I'm happy that you mentioned that usually we shouldn't used anti-diarrhea medication. I'm a nurse and I do travelling vaccination and we do not recommend that type of medication because the bug that cause diarrhea needs to get out. instead we recommend that people consults a doctor or a health care specialist and get a antibiotic that they can use when they have there first signs of travelers diarrhea. But I get if you get sick before your 14 hours flight back home anti-diarrhea medication wouldn't be to bad... :)

Also good for burns and so many other things! And tea tree oil is a coagulant, and also helps with bites, scratches, cuts, acne, etc.
@vonHintenHorst
@vonHintenHorst 8 лет назад
+Dawn Hannah You put tea tree oil directly on wounds? I thought that could be harmful?
@Dawn_Hannah
@Dawn_Hannah 8 лет назад
vonHintenHorst The only way it theoretically could be harmful is if it wasn't a pure oil. It's not considered a "hot oil", but if you were worried, you can always use a carrier like coconut or olive oil. It is considered antiseptic and antimicrobial due to high levels of terpinen-4-ol. It's also antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antiparasitic, and anti-inflammatory. If you're interested, there are articles on PubMed regarding the use of Melaleuca Alternifolia(tea tree) medicinally.

Things to add: Superglue! So many uses, but for 'field medicine' can be used to keep a cut that requires stitches closed! You should also add a bottle of sanitizer or a small bar of soap. Lastly, you need some kind of blade/multitool which can be a lifesaver when it comes to first aid applications - and just general usage.

Whoa...crazy. It's actually true that you can discover allergies you didn't know you had! Just this week, I was working under a bridge over a river that just flooded, leaving a layer of nasty mud and river plants all over everything. I was kicking the plants and mud off of the walkways we needed to get across, and it kicked up a bunch of allergens I didn't know I was sensitive to. I was sneezing and miserable for the rest of the day and I work outside v_v hahaha so LISTEN TO NADINE SHE KNOWS lol

This was very useful, thanks Nadine! One thing I personally would add is cystitis meds. Powder you dilute in water to drink which helps relieve it or reduce it till can get to doctor to get antibiotics. I went to America last year and pretty much packed every med possible. But was really ill from both ends and then realised I forgot Dioralyte as I don't usually need it. I had Imodium though but didn't help much as was pretty bad. Was abit worrying as had 8 hour flight back to the UK in couple of days. Thankfully I recovered in time.

I need to get myself a niffty little bag. My first aid kit is literally a ziplock bag. I always carry anti-nausea tablets for motion sickness, food reactions/allergies, etc. I throw in a ThermaCare patch (the sticky pads that heat up to help with pain) as a portable heating pad if I get period cramps or any other pain. :)

Great video and so nice to see that you have put some energy into knowing what you are keeping in your first aid kit. Here is my ideas about adding stuff. Tweezers, and you can put some cotton pads inside the pill containers to keep them quiet. I always keep some latex gloves ready if I need to assist others and l also keep some Vaseline which is good for closings up small kuts and brushes and a small bottle of vodka (you know the airplane/minibar size) it's for moral and keeping a situation under control.... It more to ad but I choose to think of this kit a dedicated firs aid and I'm assuming that you have a hygiene bag somewhere that will cover the rest. Like nail clippers and some general cleaning supplies Pluss pluss. Happy travels and a great weekend 👍

A first aid kit is so important-especially if you’re traveling to a country with a different native language or rural areas. For carryon travel, I put my first aid liquids and creams in a sandwich size baggie in my 3-1-1 bag, with a card listing the items that go in it. I leave the baggie and card in the 3-1-1 bag, so I never forget to put them back before flying!

Hi Nadine, great video! I would like to suggest if you have an injury/burn/cut, do make sure the area and your hands are clean before applying tegaderm dressing or you will trap and incubate bacteria into the wound. Also, do not forget to monitor the area of trauma and surrounding skin for spreading infection, or if you become systemically unwell, like cold or flu, this could indicate infection in a wound too.

@RymVri108
@RymVri108 8 лет назад
The superglue is a great suggestion. I usually end up bouldering, which tears up my hands, so I use a hand salve specifically meant for healing (made by Joshua Tree) and I also carry Tiger Balm around with me. Not only is it great for sore muscles, but a little dab under your nose can help clear up sinuses too. I also have a snake bite kit, which most people probably won't need, but for me, it lives in my outdoor bag.

A bit on the pricy side, but I carry one or more 4-inch/10.1cm squares of Optifoam non-adhesive foam dressing and about 2 feet of folded up Hypafix (2-inch wide) self-stick dressing tape. You can cut the foam to needed size and the tape to length. Very multipurpose. Holds much better than BandAids or similar, especially for skin areas that move like elbows or knees. Available on Amazon. Thanks for the video.

I work as a remote/expedition Paramedic and I am honestly rather impressed with what you have in your kit for a basic first aid kit. I think some additional things to think about: Benadryl... it is a wonder drug. It's also great PO for nausea/upset stomach, insomnia/sleep loss, and even sedation if you need it. The iodine/betadine you have can also be used to treatment questionable drinking water. Other additions to this kit I would l look into is some anti-fungal cream. Things to think about taking your kit further depending on where you are traveling are some dental care items (clove oil, dental cement), a trauma kit if you are out trekking, and your own set of IV tubing/needles as many countries still re-use that type of equipment.

Oh, I just thought of another. I always carry a little bit of duct tape because you can use it in a pinch on cuts and scrapes or use it to tape a finger up and if you get a hole in your bag you can easily fix it too! I wrap tape around a sharpie that lives in my bag. Came in very handy on a trip to the US when my husband's NEW bag ripped at King's Cross...we hadn't even got as far as the airport!
