Double vision can truly make your life miserable! From trying to complete simple tasks or seeing the board, life can be quite difficult if double vision is the norm for you. In today's video, Dr. Valerie Lam teaches us 3 easy vision therapy exercises to help with your double vision!
Vision Therapy is a custom program of exercises to strengthen the eyes and brain to treat many vision problems and learning issues. Vision therapy is done under the guidance of an optometrist and with one on one coaching of a vision therapist. Here is an example of an exercise we use with our patients. I had practice this for the first time. So I was practice during during day. At first I was getting a slight headache just trying to focus on the back finger but I eventually got it. Two weeks After my thyroidectomy surgery I started seeing double. I did a mri and It came out normal

I just learned ive been dealing with divergence insufficiency my whole life. I get migraines because of it and since im 37, its gotten progressivly worse my whole life. Betcha divergence insufficiency is on the rise as we spend more and more time on our phones with eyes converged up close, and lose some ability to diverge and point to farther out objects.

These exercises are intended to help people with binocular double vision. That means if you cover either eye. your double vision goes away. Also, you need to talk to your doctor to determine the cause of your double vision. If you have a muscle or nerve that is being compressed by swelling of surrounding tissue that problem needs to be addressed first.

I've been experiencing this for a while and it was frustrating to go to different doctors/optometrists and they all said 'you only have .25 cylindrical and it's 'negligible' Ugh...it's not too bad when it's arm length for me but at about above 10 feet like watching TV my double vision is bad. Going to the movies is crazy cause with the screen that big the double vision is magnified for me! I'm trying to do these exercises though but how do I make the object look like single object? Seems like the only way for me to focus is to squint a bit i can't just look normally and make it look like a single focus. If it's the TV it's even harder i don't know how to do it. Would love to have a bit more clarification...thanks doc!

Should you do any of these exercises wearing or not wearing corrective prism lenses? I have a pair of glasses that really does a nice job and corrected my double vision but I’d like to just get rid of the prism had a stroke about 40 days ago this is helping those instances and should I do his exercises with or without the glasses

I recently went to my eye care provider for a new prescription and decided to tell them about the double vision (at a distance) I’ve commonly had to deal with for the last four years. It was scary to learn they wanted to put me on prisms, going from not having them to six’s on both sides. It’s been four days now and they’re working but it really hurts (specially right after waking up) and words are still blurry at a distance. Specially my right eye. I don’t know if this will help me in any way but I want to try. Googling just spooked me about developing a “wandering” eye after using prism glasses for a long period of time and the other pain related side affects. Thank you for this thorough video.

I had binocular diplopia in the distance, had every test all my specialists could think of to give me and not one dr could prescribe prisms that took away the dv. Consequently, I’ve been doing things too my brain because of this. It’s all connected. Also , have neck strain, shoulder pain and head pain almost everyday. Beware of many neuro ophthalmologists, strabismus drs. I had many and they were the ones that couldn’t get my prism correction right.

I was doing your "count the lines" exercise. Why is it so difficult for me to count the horizontal lines? My eyes can't maintain a fixed gaze on each horizontal line to count. But vertical and diagonal lines aren't a problem.

What about when you can see your fingers aligned, but then you switch to another eye and the finger has moved? No matter whether I look far or close the same thing happens. can see out of both eyes at the same time, but I can consciously change which one is dominant. I can’t seem to get them to work together for any type of exercise. I also had eye muscle surgery 4 years ago but my eyes still don’t work together.

There is yet another type of double-vision. This type happens in each eye individually and is not because of how the eyes converge. In such a case, the light focuses before the retina. Sometimes it is due to a ciliary muscle lockup, other times is because the eyes has grown too long.

When do you recommend to do these exercises? It's for my 15 year old daughter. Do you recommend to do them once a day? Several times a day? Several times a week? Only when she starts to see double? She doesn't see double often, but we werre thinking that doing these exercises can hel her make her muscles "stronger" and better controlled. I'm struggling. I have cervical instability. When it started to get worse my long range vision started to become distorted. I guess its double vision of things like across a parking lot or at a longer range. It's so bad and confusing I have to quickly look down at the ground. I tried your exercises but don't seem to pertain. I've talked to my Eye Dr and she had no idea what was going on. The way I explain it is the vision out of my right eye is tilted to the left and doesn't line up with my left eye. Everything is a little blurry but not bad. The whole thing then creates a dizzy sensation because my brain can't understand what's happening. Do you have any ideas? Thank you.

I am on my 4th month of vision therapy, and 9 months was recommended by my Doctor. My question is, is this a normal timeframe for Hypotropia AND Exotropia ? I am at a point where I am happy about my results thus far but it is obviously not perfect without the glasses. I want it to be better. I would like it to be comfortable without my glasses and not weird . My situation is complicated where I wasn't using my left eye for twelve years after it fell asleep after a retinal detachment surgery when I was 17. This year it randomly woke up and a lot of vision returned. I hope it gets easier generally. I am optimistic. Thank you

@Joegan MMA I am a lot more comfortable. They removed the prism from my glasses a few months ago and I wear them for work computer and for gaming at home/watching TV. If I take them off, I see the same quality due to my dominant eye. The double vision is gone and the eyes are aligned to normal standards. The remaining thing is the weird feeling. Psychologically. This feeling is when I'm thinking about this. But my general functions tell me it is fine. There is definitely hope for Double Vision cases and mine was extreme. I started psychological counseling around the beginning of this year to help me get through this. The vision continues to improve like magic. The vision therapy was necessary and I am happy I did it. I've graduated vision therapy 1.5 months ago.

I've been getting bad double vision but only when outdoors. Mowing the lawn and riding my bike makes it really bad. My eye doc said it's weak eye muscles but also dry eye contributes to it that's why it's only noticeable when outside.

What you are asking is like Can you please explain what's difference between potato and tomato as both are food stuff. There may be a case where double vision might be because of Astigmatism but not always.these two are totally different things.You will know it all just after you became strabismilogist.
