With so much advancement in technology and nanosizing of so many diagnostic devices - I am surprised women are still put through such uncomfortable probing devices - why can’t such devices be smaller and non-invasive
Your so right, I wish it was smaller, so women can at least fell comfortable with out any pain. I'm getting this done in a few hours and I'm so so scared. I'm small down there and I don't know if it will even enter me.
I've had this done and I hate how everyone keeps saying it doesn't hurt, it's so misleading and invalidating. For many people it can really hurt because every women has a different body, also everyone will be experiencing different level's of anxiety. When I went it was okay for the first 5 seconds and then I felt intense pressure that was very painful, i started getting anxious and the pain kept getting worse. The best way I can describe it is someone digging their nail into you and slowly they push harder and harder and tell it's super painful, but this is inside you. . My mistake is that I didn't communicate with my doctor and tell it became unbearable and I burst out crying, I was very anxious and unprepared on top of this as I was told I was only going in for an ultrasound on my stomach. My advice is to communicate with your doctor, tell them as soon as you feel any discomfort and take some painkillers or anti anxiety remedies beforehand just in case.
Expect to feel violated. I had the internal one which felt like a violation and the trans abdominal one which felt as extremely unpleasant because I had to pee very badly and nearly peed all over the table. It all seems very primitive. Why not a cat scan??
Me too. i can't even get a small sized tampon inside my area. I use pads during my periods. i was recommended by my gynecologist for a transvaginal. i told her "no". I have only had one pap smear in my life and that was under anesthesia and I paid for it out of my pocket to have it this way because insurance wouldn't pay for it. I don't care. I am 45 years old. I have been through enough health issues as it is since I was born. I have spasticity in my legs, a mild form of cerebral palsy, i have been through3 leg operations and painful physical therapy just to learn how to sit straight, stand straight and walk straight, I am also a hydrocephalus patient and I have been through 3 brain surgeries to put vpshunts(ventricular peritoneal) shunt in my head to properly drain the cerebral spinal fluid from my head to my abdomen. The way I look at it is, you can live without a uterus, and ovaries, and fallopian tubes, or your vagina, but if something goes wrong with your lungs, your heart, your kidneys, your liver, your brain, you can't live. There IS no you.
@@pallavisreetambraparni6995 but doing a transvaginal ultrasound can detect PCOS which has negative consequences on your cardiovascular and metabolic systems as well as your kidneys. It's all interconnected. Have you tried a pelvic ultrasound?
I had this done yesterday and I didn’t feel a thing. I was so worked up as my last smear was painful. So don’t fear it could save your life. Get it done 👍
I'm getting olmine done in April and I am already getting anxious and having anxiety about it because I am so tiny around that area I passed out when I first had my first pap smear
Just wanted to give my experience here quickly. The most uncomfortable part by far was having to have a full bladder, but the staff did say I could use the washroom beforehand since I was in obvious discomfort and I felt way better after letting a bit out. The ultrasound felt totally fine and I was very relaxed through it, the staff were friendly and that made the experience way less scary than I thought. The pelvix exam was a little uncomfortable but it only took a few minutes before it was all over. Getting my covid shots and blood tests were both worse, tbh. Hopefully this can be a bit reassuring to others who need these tests.
@@Lexandra2 Yes you can! Even if you are in a lot of discomfort it shouldn't take longer than 10 minutes or so. For me, if I would have known how it would go I wouldn't have been nervous at all. Good luck 🍀
@@Lexandra2 How long do you need to hold your full bladder during the test (before they will let you use washroom to pee)? I was told to drink a liter of water. I hope I can hold it that long.
Have to go in the morning. These vids really help to show what to expect. I wondered why the full bladder, now I know. Cts have shown my uterus cavity is enlarged and masses on my kidney and liver. Urologist visit next week. Hope everything comes out ok for all of us here.

@@peachlipstick I'm sorry I'm just seeing this. I had a small cancer cell in my kidney but was frozen dead and hasn't returned. Almost 2 years ago I had severe sepsis and lost my left arm but I am doing great now. Thank you for asking
Please just straight up tell people it might hurt. Everyone's body is different. My mom told me she didn't feel a thing when she had to have them, but when I went in it felt like I was gonna tear open down there. Spoke to friends and most of them told me that yeah, any kind of pelvic exam hurts to varying degrees. So yeah. Please just be aware that it more than likely will hurt.
Was fine for me. Chatted about Xmas with nice nurse whilst being probed by a silent man. I felt a bit like my privates were not as private anymore and was glad when my bits were exactly the same as before afterwards. I was lucky these results are normal.
just got mine done yesterday. the procedure was quick and painless, just a slight bit uncomfortable for obvious reasons but other than that, completely pain free.
I actually got something done , a lot girls have misleading information going on . The truth if it’s your first time , Or depending if will hurt , it does hurt if you get it the first time because they are stretching in your skin especially if you are Virgin . It will hurt to if you are getting them done . To survive the pain and what helped me was that I clenched my teeth and my muscles too . Clenching your fist , it helped with pain . It works . Pain is still there . Also , after they remove what they put inside , they it stop hurting it can hurt to if have smaller virginal area .
I just went today for my ultrasounds. Going in, I was nervous. But the Dr was really good, gentle, and reassuring. Checking if I was OK during the procedure. The Abdominal Ultrasound took less time than the Transvaginal one. About 2 minutes or less, the Transvaginal about 5 minutes or so. The only thing I felt, was the warmth of the gel she used to rub my abdomen. And slightly felt the scanning tool she used going into my Vagina, after that, I didn't feel anything. I felt slightly more during my Pep Smear a few yrs ago, but that wasn't painful either. It wasn't at all as bad as I thought it would be! Even having to hold in the 40 Oz of Water wasn't as bad. I didn't feel any pain at all, during both ultrasounds. Initially my Dr wanted me to get this procedure done, because of heavy, painful menstrual cycles. I would much rather have this procedure done, than having my period! Lol. Hopefully everything comes out good.🤞 I'll find out in 10 days.
I’m just going to ask my ultrasound tech to talk me through it. That worked really well when I got my pap done, recently. I think she was newer at it and was having a little trouble so I just told her that if she just keeps on talking to me and telling me what she’s doing as she’s doing it, I’ll stay more relaxed and it’ll be far better for both of us. She was very happy with how it all worked out and so was I. She apologized for it taking a bit longer than usual and I told her that was fine and I’d rather the time needed, be taken. The one I had done several years before that, was done very quickly and aggressively by a man and he didn’t speak to me at all and I screamed in pain. I had pain down there for a whole week afterward. I will never have a pap done by a man, ever again. Lesson learned.
That's horrible! My gynecologist is a man and he's just wonderful. He talks me through everything no matter how long I've been seeing him. I wish you hadn't had that bad experience 😢
@@laurieb3703 Same. I’ve had other pelvic exams done by male doctors, for second opinions, the two times I was induced to have two of my babes and those were also quite uncomfortable. A second opinion is always required in order for an induction approval, it’s just the standard routine practice, it wasn’t done by my request. Oh! Also, I got the transvaginal scan done and it was completely painless. Super easy.
I'm so sorry that happened☹️ I don't understand why men will go into these fields if they aren't going to be gentle. Imagine if they had to have something the size of the ultrasound wand shoved up their ass. The world would never hear the end of it😒
@@haj09 Turns out I only had to do the stomach scan part. Did not even need to change clothes. It was absolutely fine. PRO-TIP: go to your appointment early and pray to god they're not running behind because my bladder was so full and the "discomfort" was SO REAL. Good luck :)
I was terrified to have one done at first! It was uncomfortable for obvious reasons But it DID NOT hurt! Get it done ladies! It could save your life!❤️
Guys don’t worry theirs 2 types abdominal or vaginal. If your not mating then they’ll probably only do the abdominal. My doctor only circled abdominal cause I’m to young to have it in my internal 😳
Queensland, Australia - I had mine two days ago... Was uncomfortable but didn’t hurt. It took a total of 15mins. *You don’t have to fast, but I had to empty my bladder an hour prior and then drink 1L of water and hold. *You can also request another female be present (even if it’s a female doing the procedure). *If you’re a virgin, the form said you have a consultation prior to going into the exam. *I got mine done on a Friday and was told the results would be available Monday lunchtime.
I won’t sugar coat it for anyone. It might hurt for you. It’s different for everyone. I’m twenty and just recently had this done. I seen my PCP a few months ago. And never seen an OBGYN before. But I’ve had to have so many tests done. I have pelvic organ prolapse and ovarian cancer recently diagnosed. (I’ve also never been sexually active so that could explain partly why I was in so much pain. But seriously get what you need to get done! It may be saving your life ❤
I just went for my first pregnancy ultrasound today hoping to see and get pictures of a hoping pregnancy, but the technician didn’t even let me see or hear if there was a heart beat or anything, made me feel very worried and my doctors office was closed today because of a holiday ugh now I have to wait till tomorrow to hear back, I don’t know why but she made me feel very unsure about everything kinda worried, I have pcos too and I just want everything to go well and have a healthy baby
So when i was younger before my cycle or even afterwards, i haven't been asked to do this? Why do yall have to get pelvic exams at such a young age. I was around 21 when i first got mine. I felt uncomfortable but it didnt hurt.
Everyone body is different I have to get another transvaginal ultrasound tomorrow it wasn’t painful for me. The best advice is to not tense or clench vaginal muscles. Make sure they use enough lubrication and it should slide right in. It was quick too. This is way more comfortable than a Pap smear
I just had one done on Wednesday because I’m pregnant and have fibroids. So she did the pelvic ultrasound to get a better look at my cervix and when I tell you it hurt like hell I wanted to cry. I’m still in pain from having it done and none of the pain medication I is helping. I can’t sneeze, cough or laugh due to the pain.
@@mitsuhamiyamizu101nope they are actually not allowed to do on virgins since we never had a d in there so how they gon put that in lmao it will hurt like hell
This does hurt badly.. u must be lucky if it doesn’t hurt. worst part I got it done during my cycle and cramps are worse. I almost fainted after it was finished.
i have to get one in like a week and it’s only trans abdominal but i’m still nervous, it’s to see why i don’t have my period yet even tho i’m 15 almost 16
It won't be so intrusive unlike the transvaginal... You would be just exposing your tummy and gel would be used so it might be cold. While I have to get the more invasive procedure, I am also nervous.
Melanie Ware I’m in the exact same situation, I’m 16 and haven’t gotten it. Im thinking of not giving consent to the second part because I’m just too scared
Bailey_1243 did they say you had to do the second part? not that you asked but i just got my period last month, finally. the transabdominal isn’t that bad, the worst part is having to hold your pee for that long, they told me to drink 3 bottles of water and i only drank 1 and a half and still almost peed myself, then turns out they didn’t even need my bladder to be full
Melanie Ware Aw I’m so happy for you! I just got sent a letter today saying I need to do a pelvic ultrasound on the 22nd of June. For some reason they crossed out the section that says I will need a full bladder. I’ve done an ultrasound before, but it was only the gel on my stomach. This letter got sent with a paper saying what a pelvic ultrasound is and it’s talking about getting a transducer inserted after seeing the window to the uterus. I’d be lying if I said I haven’t cried like 8 times after getting this letter. It was bad enough having two nurses look at it a couple months ago, now they want to insert something. I’m just way too uncomfortable for that. I’m a private person. I know my mum would be mad though If I didn’t agree to letting them do that
I have PCOS and I remember how I felt when the doctor told me it would be hard for me to conceive I now have 4 children very successful pregnancies. God blessed me! with use of herbs
I'm getting this done in two days to find out why my cramps have gotten so bad lately. If anyone has any questions about the process afterwards, feel free to ask!
So I had this done and was diagnosed with adenomyosis. Which sucks. But now I know why I've been in so much pain. The procedure hurt but that's most likely because of my condition.
@@nicoledburns82 It sounds like ultimately a hysterectomy. Currently, I'm on birth control as a means of controlling my cycle and try to prevent the intense cramping. But apparently I have a more mild case currently.
@@RedBizou well good luck to you. I told my ob about my insane bloating and cramps and pressure in my low abdomen and he brushed me off until he did the internal exam and said my uterus is measuring 12 to 14 weeks so tomorrow is the ultrasound and sounds more like I have adenomyosis than fibroids so we will see.
I have to get both types for suspected PCOS. My appointment is in 4 days and I was told to drink 40 ounces of water 1 hour before my appointment. Is that right? The facility is 20 mins away from my house and I'm afraid I'm going to wee on myself lol. I went to my gyno today and she said I have a lot of the symptoms of PCOS along with irregular periods. I did blood work, urine, and the ultrasound will be done on Tuesday. I told her I was not sexually active yet she still wants me to do both the abdominal and transvaginal ultrasound. I'm kinda nervous because I am very tight down there. So tight that for my pap smear today, they had to find the smallest speculum for me and it still hurt getting it done. I was shaking and it was my 2nd time. Not looking forward to getting this done. I'm nervous 😓
@@krissssssss4422 It was not bad. I had to wait an extra 15 mins past my appointment so I was a bit irritated because you have to hold in your wee for the first half of the ultrasound. The sonographer was pressing hard on my abdominal area so it was a bit painful but I asked her to be gentle. I still don't know the results yet and I did it on April 12th. It takes a while apparently but this is my first ultrasound. Don't worry too much. You'll be fine 🙂

Hi guys! Im back from my appointment! Yay! When I went today the Ultrasound technician lady told me that the pelvic ultrasound has 2 parts: - abdominal - vaginal BUT if you havent been sexually active (like ever aka virgin) then they only do the abdominal one and not the vaginal one. So woohoo! Oh ps this is for Kaiser though idk about other places
Phew! So glad to know they only do the abdominal one if you're a virgin. I have to get mine done soon and was worried about the pain for the vaginal one. It's a relief to know they bypass it though. 😌
Omg thank you. I’m only young and definitely not sexually active. I’m getting tested for PCOS and I was so worried that I was having something put up me. Like it’s almost midnight and I’m crying. Thank god it’s only the stomach
@@Kayleigh67Can you please tell me how it went? Because I’m about to get an ultrasound soon and I’m too scared. Did they just do the abdominal ultrasound?
I have PCOS and I remember how l felt when the doctor toid me it would be hard for me to conceive I now have 4 children very successful pregnancies God blessed me with use of herbs!
It hurts I don’t know what lies this lady is telling us. I just had one done and had to clench my fists, and held my breath, I know I was making faces like I’m uncomfortable…and they don’t even tell you any of that. You have the right to ask for pain numbing or relief so you don’t have to go through the discomfort.
How was it? I may have to get one some time in the future to check for PCOS and I’m freaking out. I’m 18 and never been to an obgyn and never had to have that part exposed for anyone. It all sounds extremely vulnerable and extremely violating and I’m terrified if I have to do it
Have any overweight women had this done and can you please give some feedback? I am worried about the pain having extra belly fat as I don’t know if they will need to dig more. Sorry for TMI but any feedback would be highly appreciated!
The lady I saw was absolutely awful to me didn’t talk to me or anything and really hurt me, I cried so much when I left because she did not comfort me at all. She was nasty if she introduced herself I’d have complained which I never do. I wish that I had somebody as kind as the lady in this. Every time I offered the lady some information I think she’d find useful she just said “ ok” so rudely and blunt. I did not have a pleasant experience and I genuinely hope I don’t have to get it again or at least not by that practitioner. She was rude and didn’t speak to me once and left me feeling very unsettled... I could feel myself passing out when she was doing the ultrasound she kept pressing on my pelvic bone with it, and I didn’t even get the internal scan. She was very rough and very ill mannered...
@@DMoni2992 Thank you, me too, i was only 19 as well so I wasn’t even sure what to expect and it was a horrible experience for me. Funnily enough , my cousin who was going for an ultra sound as she was pregnant was meant to have an appointment at the same place I went to ( which was a local walk in centre which also had a doctors surgery in ) a week before her appointment they cancelled her appointment because “ the radiographer no longer works there “ 🤔

You would think with her being a woman too that she would show a little more compassion and try to put my mind at rest as I told her I was very nervous... but she didn’t. It was awful.
