i was having to make a choice my self im going to roll with the union but i have to go through the apprentice training first good luck to all just go for it
On my last year of highschool and had a representative come to our school and went over IBEW and its benefits and just that basics of whats to expect when joining the workforce. I was pulled, here i am now just doing research on it and this video truly saved the hell out of that anxiousness before joining. I appreciate this video, truly.
Thanks bra I was one of them that freaked out. I’m in my second year and love the work.seriously love it.1st and second year IS DIFFICULT with DC and AC theory just don’t piss it off. You got this.
Thanks for this video! I’m in the process of applying. I went to college and got a degree so that I could go to school and get ANOTHER degree, but the loans are just not worth it. This is the route I want to go to start my career and to start my life. God willing, I get accepted into the program. Thanks for your tips!
You're welcome, good luck. Sometimes we take the back streets to our destination and we are better for it. I hope that's the case for you. I lucked into the IBEW at 21 years old and haven't looked back.
@@unplecablenpc7000 applied in january 2019, test in july, interview in october, signed job offer this month(november), orientation in december. class january 2020
Thanks for this lol. I’m 20. I’ve only ever had one job (fast food) and my dad’s getting older. Been a journeyman wireman for 18 years and i decided to put an application in. I’d love to have the opportunity to work with him before it’s too late, but I’m pretty terrified of the commitment and this video helped out a bit
Same bro im 20 but with no work experience! Was messing up but turning it around applied about a month ago. Pops was a electrician as well but he’s getting older and can’t work as much. Lets get it!
@@Jack-qm9si im about to take my craft certification to finish out my first year! Im loving it. I laugh every day, i come home feeling satisfied, i make good money, its a blast man! I cannot recommend it enough
Thanks for the video! Honestly I've always heard great things about the IBEW, and all of the jobs ive been in, it never feels like my voice is heard, like im not doing anything with my life, just a drone, no brotherhood, no family. I've always dreamed of joining the IBEW and becoming an electrician in a place and career I can be proud of, to have that brotherhood, and be the best I can be and grow within the career, ever since I was in highschool and I first heard of them from my construction teacher, I loved it so much I took it 2 years of that class. I applied 2 and a half months ago and I have my interview this Thursday, May 28th! I'm so excited and a little nervous, I can't wait to have it and I really hope I am accepted, I will try my best.
Thank you for the video! I really helped a lot! My one question is what do I do if I don't get accepted into the apprenticeship either because I didn't get past the preliminary exam or the interview? Do I have wait a certain amount of time to re-apply or can I not re-apply at all? This is the part that I am most nervous about! But I am sure it will be fine. Thanks to your video, I feel more prepared in the first place! Thank you!
Is it possible for me to join local union 3 straight after trade school? Or do I have to put in a couple months of experience in the job first and then apply?
great vid, im seeing this a year after the post and its time to do the updated COVID version and forgive my ignorance if you already did. and please mention a firm handshake goes along way.
I’ve never seen anything with a Union take only “weeks” lol. I’ve applied to 3 apprenticeships. ALBAT took roughly 2 years to get to the interview process. SELCAT by far the fastest and it was still 9 months or so.
They rank you based on your interview so if you didn't rank within the top 100 you wont be getting into an apprenticeship that year. And every time more people interview and they get ranked better that pushes you back on the list. Most say you need to rank top 60!
I live in NorCal can anyone send me the correct website or link for the application there’s like 5 sites I just wanna makes sure I’m applying to the right thing
Thank you for the advice. I have my test coming up in a month and I have been studying like crazy. If I ace the test and the interview goes well but i do not have electrical experience do you think I have a chance to get in? I'm 19 and have my CDL with about 8 months of driving experience and was a laborer in the pipeline for a couple short jobs. Thanks for the feedback.
Electrical experience is not a requirement. In fact I would contend that if it were me I would prefer a green apprentice with zero experience. Reason being that you are a blank slate and haven't picked up any bad habits yet.
I'm currently taking electrical technology certification at my local accredited community College. After I finish would any of that transfer over to the IBEW ? Or how does that work when I apply for an apprenticeship? Sorry if this is a dumb question im new to this but I really enjoy what I'm learning so far.
It's not a dumb question at all. You would need to contact the local jatc which runs the apprenticeship program for an accurate answer though. What I will say is that it will be helpful in understanding the material you will be learning in theory class.
Appreciate this video, I’m waiting for the union to call me up for an interview, local 3 in nyc. any other advise you can recommended me that wasn’t mentioned in this video? Tips for the interview would be great my man. Thanks
Can u apply to a bunch of difference ibew apprenticeships or one and also I haven’t receive my diploma from my school I graduated last year from hs but due to corona was never able to pick up you think I can still apply?
Just did the math course, passed it and got my certificate. Applied and submitted my application. Got approved and now im waiting for my aptitude test date.🤞🤞🤞 fingers crossed.
Wish I did this 6 years ago . 6 years with a LLC company did a lot of new construction, rewires a lil bit of commercial … if I want to join my local union how would I be placed on the job skill if that’s makes sense . Would I have to join the apprenticeship program and start off from the bottom ? Wish I new somebody here in San Antonio with some knowledge about this
Experience plays a role in how you're classified. The route you choose to become a journeyman is either apprenticeship or the upgrade program. There are requirements either way. The local near you can better answer those questions.
Im 19 and Im thinking about becoming an electrician I always liked working with my hands. But my question is Do you need any experience starting with the apprenticeship because I’m willing to work my ass off and soak up as much knowledge as I can in this trade.
@union minded you mentioned going into the interview with a clean haircut, I have long hair for personal reasons and was wondering if that will be an issue?
Hey Eric, I recently interviewed for the IBEW apprenticeship for the Sound and Comm. Program. I believe the interview went great I know that the program I interviewed for is not as popular as the Electrician program but I wanted to get an idea of how long the waiting period would be before I’m accepted into the apprenticeship. Thank you for the tremendous information you provide for us aspiring apprentices.
Hey Israel, sorry for taking so long to respond. As far as how long you can expect to wait before you hear back my advice would be to call the hall for updates on your application status. Call everyday if you do not get an answer.
You may be put to work before you get accepted as an apprentice as well. If that's the case you need to treat the job as an ongoing interview and be the best helper ever. Ask for recommendation letters to boost your chances of being accepted.
hey i was wondering if i went to become an apprenticeship for 5 years to become an electrician (journeyman ) after i’m done and i get a certificate will i be able to get a job after i’m done with the 5 years and i get my certificate or would i have to attend a trade school or college to continue this career
Apprenticeship is the trade school. You will upon graduation carry a yellow ticket which will allow you to work in any local across the country. You will have the knowledge to be able to sit for any state journeyman license test to become state certified.
Experience is not one of the requirements for apprenticeship. When I joined I didn't know anything about the trade. I was a security guard. I wasn't even a good security guard. Lol.
Hey man i’m 17 i’ll be 18 later this month. I was planning to become a apprentice instead of going to Line School. So would that be me “signing the books” as a ground man? And then just randomly getting calls for work every once in a while or would this be a full time job because i’m seeing so much stuff that’s it’s starting to confuse me 😂. Thanks man i appreciate it!
Apprenticeship is a full time job and classes. This all happens when you're accepted into the program. Some locals will put you to work as a helper while you're going through the application process if they have a sufficient amount of work. Once you start classes though you're gainfully employed throughout apprenticeship as long as you keep your scores up and you show up to work everyday and give 8 hours of work for 8 hours of pay.
Hey how is the test scores is it a combined score of math and reading I felt I did so so on math but amazing on reading will my reading make up for Th at pls and thank you
It’s not like college where you stay on campus. These apprenticeships are 3-5 years depending on where you are and exactly what specialty you are in (inside wireman, residential wireman, outside lineman, etc). Most of the apprenticeship will actually be on the job training. Usually you go to class one day per week and you get paid for classroom time just like you get paid on a typical work day. At the end of the apprenticeship, you will take a journeyman exam to get your license.
I pass my aptitude test i assume cause i was brought in for an interview then received a letter saying i’ll be in a waiting pool lost for open slots, is that basically them saying to me i didnt get in!!???
You should have recieved written word of you passing or failing the aptitude test along with a date for an interview. As for the waiting pool, not sure what they mean by that. I think they may be saying that you have been accepted and are now waiting for a slot to open up for the next incoming class. I would suggest calling the local to find out what your status is.
I went through the application process in local 26 and also local 349 and both locals had the same process. I can't speak for every single local but I can say they're similar.
Just had my interview for the sound & communication IBEW 11, but I noticed that I’ve waited a month for my exam and interview when I was told 2-3 months for each. Does this mean anything? Also For my interview it went great Overall very satisfied. I noticed they were mostly explaining to me about the program and if I have reliable transportation and where do I see myself in 5 years, my hobbies, a weakness and strength along with my work experience & what to expect once I join and drug testing , really wasn’t asked questions like why I want the job opportunity and why should I get picked and what type of person I am... any feed back ? Thanks!!
It sounds like your interview went well. I have no way of knowing that for certain but it's what I get from your comment. Sometimes things roll quicker than expected and that's not a bad thing. They tell you 2-3 months in case there are delays. I hope they get back to you with an acceptance letter soon!
Union Minded I’m 45 little over wieght what’s my chances of getting trained for a job at the local 11 union in San Fernando ca.. you think I can make it
I'm hoping mine goes as quickly as your did, I applied 2 weeks ago and the lady said sometime in January for my test (so two more weeksish), but I have yet to hear back for a date.
Current HVAC/R apprentice but get offers from electrical companies sometimes. Am able to get electrical appren license i work with voltages up to 575V am ok at math but im 31 years old still have a couple years to finish HVACR apprenticeship..afterwards do you think it would still be worth it for me to make the jump at 33-34? Also my company is a mechanical and electrical contractor but I do service HVACR apprenticeship. Thanks for the advice
In 2006 when I applied I came in with 6 years of electrical experience and was accepted into the program in the 2007 class. Graduated in 2011. I was put to work immediately after I applied and have worked steady throughout my career.
If I want to join my local (26 for me), and already have my journeyman license and OSHA 10, what would they typically do in that situation? Do they pay the full journeyman wage or would they probably try to place me in the apprenticeship as a 3rd or 4th yr? Or just tell me to go kick rocks? 😂
Union Minded great. Thanks for the reply. I’m going to give it a go at some point soon here. I really believe in the training and safety that is offered. It’s usually way above what’s offered non-union from what I’ve seen.
I applied quite some time ago and just today received an email and text about a date and time for the aptitude test date, don’t want to steer you in the wrong direction just letting you know it can be a very timely process!
Thank you for the video! I sent an application and they recommended that people go to the Iprep study guide, which has really difficult algebra that mainly has advanced problems solving for X. Can you please tell me if the test is similar to these problems, or a little bit more basic algebra? If you have any advice it would be greatly appreciated thank you. Example 1: i. 2x - 4y = 12 ii. 3x - 2y = 10 Example 2: ½x = 2 − ¼y Which of the following statements is true for this formula? A. When the value of x is less than 4, y is negative. B. When the value of x is greater than 4, y is positive. C. When the value of y is less than -6, x is positive. D. When the value of y is greater than -6, x is positive. Example 3 Which of the graphs represents the following two linear equations? x + y = 3 x - y = 1 Then they show graphs for the answers Example 4: Simplify the following expression to its simplest form. Consider B = 5 and C = -1: (A3 + A)/A + (C + B)(B - C) - A2 25 A3 - A2 + 24 2A2 - 23 A + 24 Example 5: Consider the following formula: B = √(C - 2) Which of the following statements is true for this formula? A. If C is greater than 2, B can only be positive B. If C is less than 2, there are no solutions for B C. If B is negative, there are no solutions for C D. If C is less than 2, B can only be negative Example 6: Isolate the variable from the formula: T = 1/f f = w/2π T = __?__ A. 2π/w B. w/2π C. f/w D. f/2π
Do you know anything about the helmets to hardhats program? I’m active duty army and was wondering if It is worth my time? Also does my ASVAB score transfer over for the entrance exam?
I know that here in dc we do have a helmets to hardhats program and that we have many many members who are former military. I can't imagine you feeling like it's a waste of time. As far as the asvab score transfering, I dont think it does.
eric could you please elaborate more about the interview part i already past the test and i will have my interview in about 2 weeks please what questions i will be asked
You will be asked why you want to join? You'll be asked to give an example of a time you failed and what you took away from that failure? You'll be asked if you prefer to work alone or in a group? These are some that I remember from my interview all of those years ago.
@@unionminded7918 thanks i really appreciated , on the question what do you prefer to work alone or in a group which answer is the right one ?? or should i say both
Can't really say what is the right answer or what's the wrong answer. I can tell you what I said, I said both because it's TRUE for me. I can work alone and I can work in a group and either way I'm fine. But that's me. I answered all of their questions honestly. Didn't try to make myself into what I thought they wanted me to be. I hope that makes sense.
It's a free country but you will be tested prior to being accepted into the program and before starting any job. From application to interview can take weeks. Be patient but if it seems like it's been a while and you haven't heard anything, there is nothing wrong with a phone call to find out what your status is.
i took my interview a week ago and got ranked 2nd, and today got bumped down to 4th. how long should i be expecting to wait to get accepted? i know work is slow right now but i was told they still accept new apprentices even if work is slow. any info on this?
Union Minded ok cool, one more thing, how does one go about for vacation in the IBEW? I’ve seen some talk about a piece of their check that goes into their vacation fund and others just take unpaid time off? I just want to make sure vacations aren’t frowned upon.
@@invincible794 there is an old saying about taking time off. "Whatever you can afford." Basically save up for the time you want to take off. Give notice and have a good time. I have always given as much notice as possible.
I'm not sure how that works across locals. I would research which local is in the jurisdiction that you want to move to and contact their hall. They'll be able to guide you along.
Breathe. Slow inhale, slow exhale. Slow your heart rate down by controlling your breathing. Take your time when answering questions. Be thoughtful. Remember they started in your shoes and know how you feel. Most importantly, breathe.
My husband applied months ago and has not heard anything do you have any recommendations on how to email to look more interested and eager to work for IBEW
I always tell people, if it feels like it's been too long, call the hall and ask about your status. Squeaky wheels get the grease as they say. Hope this helps.
@@DavidSmith-hc2xu it set me back years. I was a third year apprentice in Miami, moved to NY and was not allowed in to finish my apprenticeship. When I finally moved to virginia I had to start from square 1. So it was really a set back and a half.
@@unionminded7918 Damn dawg thats a real hurt piece. But, thats good to know you were able to rebound from it. and the intel dump you provide is really helpful brother, thanks a bunch.
Hey I’m 18 and I’m just interested I know I need more To say for the interview why they should choose me but I’m not great at interviews I be speechless and try to talk a lot But all I know is that whatever it is imma be passionate about it and work hard that’s all I can say about me . Any tips ? This is one of my top options I have left
I would say that you should think about what you bring to the table. Desire is super important. Also though if you're able to pick up things quick that would be an asset. Make a list of things you think are positive attributes you have and remember it. That may help.
Couldn't say how all unions did, but at ibew26 because of our majority of work we were minimally affected. But there are ups and downs in any industry and unemployment us a possibility. So we typically save a rainy day fund. Tge reason we are able to do this is because of our higher wages and benefits. It behooves anyone to be in a union rather than not.
@@unionminded7918 thank you for taking out of the day to respond🙏 Do you have any online resources I can go too to help me on the math test and interview question? Thanks again🙏🙏
No, experience is not a requirement. I had zero experience when I started my career and that did not slow me down one bit. Go for it! A better life awaits!
