After the winter of 2022-2023, the shot hole borers really hit the Grimal hard. Lots of die back, and mature wood lost. It seems as if the roots are still good, and the trees are trying to regrow from the base. A few of the trees were hit by beetles, but showed much less die back, so there must be some that are resistant to the fungus that the beetle infects the trees with. A sad day, but when it all boils down, no biodiversity was lost, just biomass. I had about 12 nice fruiting Grimals, now I've been cut down to 6.5. Considering al the seedlings I have from these trees (over 500), I'd say I'm doing quite well...not to mention the hybrids too! It's all part of the game when your growing rare fruits in marginal zones, and pushing the limits, introducing new species/varieties to your state!
