Is Singaporean food delicious? What to eat while visiting Singapore? This video reveals one of the most epic days we have in Singapore so far. We explored deep into the local experience and food culture in Singapore (particularly in Katong neighborhood) - one of the heritage areas of Singapore. In this video, you will get to explore with us the highlight of Singaporean cuisine, We get a chance to also try some of the national dish of Singapore like Hainanese chicken rice and Singapore Laksa ( which is recommended as what you should not miss while traveling in Singapore).

Sorry, I have to correct some info from your video. 1) For the Laksa, It's not kaffir lime leaves. At least not for SIngapore version Laksa, it's actually laksa leaves or scientifically known as Persicaria odorata. 2) The Hainanese chicken rice is not a dish from Hainan. You won't find that dish in Hainan, trust me I have a hainanese relative from China, over there it is called Weng Chang Chicken and it is different, it probably may have inspire this dish but it is different especially on how the rice and the chili are prepared. The reason it is called Hainanese chicken rice is because it is a dish created by the early immigrants who were hainanese, a chinese dialect group. 3) The sour laksa which you have tried in Malaysia is called the Penang laksa, the Singapore version is more like the Nyonya Laksa which also can be found in Malaysia.

So glad you guys explored Katong. Many tourists go to Newton expecting great Singapore food but locals will tell you, never to go to Newton. It’s a hyped up tourists destination. Just to clarify, you won’t find Hainanese chicken rice in Hainan or any part of China for that matter. It’s a dish native to Sg & M’sia. (:

Glad u guys had a great time trying out the local food! But some information that perhaps could have been more accurately given by the guide: 1) the leaves in the laksa are not lime leaves 2) chicken meat tends to be cold because the chefs soak a freshly steamed chicken into ice water to stop the latent heat from cooking the chicken further and toughening the meat. Oh and it is not a dish from Hainan china. 3) the bandung drink is a combination of rose syrup + evaporated milk, not condensed milk. In case you wanna recreate the drink again :)

I love watching visitors discover Singapore. It helps me appreciate Singapore more. Lots of comments correcting some information in the video (e.g. laksa leaf), but these errors are understandable. Culture is living. So here are my comments. I offer them as my understanding and opinion. Not as the "gospel truth". Prata. Prata in Singapore is not the same as paratha in India. But it was probably an attempt to create paratha (as the Indians know it), and because of the lack of authentic ingredients (I believe the flour is different), they created "prata" or "roti prata" ('roti' just means bread). In Malaysia you can't get prata. Over there it's called "roti canai" (soft "c", pronounced "channai"). But it taste the same (at least to me). And I think you can get prata (or a version of it) in Thailand (maybe the southern region?), and I am given to understand that there they eat prata with condensed milk. Maybe Tah could confirm? Laksa. I know the sour laksa as "Assam Laksa", and the spicy coconut rich laksa as "Curry Laksa". I've also heard them called "Penang Laksa" and "Nyonya Laksa" respectively. I'm not a fan of Assam Laksa/Penang Laksa, and most Laksa in Singapore are the Curry Laksa (see "Katong Laksa"). "Laksa" is (according to one source I came across) a rough translation (bastardisation) of "spicy sand" in one Chinese dialect, in reference to the chilli and dried shrimp (the dried shrimp - hae bi - looks like coarse sand) used make the base of Laksa. I do not know if its true. I find it amusing, and offer it as an amusing anecdote. And because tastes and ingredients are unique, there are many variations of Laksa from various regions. But Assam and Curry are the two I know. Chicken Rice. We call it Hainanese Chicken Rice because that is its origins. Someone decided to cook some chicken and rice (?) the way they did in Hainan. It was fine. But it wasn't spicy enough for these parts of the world. So they added chilli sauce. Then minced ginger. Then somehow along the way, it got better and better and different from how it was originally done in Hainan. But we still call it Hainanese Chicken Rice. Because TRADITION! Also, if you don't know your origins, you lose yourself, your culture, and... something. Anyway, I hope you had a wonderful time and will be back to Singapore in the future.

Singaporean here. Hope you enjoyed Singapore! Katong Laksa is slightly special. it is meant to be shorter (the noodles) so you can eat it with the spoon. The typical laksa at the Hawker centres have longer noodles which require you to eat with chopsticks. Malaysian's laksa is typically sour and uses fish (Asam Laksa). Singapore's laksa is usually with chicken. Anyways, great video. Thanks for representing my country well.

Laksa in Malaysia has many different type. The one in Singapore is the same as in KL which is curry laksa and the one in Penang that is sour is called Penang laksa and they don't have curry is just shrimp paste. So from the NOrth to the South the taste of laksa is different. if you go to Melaka and middle south Johore they have added lots of coconut milk which makes the laksa sweeter and medium hot. So everywhere in Malaysia are different. In Singapore, they too have different tastes laksa in different food court center.

The comment by your guide regarding the leaves in the laksa is wrong. It is called laksa leaves or Vietnamese coriander. It is used from Vietnam all the way to Indonesia and is extremely essential in both types of laksa. Kaffir lime leaves are firmer, thicker and more pungent. Tah should know the difference since she is Thai.

The malaysia laska you ate should be assam laksa - It’s made with ikan kembung (mackerel) and assam (tamarind) for a slight hint of sourness in the broth. Other key ingredients include shredded fish, sliced cucumber, onions, pineapple, mint and har cheong (a type of prawn/shrimp paste). There are different types of 'laksa'
