I had this done a month ago. I was prepared for the worst and deep down feared I wouldn’t be able to complete it. But it went well and I got through it. Here are my tips: first, I spent the weeks prior psyching myself up and believing I could do it. My son’s little league coach is a former Navy SEAL so I asked myself, “Would he be worried and anxious about this? Of course not.” So I channeled some of his courage to psyche myself up. Definitely make sure they numb your nose and throat good. Mine was numbed well. And when they put it in your nose and tell you to drink as they put it down your throat, don’t even think about it going down. Just concentrate on drinking the water and nothing else. Once it was down, I felt better because that was the part I was most worried about. From there, I felt no pain at all, only some discomfort in my throat where I could feel the tube. It felt like something just kind of sitting in my throat or, not to be gross, but it felt like snot or something that was kind of there in my throat. Although I could talk if I wanted to, I didn’t talk anymore than I had to. And shortly after the procedure started, I pulled out my phone and brought up a picture of my kids and just looked at it through most of the procedure, thinking “do it for them.” Finally, I did my best to just stay calm. Breathe, relax, know you are in the hands of a medical professional and that you will be fine. When it was done, I was incredibly proud of myself for having done it. For several days I felt so good knowing that I can do hard things, and that alone was worth it. Believe in yourself. Be strong. Relax. You’ve got this.

Just here to say I did this today and read all these comments beforehand and totally freaked myself out. It wasn’t bad at all, and if you have a fantastic nurse like I did you’ll be fine. People just come on here to share bad experiences but know there are plenty of good ones like mine. It’s uncomfortable and definitely not a fun feeling but focus on your breathing and bring someone to your appointment if you can for extra comfort! My nurse helped me stay calm and relaxed between swallows and I didn’t have to repeat any of them. And this is coming from someone who gets very anxious. You’ll do great!

My throat hurts like I swallowed a bit too much food. Most of my pain was my stomach which is highly unlikely to happen. They way my hernia is made a lot of pressure where the tube was and it was definitely awful but very bearable. I vomited a lot but I have reflux because of my hernia and the saline and the catheter was just a lot in my throat. It was all water and lidocaine though so it wasn’t gross just annoying. I’m still having pain and nausea after but this is also rare and not too difficult. I read these comments before my procedure, and now im coming back to leave my own comment after I had my procedure this morning. Im a 26yo female and was HORRIFIED beforehand. But I lived to tell the tale that it wasn’t that bad! The whole thing basically just feels like a really sore throat. The worst part for me was the taste of the numbing spray, and the tube being pulled out lol. Both made me slightly gag- but that was it. My nurse said it’s common for people to vomit during insertion, but I luckily didn’t experience any of that. The two biggest things that will get you through it is 1. your own mind, and 2. having an encouraging nurse. If I can do it then you can too!! Mind over matter. Sing a song in your head through the tough parts, squeeze the table, jiggle your foot, anything that will help. The entire procedure took only 20 minutes if you perform well and listen to the instructions. If you mentally push through then the faster it will be over! ❤

Just got this procedure done . It was not BAD at all . Just remember these points . 1. Breathe in , breathe out , breathe through your mouth as well . When the probe is in your throat , it will make you feel gag or choke, what do you do , breathe heavily through your nose and mouth . 3 if you have trouble holding your swallow, ask the nurse to give some water and hold it in your mouth . I followed these steps and didn’t cough or choke even once .

@PfoxMC
@PfoxMC 3 года назад
It was not as bad as many have been saying. The worst part for me was actually the numbing of my nose. I was injected with numbing agent that tasted so bad and did not go down well. I did not gag on it but it got me pretty close. Next, the doctor started to put the wire down my nose; It was not painful at all. It eventually reached the back of my throat, at this point I kind of freaked out, but quickly collected myself and was instructed to drink provided water to help the wire go down my esophagus. Once it is in place, you can feel the wire in the back of your throat. It really isnt bad, its almost like a bad sore throat feeling. After that, I swallowed water every 30 seconds. During these 5 minutes of swallowing water there was actually an older lady across the hall and she started to have a retching/gagging/coughing fit. It sounded like she was dying, lol, so the doctor working on my test actually left the room to tend to the other patient that was gasping for air. It really hit my morale but I tried to stay positive. She came back and we did one more test where I had to chug 5 swallows in a row. I actually struggled with this as I have trouble chugging so I choked a bit and had to let out a few burps. She said to just go as fast as I could and we did that test twice. After this, she took it out. I held my breath and she instructed me to blow out my nose. It came out in less than a second but it did trigger my gag reflex but I held back the gag. All in all, yes, it was not fun, but you can definitely get through it. I have history of emetophobia and I was very anxious during the test (to the point that my hands were tingling and I was shaking and... I left with a sweat stain between my butt cheeks, lol) but I was very far from vomiting or freaking out that there was a wire in my throat. My advice is to forget about it until you are there because there is little you can do to prepare for this. I know thats hard to do, especially because I was given this same advice and did not follow it but I wish I did. It will suck but it will be over in 10-15 minutes. Goodluck :P

i had this procedure done a week ago. it was actually both esophageal manometry and 24hr ph study and it wasn’t that bad as how others say it is. the person doing the procedure sprayed a local anesthetic to my throat and inside my right nose and told me to swallow. after that my throat felt numb to a point where swallowing felt a bit awkward. then he inserted the tube through my nose and then into my esophagus telling me to sip on water as he put it in deeper. during this procedure, i didn’t gag even once and it was not that bad except for the fact that swallowing was awkward. i could still breath totally fine through my nose. so the esophageal manometry was somewhat uncomfortable but i didn’t have a hard time through procedure. for the 24hr ph study, i didn’t feel like i was gagging or nauseous, i guess because the wire or tubing going in to the throat is quite thin. there was a sweet spot where the wire rested in my throat that made swallowing liquid and food feel normal but sometimes when the wire is kinda off the sweet spot it would feel like a sore throat when i swallow. it was annoying as hell because i couldn’t take a shower that day and the device had to be carried where ever i go. sleeping with it was difficult too for me, because of the sensation of something in my nose and in my throat even though it was a subtle feeling. overall it was totally bearable though. never threw up, never got nauseous and never gagged because of it. i guess the experience is different for each person.

Thanks for this. I'm going for both as well in a few weeks. My symptoms have been reflux, burping and a burning in my stomach especially when drinking hot liquids. Almost like fire. I've had endoscopies, all show as normal, with some inflammation from acid reflux but nothing concerning. I do have a hiatal hernia though the gastro md says its small/medium, he's not sure that's what's causing my discomfort. All of these nightmarish comments can really make someone not want to get this done, but I'm doing it regardless for some answers. You are right, not everyone has the same tolerance/experience and I'm praying I'm one of the lucky ones. Tolerance wise, I'm a strong person but this test still scares me.
@ct.k9480

in my case, based on the manometry test, it showed that my LES pressure was weak therefore reflux happens. Also for 24hr ph study, it showed 68 acid ph reflux episodes for total of 26 minutes, longest being 3.9 minutes while upright. So currently i’m making lifestyle changes mostly in my diet, to lose weight. I was told i also have a sliding type hiatal hernia but it’s a small one so losing weight might help to reduce the symptoms. I’m not sure if you made diet changes as well as elevating the head of your bed by 8-12 inches, but those seem to help my symptoms a lot. The head of my bed is elevated by around 15 inches.

I had it done today. No pain, didn't gag once. Had lidocaine in my nose, no throat spray. Nurse was amazing and has done it for 15 years. My advice is to relax, close your eyes, breath. Chin on your chest the whole time of insertion, keep drinking the water as they put it down. It helps! Once the test is ready. When you swallow, take a big gulp of the saline and spit, so you're not tempted to double swallow. I double swallowed once because I left saliva in my mouth and naturally did it. Now have in the 24hr one, have eaten. Got some reflux and am looking forward to putting it all behind me. I have read horror stories because negative experinces is what makes us run to tell about. I prolonged it because of those stories. But it wasn't as bad as I thought, uncomfortable yes. Feels weird having something in the back of your throat you can't "get rid of" by swallowing. I had the procedure done when I was misdiagnosed by a gastro-enterologist (not affiliated with Stanford) with early-onset acalasia 10y ago. The manometry was normal which indicated something else entirely: eosinophilic esophagitis. Since the correct diagnosis by a GE at Palo Alto Medical Center, the condition is easily controlled with OTC meds (Omeprazole and an occasional dose of fluticasone propionate orally). Subsequent allergy testing has still not determined the agent causing the allergic reaction. The manometry procedure was not pleasant. The gag reflex and irritation were tolerable but it is not something I'd care to repeat.

The initial stage was the worst for me; they almost weren't able to place the cateter down my esophageus. However, despite this, I was able to complete the procedure in the end. I would say it's possible that you are unlucky like me and it will be very unpleasant for you, but you can also be lucky and it can be completely alright for you. Either way, you can do it, it lasts only about 15 minutes and after that you will be alright and it will help the doctors determine what is up with you and what kind of therapy you need so it's definitely worth it :) Just try to believe you will be lucky and not stress about it. Stressing is definitely not gonna make it better. Good luck to anyone who needs to undergo this procedure, you'll be fine :)

I had this procedure done recently and it wasn't as bad as I read on some of the comments but everyone is NOT the same. I got lucky but it def depends on your ability to control your breathing and instructions from the nurse. To all the people who did have a hard time you are definitely brave I applaud you! I had an awesome nurse and they did numb my nose but that didn't help at all.

im glad it went well for you :)I have a question: did you ever have a test done where the doctor put a tube up your nose and down your throat to check your vocal cords or something? I had this done many years ago. It didn't go very well. The insertion in nose is unpleasant but I made it through that. Not painful but incredibly uncomfortable. I could not stop gagging and vomited several times. My nurses seemed surprised by this and a bit irritated. They still went through the process but as it turned out they didn't even get any good readings because I could not swallow and not swallow on command. My Doctor did say that the fact I had so much trouble was a definite indication of a problem with my esophagus. I was ultimately diagnosed with achalasia and ended up having Heller Myotomy surgery to correct it.

My mom's gastroenterlogist recommended I look into this test since I'm having trouble swallowing liquids especially, foods it depends if it's dry I'll have more difficulty. But have had an endoscopy, everything was "fine" physically...did a barium swallow, once I swallow nothing blocking and everything again "fine" physically yet I sometimes feel some minor discomfort when I swallow like I can feel it in my upper chest area like if I swallow air with liquids, have had bad anxiety since 2020 while I've had it for 16 years I've never had issues swallowing. Had lots of panic and anxiety attacks in 2020 with the madness going on, 2021 I calmed down in Feb but then March of 2021 I started having this sudden issue of swallowing started in my sleep this dry feeling and trouble swallowing like I was choking on my own swallow, that passed onto food and drinking. The dumb doctors just think it's "anxiety and in my head" yet funny I didn't know physical feelings in my throat are "in my head" My regular doctor wants me to see a neurologist next....but I know they're just going to say the same shit "it's in my head" With food it got better near to normal but with liquids I have to angle myself and almost thinking about it before I swallow, if I try clearing my mind and swallowing fast like I used to it gets caught, I also lost my ability to take a few consecutive swallows like when you're super thirsty. I can only swallow once at a time and take seconds between them...nobody knows what the problem is and this test looks terrifying, for one I can't swallow straight up much less at an angle like this not going to happen, two everyone in the comments are saying this is hell or very uncomfortable. Not very reassuring...so I pretty much suffer every day for the past 2 years....I guess any shot at a normal life went out the window for me.........

I just have to say that I can GUARANTEE that the medical personnel who put this video together have never actually had this procedure. It was a nightmare, and I could not complete it. (And I am no delicate flower.) The medical community needs to stop saying things like "mild discomfort" and expect patients to just endure what, for many, is simply unendurable. Doctors need to find an alternative to this; if they tried it themselves, they would! (And people saying "oh, it's not so bad!" Obviously, some people are able to tolerate it better -one's reaction to it is clearly dictated by individual physical characteristics, including how sensitive one's gag reflex is...that's not anything a person can control for!)

They want you to sip to help pass through for the tube. I got sick 3 times they tried it. My nose was constantly bleeding. On some videos I seen they spray your nose and your to num they didn't do anything but liquid gel up my nose only. They couldn't finish the procedure so now I have appointment for partial sedation. Once it reaches the valve to get inside your stomach. the worst is over. I have type I achalasia and I can't even count the amount of times I gagged and regurgitated mucus and saliva. I failed this test twice with an impatient specialist, but then I ended up passing the third time due to a kind woman making me feel totally comfortable and relaxed throughout.
