@IndoorEcosystem
@IndoorEcosystem 8 месяцев назад
I'd choose the heat pad they are generally more energy efficient and work in darkness. You can't have a light on forever. As for placement. Usually the back or side on the outside of the glass is best. Just don't get a huge one they don't need to cover the entire surface of the tank.

It depends how many crabs you have i feed mine every couple of days but I have 50 or so crabs. But I try to feed enough so that is gone in 24 hours. I wouldn't worry about the springtails you can't have too many they are the absolute best thing going and your crabs will eat those as well. I have a video for a super cheap build you should checkout. It's cheap and works really well. You'll know by the thumbnail. You can pick up a second hand tank for next to nothing these days. You only really need to feed them every second or third day. They will graze on stuff in your tank if you have set it up correctly. As for what to feed them I always make it as random as possible so they get as much variety as possible.

Can you give me advice on the quantity of food for crabs? I'm not sure if I'm feeding them too much or too little
@IndoorEcosystem
@IndoorEcosystem 6 месяцев назад
Really depends, they graze constantly but I usually leave the food in their for the microfuana to eat as well. I feed 3 times a week, random stuff from this list. The springtails and isopods eat the left overs before they get mouldy. If you see the food go mouldy reduce until it's gone before it gets mouly. It will take a little trial and error.

@@loftir-koftir I usually just harvest it then leave it sit outside on the concrete for a couple of hours then I soak it underwater for about 30 minutes. That get's most of the other critters out that I don't want. It's not entirely fool proof but I have been doing it for a few years and haven't had any problems with it. The crabs are pretty quick to eat anything alive that come out. I do the same with wood but it isn't as effective as some critters hide inside far enough to not be evicted. But the crabs eat them when they come out.

Do you need to cycle a paludarium before adding crabs to it ?
@IndoorEcosystem
@IndoorEcosystem 10 месяцев назад
Yep, although the crabs don't spend so much time in the water they do need to jump in sometimes. And if the water is full of ammonia or nitrites they will have some problems. Nitrates a less of an issue but still should stay pretty low. It mostly only becomes an issue when they need to molt because that's when they spend a lot of time in the water preparing.
@terraquaman

@@IndoorEcosystem okey thanks man ! My vampires had babies a few days ago and I saw one of the adults eating a baby so I panicked and quickly set up a small paludarium for theme and added theme straight away. I didn’t want theme to get eaten. Do you think it’s fine if I change the water every day or so and just keep an eye on theme?
@IndoorEcosystem
@IndoorEcosystem 10 месяцев назад
@@terraquaman No problem 😊 I have a playlist for Vampire Crabs. Basically covers every question you'll ever have. They are highly cannibalistic so you need to take the adults away from the babies as soon as possible. But the babies are highly cannibalistic as well and will eat each other too. But that's kinda unavoidable. Just keep an eye on their sizes. If some get bigger than the others quite fast they will eat the smaller ones so you might need to move them. Feeding them regularly and a decent amount will reduce the cannibalisation a fair bit too. As for the water and an emergency tank you can seed it with beneficial bacteria from any established tank. Just use stuff from those tanks to help build a new one. Gravel rocks plants filter foam etc. Then just change the water 3 times per week about 40% is usually enough 🙂

I have a feeling my crabs ignore most of the food I give them in favor of springtails, but now I really have no idea whether they're eating enough. I will give them some fish food, or carrots/peas on occasion, but these foods are mostly left alone. Do you have any idea how much to feed per crab roughly? Can they sustain themselves on just springtails? I want to try more live foods but mealworms come in such large quantities I'm hesitant to buy them. After a number of casulties (likely due to too many males), I only had one crab left, and today it died too, it appeared to be in a position of feeding on springstails, can't help but wonder if he starved. Maybe it was something else, after he molted in january he had quite dull colors so maybe he was just old. One question I do have, and I hope it isn't a stupid one, do you remove food when it's left uneaten? I've assumed the springtails would get to it after some time, but for something like a chunck of carrot it can take like a week, might these leftover foods have been an issue? Would love to have more info before I try again with new crabs. I'm confident in my paludarium setup, so I really want to know if there's anything I've done that caused my crabs to die or if I just had back luck.
@IndoorEcosystem
@IndoorEcosystem Год назад
Sorry to hear you had so many losses :( Feeding them is pretty easy I just put in small amounts probably 3 times a week the same stuff you are adding. I just leave it in there forever. If the crabs don't eat it the springtails and everything else will. Nothing goes moldy or stays around long. I find the crabs generally eat stuff a few days after adding it. They don't like fresh stuff unless it is live food or freshly dead food like shrimp or fish. You can't over feed them which is good and they will eat springtails a lot!! Mine do the same. They just hang around old food to eat the springtails. Your last crab loss sounds like it might have been old age. Usually when the molt and have less colours it's age related but it could also be diet related. More vitamins and minerals would help but again it's hard to tell. I sprinkle cory sinking granuals in my tank every second day as well and sometimes fish flakes to shake things up. I find this is a good substitute for any other missed dietary things. I recently started using dried mealworms and they seem to be a big hit. I leave them in little piles and they are gone overnight so give them a go next time.
