This episode, the panel looks at Germany’s migration diplomacy and the country’s new agreements with Uzbekistan and Kenya. The goal of these bilateral agreements is to reduce irregular migration and facilitate labor mobility. The speakers assess the feasibility of these objectives and the opportunities and challenges they present for Germany and its partner countries. We also discuss the potential of these deals to jointly manage migration and help regularize it, and how they might not only reshape Germany’s relationships with Uzbekistan and Kenya but also impact Germany’s global standing.
Speakers:
Peter Schmidt, Head of Office, Special Commissioner for Migration Agreements, Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community
Paddy Siyanga Knudsen, Development Economist, African Non-State Actors Platform
Svenja Niederfranke, Research Fellow, Center for Migration, DGAP
Chair:
Sophie Meiners, Research Fellow, Center for Migration, DGAP
