Chronic Wasting Disease is a fatal neurological disease affecting members of the deer family. If left unmanaged, CWD can have catastrophic, long-term impacts on Texas deer.
If you’re deer hunting in Texas, test your harvest for CWD. It’s mandatory in CWD zones and voluntary elsewhere. With your participation, biologists can gather statewide data to aid in CWD management strategies to reduce the risk of CWD spread.
For more information and a map of CWD zones and check stations, visit tpwd.texas.gov...

If texas was serious about slowing this down they would shutdown captive breeding industry....$$$
@lclnbm

Which means?
@703fishing3
@703fishing3 Год назад
@@lclnbm Texas is full of high fence ranches, captive whitetail breeding is a multi million dollar industry by itself, a high fence ranch with an unnaturally high density of deer is the likely source of cwd since pathogens/disease can spread rapidly in high concentrations of wildlife.

They can't do it for the same reason that African nations can't. Texas, like most states that aren't blue, are states with high populations of hunters. Where I live in the north, white tails are HUGE, easily double the size of what I've seen living down south and in the Midwest. The reason is because there aren't many hunters in blue states and so the populations get out of control, but, the big males are actually able to breed. In the south and Midwest, unless you were to close down all hunting (which wouldn't happen because people would still do it on their properties), you will hunt everything to extinction. Yes, MOST hunters are conservationists. Myself included... But... Hunters don't like to recognize just how many hilljacks and rednecks there are who are white trash and sometimes shoot at anything they can find. They don't care if they hit a deer with a gut shot or in the leg, they don't care if populations are low. Theres a lot more idiots in this world than those who are logical and so captive breeding is much more nuanced than just money.

What's the deers lifespan with cwd?
@texasparksandwildlife
@texasparksandwildlife Год назад
It depends on a lot of factors, but CWD can drastically reduce their lifespan and it's common for them to die between 18 months and two years after infection.

Unfortunately, chronic wasting disease cannot be identified by just looking at them. A perfectly healthy-looking deer can still be carry chronic wasting disease. They only show signs towards the end, such as emaciation, drooling and disorientation. That's why testing is so important to managing the spread of this disease.

The sick animals used to be easy prey for wolves. Now we have replaced the wolves with hunters who ignore diseased animals and mainly shoot healthy ones. So the sick animals are allowed to survive and spread their disease.

Deer can not be harvested without a license, tag, and within an open season. Secondly, if there is concern for a deer showing signs consistent with CWD, they should notify their local biologist or game warden; the biologist or game warden can then coordinate for the safe removal and testing of that animal if indicated.

Like any disease, it can be very difficult to mitigate and it may never be eradicated entirely, but we have an obligation to try and limit the damage it causes to wildlife and ecosystems. If we do nothing, the problem will get much worse.

@texasparksandwildlife
@texasparksandwildlife 8 месяцев назад
Chronic wasting disease has been found in deer in Michigan as well as many other states, which is why it's important that we study it and monitor it closely. There's still a lot that we don't know, but so far no person has ever contracted chronic wasting disease from deer. Still, it's best to avoid eating meat from animals that have chronic wasting disease, and the only way to know that is to have them tested.
