What has your experience been with strabismus surgery?

my son was not born with a squint he was absolutely healthy fine no vision problems , but when he turned 2.5yrs one fine day out of the blue his eye just turned squint, we were so gutted , we went to many doctors and finally corrected it with a surgery a bit of squint still remains without the specs but with specs his eyes are straight, the doctor said when he turns 18 we can do a laser to correct the number and that in turn will correct the squint without specs. my question is can u tell how can a kid out of the blue get a squint, one doctor went to the extent saying he was born with it , i felt like slapping him coz were we blind for 2 years that we couldnt see the squint?

I had eye surgery when I was 17 years old because I used to suffer from lazy eye. My doctor sent me to the best Children's Hospital in the country for me to fix it. I was terrified, but the surgeon and the team handled the surgery like pros. I remember after the surgery, I would get double vision. I'm starting to ramble, but all you said in the video is true. And if anyone is going to have eye surgery, you'll be okay and take it easy during your healing 🤗

Do you have a primary doctor? They should be able to refer you somewhere. If not, do a google search for "psychiatrists near me" or contact any mental health clinic. PLEASE reach out to a professional for help until you get the help you need. DO NOT give up!!! Have you met with an eye surgeon about having this surgery? I will know Monday when I am having it done! I do have double vision and migraines, etc. due to strabismus, however in the past year my eye drifting has gotten noticeably worse because my friends and family are pointing it out to me and that is why I called and made an appointment with an eye doctor who referred me to a surgeon. So I totally understand how you feel about your confidence, you're not alone!! I actually broke down and cried when the eye doctor told me she didn't think I would be able to get surgery since my vision was getting worse, lol! Embarrassing, but I guess she felt bad for me since she decided to send me to surgeon anyways just to see what they said, so good thing I did get emotional during my eye exam! 🙃 Good luck! I have two children with nystagmus and one with strabismus too. The child with only nystagmus underwent a very successful strabismus surgery to correct it and the results were miraculous. The one with both is set to undergo strabismus surgery on both eyes in a few days and I'm a nervous wreck. But it's absolutely necessary. He's the most brilliant child I've ever met, and not to sound like a narcissist but I was a top 1% gifted student myself. This child is so far beyond where I was at his age in raw intelligence it's scary. But he's struggling in school because he can't see well enough to keep up despite some accomodations. Even having been through this with another child, I'm a nervous wreck about this. Thank you for making this video. It has done quite a lot to ease my nerves.

My toddler is going in to have both eyes adjusted tomorrow. I’ve been trying to not freak out about it. The anesthesia is my biggest concern. But also the post op care and infection prevention is another thing that I have really struggled with. He’s 2 1/2. His left eye has been almost completely pointed outward and up. His right eye floats up and in. Even though the surgery is minimal, being a health care professional, I see danger around every corner. I honestly didn't even want to see surgery pics but wanted to know what to expect. I love my surgeon, she is so caring and very experienced so I know I'm in good hands. I was told about ten years ago I couldn't have the procedure done because I would have double vision, but the doctor was actually frustrated during my exam because I have double strabismus and I have learned to control my eyes to an extent. So my current doctor would have to tell me which eye to relax when doing the exam and measurements because my eyes would keep switching. The wandering eyes just affect my appearance but I can see perfectly fine, no double vision. I don’t wanna have to go to multiple surgeries but I might have to.

I was born with congenital cataracts so have had several other issues arise, one being hypertropia and exotropia! Tomorrow is my 29th surgery all together but I must say it is a pretty painful surgery for me. It probably doesn’t help that there’s so much scar tissue, but it’s definitely more than a discomfort… I never understood when surgeons or doctors who have never had something done can tell you how much pain you are in. I always get opioid pain medication because it’s the only thing that helps unfortunately.

Hello Dr. This video is really helpful. I'm a parent of 5-year-old kid and my daughter has exotropia (right eye). Her eyes and vision were perfectly normal at birth and only at her age of 2 we noticed her right eye squinting. Her squint is not constant and occurs occasionally when she's tired and feeling sick or sleepy. After an year of eye-patching exercise, now her paediatric ophthalmologist suggested to undergo surgery in both eyes. I would like to get your opinion on this.

I was born with strabismus. Had my first surgery when I got my own insurance at 18. It wasn't enough to do the one weaker right eye (which is usually the one that turns in) only so I had to go back for a second op on the dominant eye. The results were ok. A noticeable difference and I didn't need glasses at the time. 20 years passed and I went back to have strabismus surgery in ATL about 5 months ago at 39yo. Haven't noticed any change, especially with glasses off. I insisted on adjustable sutures after reading so many positive experiences but was told they don't help and wouldn't be performed. After my final post-op (3 months), the doctor was happy with the results of operating on just the weaker eye. Should I try someone else? It's wasn't cheap, even with good insurance. There's not a lot of options where I live and even Atlanta is 2.5 hours drive each way. Maybe my brain is too stubborn. Maybe I have no recourse. My surgeon also had nothing good to say about vision therapy. I don't know what to do. Kind of hopeless at this point. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

@GiddyBrat89

Good morning. Thank you for this video and being welcoming to questions. I'm 33 years old and have lived with strabismus since as young as 11 months (they wander in all the ways. Now, as he stayed "your eyes move like Mexican jumping beans while still arguing with one another about where to point"). Also, its confirmed that I do live with nystagmus of both eyes that does occassionaly result in various types seizures and extreme migraines. Until recently, doctors consistently told me surgery was not necasary and would not prescribe prism lenses. That the surgery was far.too likely to do more harm than good. They did, however, prescribe for astigmatism, one eye being near and the other being far sighted. As well as serious sensitivity to light. Unfortunately, that has changed. About 2 weeks ago, I was referred to a specialist for a more in depth eye exam to see of surgery is now necasary, and was given a prescription with all of the above things as well as prism. I've sense come to the conclusion to hold off on the self pay expense of the original prescription until I can compare it with the specialists findings. (I've carried on without glasses for 2 years. So, I figure another 2 months, saving me about $400, should be fine. All of that rambling and introduction being finished 🤣 I would like to ask your expert opinion on how much youd suspect the doctors may need to do for the surgery. As well as what you believe (or have experienced) will be an estimated success rate? One of the reasons they always told me that they wouldnt refer me for surgery is because all the doctors I've seen have suspected that I have a higher risk of either or both of them being stuck. I appologize for the long comment, the ramblings, and for any unnecessary information. Needless to say; I'm more than worried about what may come and what this may mean from here going forward.

If you're reading this my question is should i go back, will be a totally different doctor for sure, and try again? Yearly, i have yo spend much for a special lens which is a bit pricey. Do you think this case will be cured with non invasive options or surgery is really required? Reading the comments about post op, the discomfort triggers my anxiety.

Hi, I am quite on in years. I’m at a prism of 13 BO for Strabismus and it slowly continues to get worse. My right eye is inward and down. The left eye is OK. I have high myopia. Probably 12 diopters of correctness. My eyes are egg-shaped. The retinas are stretched thin. I’m at a high risk because of the above and because I have had a number of previous eye surgeries. I have had surgery for a detached retina in the left eye and laser for three retinal tears in the right eye. I have had cataract surgery on both eyes, laser for secondary cataract in the right eye; a macular cyst on the left eye; surgery for a retina wrinkle in the left eye. My question is, given all of this, should I have the surgery for Strabisimus on my right eye? I hate the double vision and eye contact with others is difficult. Do you have a recommendation? Thank you.
