Part of the oil burning in these Hondas is that they are over 20 years old and most of them never had the valve stem seals replaced. Worn valve seals are notorius for burning oil on these engines. It’s a big job and very time consuming.

not only the valve stem seals but also the piston rings burn up after time, you can order rebuild kits that include both items

@@bb6.v a ton of fun. 1997 an SH prelude was especially pretty rad. Felt like a lot of power then :). Honda service department told me it would be normal to see 1 litre of oil max used per month on any VTEC Honda but, for me I’ve owned many and never been the case.

2000 SH. Manual trans. Don't know if every 5th gen Prelude burns oil, that's all I hear. Mines does not burn any oil(85,000 mi), but has rear seal leak. Only drops of oil, do not have to add any oil between oil changes. But every Prelude I've looked at has an oil leak. Keep your Prelude n enjoy, auto or not(cheap now may be in the years will become a CLASSIC!)
@bb6.v
@bb6.v Год назад
I agree that not every prelude burns oil like everyone thinks. I think it applies to people who have worked on their h22 engine good in general for leaks and upgrade the parts or even engine swapped it themselves. but for most ludes im going to say it does especially hitting Vtec is when 🙏 YES keep your lude it’s already classic to me.

Visually inspect the engine bay to see if everything is working and all parts are intact and also try to test drive the car try to push the car alittle like do a small pull to see how it reacts and also check while running parked if the car has leaks under the car also that’s a fair price for a prelude but the mileage is high but still can be reliable and running great for a long time! I’m at 220k currently on mine!

I'm thinking of buying a 01 one really well kept aesthetically but I have no idea if the 2.0i 130-ish hp engine is good/reliable and is it slow af, I don't even know if it has vtec, anyone here to offer some insight? Nice video btw, heard the same things about the oil but I've heard that the automatic eats itself up and doesn't even last 100k Idk if that's true but I'm looking at a manual anyway... There's literally 1 honda prelude 5th gen on sale right now in my whole country xD
@bb6.v
@bb6.v Год назад
Hey prelude squad thank you for commenting! I’m sure the 2.0i is reliable/ good but even though it doesn’t have vtec it still is a prelude, I say if that’s the only one you can find and can’t find a dohc vtec prelude 5th gen then get the non vtec one and use it if you ever want vtec you can just import or swap the motor. Thank you for watching agreed on what you said about the oil eating thing as well it just can be any old part. But yes definitely go with a manual boss and that’s insane to hear there’s only one in your country !

I have the exact car. 2.0i. Not sluggish at all. Pretty snappy and quick. Doesn't have Vtec, but still fast. The 2 owners before me maintained it decently, the thing is 23 years old and feels amazingly tight and precise in every way. If it has a nice affordable price, please don't pass it up, you will love it. I have a manual. If the one on sale is Automatic, all i can say is that I only heard the worst about it, as with every honda automatic transmission. Anyway, go try out the car, if it is in good shape you are gonna fall in love and take it is still 2.0, it still has a low center of gravity, sporty suspension, stays flat in the corners and has decent accelaration(unless you're used to driving extremely powerful cars)
