It is common for patients to feel intimidated and scared when they hear they need to be facedown for several weeks, following a vitrectomy eye surgery. Dr. Richard Fish takes you step by step through the process so you know what to expect and can feel confident about the care you’ll receive.

I went through this 3 times for retinal surgery, every single method : 1st by heavy oil, 2nd by gas, and 3rd by buckling & silicone oil. The last one was oil removal. I had to keep my face down for about 2 months. That was extremely awful and I will never want to experience any of this horrible surgery never ever again and again. Guys with high myopia should go to the ophthalmologist at least once a year. Do trust me you will never regret.

I'm going through this right now fir the second time in my right eye. First time was bad, but although I now know what to expect, the second time is proving worse because I also have a thick cataract in my left eye. Basically right now I'm down to about 30% vision. I've come through the positioning, staying face down, had to stay two days in hospital which wasn't pleasant. The pain on my back, shoulders and neck was incredible. Now my right eye is painful all the time. And, thanks to that cataract, I'm finding it bloody difficult to get around, and the vision is causing migraines, but that, the surgeon assures me, is normal. In short, I am having a bloody unpleasant time of it with no friends or family who can help. Trying to keep a positive attitude but right now that is hard.

I checked the pricing on rentals. In 2024, you can get a chair, a pillow for your bed, and a table top support unit for $500 for two weeks. My insurance co-pay is only $100, but I have to prepay the $500 and wait for reimbursement. I need three surgeries on each eye (epiretinal membrane disease, macular hole, and retinal detachment), and later cataract surgery. I'm wondering if they can do all three surgeries at one time or if I'll have to do each of them separately. My concern is how soon can one drive after surgery? I heard about 6 weeks. Rather difficult when you live alone. Right now I have a 6 month reprieve when he'll check it again to see if it is progressing. My feeling is that I will have to have it done sooner or later. Let's just get it over with. Was also told that there is no guarantee that my vision will be better either.

What if someone had this very surgery and the doctor never once told them that they had to be faced down afterwards... never told them they should never sleep on their backs..? Wouldn't that be negligence on the doctors part if this person is now totally blind from complications from the surgery??
@VengeanceLN
@VengeanceLN 2 года назад
That depends, as there are multiple types, this one explains the gas bubble but sometimes oil is used and when the oil is used you can sleep on your back and such
@ravindraxgopal
@ravindraxgopal 2 года назад
Blindness could have occurred due to other deficiencies or health complexities and not necessarily due to not lying head down. I had a left eye vitrectomy done 5-6 years ago and followed the Doctor's advice of lying on the right side ( opp side of affected eye) as much as possible when sleeping, NOT TO LIFT WEIGHTS and NOT TO BEND DOWN. These were meant to avoid pressure on the Retina and consequent detachment. I am a diabetic on Insulin and i recovered in about 4 weeks. As cautioned by my Surgeon i developed cataract in the same eye and went through a 'peaceful' surgery. Vision is clear and i have had no problems on the left eye. Recently I had to undergo vitrectomy on the right eye. Same procedure. It's just 1 week past and I hope to recover fully ( By God's Grace) in about 3 weeks. Of course I continue to keep stress levels low, put my eye drops 3-4 times a day, keep my Sugar levels under check and sleep extra hours on my left side or lie on the bed listening to spiritual talks or music. It's important to recognise that while Surgeon can treat the ailment it is Divine energy that heals the wound.

@@VengeanceLN The use of oil does often require posturing as well, so your comment is not quite correct (the objective is the same, i.e. to use the buoyancy of the gas or oil to exert pressure on the reattached retina).
