUT the weight is back. Those food sensitivity tests are not accurate! They can react to foods you’ve most recently eaten. It is better to just do an elimination diet for a month or 2 and then add only one food back for a week or two and see how you react.
@sturdywoman
@sturdywoman 7 месяцев назад
@samanthakitch4736 you are 100% right that recommendations should be paired with an elimination diet. However, the tests can provide a nice starting point for people who are unsure where to start exploring possible sensitivities. They are also a nice option for those who are uninsured, have limited access to health care, or don't have a supportive provider.

Food prices seem to be outrageous everywhere @rosaliecahoo425! One of my favorite low-cost meats is bone-in skin-on chicken thighs. They give you a lot of bang for your money. I hear you though! One thing to keep in mind is you will find that the longer you do keto the smaller your appetite gets and the less food you end up buying in general. Good luck! ♥

When doing keto, high fat, what types of fat because fat is an inflammatory contributor. Also meats, am told to limit, eat organic grass fed meat due to the regular meat that has more omega 6 fats. Do you have an example for what you eat in a week?

Stevia is not good at all. Anything diet. It is better to eat sugar than diet. A proven fact. So you have done amazing accomplish me ent. I suffer from 53 years of lymphodema. Osteomyelitis doctors only see it only as far or a fatty liver. I once gained 24 lbs from 10 pm to 8 am. In Jan 2002 I gained 55 IBS in 23 days. I associated it with not letting a serious setback bring me to a depression. Al also eating Cheetos MSG I was not aware of. Somehow the extraction from seaweed and injection into food has a staggering result. Well I attribute the absorption to psychological reaction.

Have you heard there’s more success with keto than carnivore? I’ve been on carnivore for 2 months, and some success, but not weight loss yet. Suggestions?
@sturdywoman
@sturdywoman 6 месяцев назад
@joelsvision not necessarily! Everybody's body is different and you may have to experiment to figure out what your likes and how you feel best. Expect your body to go through a healing stage that can take a few months. Importantly, remember that the scale lies. I didn't weigh myself for months when I first started but I DID take pictures and measure myself. You can see how that went in my before and after video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MwK_aUNbG-Y.html Keep up the good work!

@sturdywoman
@sturdywoman 5 месяцев назад
@jacquelinecullen5873 I don't know why you couldn't do keto without beef or lamb. You'd just want to make sure you were getting enough protein from other sources that work for you. If you have concerns, I think this and your question about cauliflower/broccoli would be great questions for a lipedema-informed nutritionist. There are a lot of different protocols to try, so find one that works for you. I like alternate day fasting because I don't like looking at the clock, but I've also recently done a few 3-day fasts which gave good results. I certainly don't do it all the time and take breaks, particularly during stressful periods. Make sure you spend a good amount of time getting fat adapted through keto before giving it a try.

Be careful with Keto if you have kidney problems. TL&DR: Just… be careful with keto. Start eating carbs if you are trying to become pregnant or think you may be pregnant. Don’t start it if you have any markers of kidney function problems, and definitely track those markers carefully if you are on keto diets. My story: I have had a whole journey with PCOS and Celiac disease being part of my picture. I tried Atkins (this was in the early 90’s) which is how I discovered the celiac spite of being obese and ridiculously unable to lose weight in spite of severe calorie restriction and at least 90 minutes a day of intensive exercise. Once I started Atkins induction I lost 60lbs in three months, most of which was inflammation. Brain fog cleared, periods came back, everything got better. Sort of. I had a hard time getting myself to consume more than about 900 calories a day. I was tracking calories and carefully kept my intake in the range of 1600-2000, but I was more or less force feeding myself. Also, I was constantly ANGRY and had real difficulty sleeping due to constant agitation. As I progressed with the Atkins program adding back vegetables and low-GI foods, everything normalized. I ended up in the Zone diet range, with a balance of macronutrients, high soluble fiber, and treating grains and sugar as condiments, not the focus of any meal. That has suited me well for years. Along my journey I got pregnant, and low carb diets are terrible for pregnant women, particularly in early pregnancy. Morning sickness and its big brother hyperemesis are cause by the placenta detecting low blood glucose levels. (There is lots of science on this- I can get citations if anyone cares. Waking up to crackers and ginger ale turns out to be great advice!!) No one knew this in the 90’s, so I ended up having five ER visits and two hospital admissions for severe dehydration before getting sent home with a central iv line, dextrose bags, and instructions to stop eating or drinking anything at all for at least 30 days. This permanently damaged my kidneys.

I understand that you can lose a lot of weight doing keto, but it's concerning that the diet has been ranked worst for heart health. Keto diets more than double the risk of serious heart problems. Fiber, which keto is lacking, is important for so many things, including the gut microbiome. I know people who do keto say they feel great, etc. but not much is known about its long-term effects. From everything I've read, it's not meant to be a long-term diet. There are safer ways to lose weight than keto.❤️
