Epidural steroid injections are a common treatment for chronic neck and back pain. They provide pain relief for conditions such as spinal stenosis, disc herniation, and degenerative disc disease. Dr. Arpan Patel explains how this treatment is administered and what to expect when you receive an epidural steroid injection.
If you’re suffering from ongoing back and neck pain, we may be able to help. Schedule an appointment with our Pain Management team: www.iowaclinic.com/pain-manag...

Please doctor can I ask if it could work for me and in which cervical number.. I appreciate your answer as I am in sever pain..here is my MRI RESULT MRI CERVICAL SPINE History: OA. Left radicular pain. Results: The previous MB of 2021 has been reviewed. There is disc narrowing with loss of T2 signal at C4/5 and C5/6. There is slight loss of height of cervical and thoracic vertebrae, unchanged since 2021. The spinal canal above C4 and below C6 is capacious. The upper cervical cord and medulla appear intact. The facet joints are normally aligned. No compressive disc protrusion is seen from C2 to C4. The neural foramina are patent. At C4-5, the disc is mildly protruding. C5 nerve root impingement is not suspected. At C5-6, the disc is protrading. There is no cord compression. Acquired foraminal stenosis is present bilaterally particularly on the right with decophyte formation, with evidence of C6 nerve root impingement. The C6-7 and C7-T1 discs are kormal. The C7 and C8 nerve roots are clear. Comment: There is acquired foraminal stenosis at C5-6 bilaterally particularly on the right, but no additional high grade stenosis is seen. There is no cord compression.

Are the injections painful during the procedure? Also how risky is the procedure, i.e. what could go wrong and how often do those anomalies occur?

I never had one but have 4 bad discs and rather take pain meds but I cannot find a doctor anymore to prescribe them. I can tell you that my wife at the time my daughter was born had an epidural and they punctured the thecal sac and that leads to spinal fluid leaking out into you body and then your brain drops down on your brain stem because the spinal fluid basically keeps you brain floating. she got a massive terrible headache that no pain meds can help. They took her back to try to do a spinal "patch" which is to take your own blood from your leg and then insert it with another needle into the spine near the first failed epidural. The theory is that your own blood will coagulate and "patch" the leak in your thecal sac. But they had to do it 2 times with my wife and it took all darn day. That is another reason for me not to get one. The other reason in my case is that I still have to work as mechanic and sit, bend, twist etc and if the steroid epidural numbs the pain really good, then I have no idea if I am re injuring my back while the steroid is still in there, which it can be for a few weeks. The doctors don't tell you this and they all just want to give you a shot because of the "Trend Medicine" where they don;t want to do the LEAST invasive thing and give you pain meds. At 64, I injured my back in 2008, 2022 and April 2024. The first time it took over 9 months for my back pain to lessen were I was able to back way off my pain meds. Same in 2022. i'm still healing and looking for pain meds, not an injection. My 30 year doctor passed in 2021 and now cannot find doctor to give me pain meds. I was never addicted, never abused them and got off them no problem when they ran out. I also never had to INCREASE the dose as many say is the issue that ALL people will build up tolerance to pain meds, everyone is different. Good luck. BTW, not to scare you by you can die from this procedure, make sure they tell you all the possible side effects.
