So you submitted applications and now you're getting interview invitations? First, congrats (because you're awesome and I KNOW you got interviews)! Second, relax!
This is the first video of a 3-part series on what to expect from the different types of interviews you may have to do for the programs you applied to. These may be common knowledge already, who knows, but hopefully they help!

How do you advise answering the question about what other schools did you applied for?

This was incredibly helpful (and supportive!) Thank you for making this!! I had a question about the other programs I applied to and how I’d choose if I get multiple acceptance letters. I’m confused about what kind of answer they’d be seeking. Are there responses that I should definitely not say? (E.g. how much funding I’ll get sounds dicey?)
@jojodouglas
@jojodouglas Год назад
Thank you for watching! ☺️ As far as answering that question in particular, it can get a little tricky. Personally, I’d probably say something along the lines of acknowledging how these interviews are about both the program and me getting a feel for each other and how well we fit together. So I’d choose based on which program felt like the best fit for me and my anticipated career path. I’d probably also throw in something positive about their program specifically that makes them stand out in my decision-making process to convey the sense that I’m likely to choose them should they offer me acceptance Lol Like I said in the video, I’ve never been asked this question, so I have no way of knowing how well that response would actually go, but to me it feels the most neutral but still honest. I’d definitely steer clear of mentioning specific things you’re considering like funding. If you end up getting multiple offers and the funding is a stuck point for you, you can always bargain if you have the leverage

@@jojodouglas Thank you for the comprehensive answer! I just had my interview, and it all went fine. I got lucky that they didn’t ask tricky questions like that haha. Again, thank you for making this video and helping all of us out!

Thank you so much for this helpful video!! Am interviewing tomorrow and am nervous! What do you do if the faculty interviews are with people you did not apply to work with lol
@jojodouglas
@jojodouglas 6 месяцев назад
I’m glad you found the video helpful! If you’re not being interviewed by the faculty you’re applying to work with, chances are you will still be asked similar questions, including how you think your research interests/career goals align with the program. Inherent in this question is “what professor do you want to work with and why?” Or you may more explicitly be asked why you want to work with the professor you’re applying to work under. So just be sure to have that answer prepared. Good luck!! 💛

What if I’m only applying to one school because its the only one in my area? Is that a bad thing ?
@jojodouglas
@jojodouglas Год назад
Hi! It’s not at all a “bad thing.” How many schools you decide to apply to is very much dependent on what you can and can’t do. While it’s usually a good idea to apply to multiple schools, that’s not always possible depending on someone’s physical, financial, or other circumstances. If you have the means and are willing, I would recommend considering programs out of your area, but it’s not at all a necessity. Just be sure that you’re prepared for either outcome.

How long did it usually take to hear back from the programs you interviewed with ?

It varied a bit, but it was about a month for each, maybe a few days over

Question PhD can be called clinical psychologist? Or psyD can be called clinical psychologist? Because PhD is more focused on research and PsyD more on clinical. So I was confused as to why I’ve seen some doctors that graduated with a PhD referred themselves to clinical psychologist.
@jojodouglas
@jojodouglas Год назад
Hi there! Both a PhD and PsyD in clinical psychology grant you the title of Clinical Psychologist, because both allow you to do clinical work as long as you are licensed. Like you mentioned, the only difference really between the two is the emphasis that’s placed on research, which is why we often see more Dr’s with PhDs with careers in academia as opposed to those with PsyDs. Hope that answered your question!
@raneejones8531
@raneejones8531 Год назад
Thank you hun. I am in my masters of science in clinical mental health counseling program. I am still deciding between PhD and PsyD . PsyD is short but leaves you with more debt than a PhD.
@raneejones8531
@raneejones8531 Год назад
Another question what do you think of those online + in person universities that are offering 2-3 years PhD/PsyD programs ?
@raneejones8531
@raneejones8531 Год назад
Rather than the traditional 5-6 or 4-7 years?
@jojodouglas
@jojodouglas Год назад
@@raneejones8531 yea there’s definitely a LOT to consider when choosing between PhD and PsyD. Tbh I didn’t even know online doctoral programs for psychology existed 😳 if I had to guess though, they probably aren’t APA accredited, especially if they’re claiming to be clinical psychology degrees or any other psych degree that requires clinical training. It just wouldn’t make sense. My bet is they’re probably money-factories and not legit at all, which is sad

Can studying psychology make you a better filmmaker or an better author?
@jojodouglas
@jojodouglas 2 года назад
I can't answer this definitively since I'm neither a filmmaker nor an author, but I would think it would depend on what you're trying to achieve with those two mediums and what kind of stories you're trying to tell. If studying psychology in some capacity aligns with those goals, then I don't see why not
