What does it take to be considered a Barefoot Shoe?
Minimal, Foot shaped, natural. these are all marketing terms for a concept of footwear that is minimally invasive to the movement and shape of the foot.
But to be considered in this category, these are the factors to consider..
Lightweight -less weight Makes it easier to lift the foot and engage in the dorsiflexion needed to step forward without tripping. most conventional shoes are so heavy, that people develop drop foot, from the inability to lift the forefoot.
Wide Toe Box - How can it be natural to have your feet bound together like firewood. If someone saw your fingers bound by a rubber band, you would think they were insane.
would that help or hinder your hand movement?
A wide Toe box allows freedom of toe movement, allowing them to splay and constrict as movement demands.
-utilizing greater surface area, providing greater stability.
-promotes dexterity of the toes, keeping the toes, especially the big toe from misalignment, causing bunions.
No Toe Spring,
Toe Spring , this promotes poor gait mechanics
combined with a raised heel, leads to poor posture, unstable lifting surface and constriction in toe range of motion.
tight calves, plantar fasciitis and hammer toes are common issues from shoes with rigid toe spring and high heels, that mimic the toe spring because of the heal elevation.
.Thin & Flexible - the ability to move your feet in the way nature intended, will need as little resistance as possible.
