There are a few websites I buy seeds from that offer some of these heat tolerant vegetables. 1) ECHO farm: www.echobooks.net/bookstore/seeds/ 2) Seed Savers Exchange 3) Southern Exposure Seed Exchange 4) Bakers Creek

@floridavegetablegardening 2 года назад
Thank you. Sounds like your garden is going great! Do you mean Malabar spinach? I think your autocorrect changed it to Melbourne, but Malabar spinach is the one that really grows like crazy. I have to say though that I don't care much for the flavor and texture of Malabar spinach. I prefer Green Callaloo Amaranth and other Vegetable/Leaf Amaranths, or New Zealand Spinach for summer greens. You can get Malabar spinach seeds and some of the other tropical greens online from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange OR Seed Savers Exchange. From Southern Exposure Seed Exchange: Malabar: www.southernexposure.com/products/red-malabar-summer-spinach/ New Zealand Spinach: www.southernexposure.com/products/new-zealand-summer-spinach/ Callaloo: www.southernexposure.com/products/callaloo-amaranth-greens/ From Seed Savers Exchange: Malabar: www.seedsavers.org/red-malabar-spinach New Zealand Spinach: www.seedsavers.org/new-zealand-spinach Baker Creek also has a variety of spinaches, inlcuding some of the summer ones: www.rareseeds.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=spinach

Thank you for your videos, Central Florida here Kissimmee/Orlando…How about Sugar baby watermelon? I transplanted a few plants recently.
@floridavegetablegardening
@floridavegetablegardening 2 года назад
Hi. You're welcome! The best time to plant watermelon from seeds is January - March. Planting this late in the spring is not ideal, but since you planted transplants, the plants have had a head start over starting from seeds. It's quite likely that you're going to have problems with diseases and bugs in the near future, but if you stay on top of any problems that arise, you might still get a decent harvest. I hope you get a nice harvest. Good luck!

How did your Sunn Hemp work for the nematodes?
@floridavegetablegardening
@floridavegetablegardening Год назад
The Sunn Hemp has been a great cover crop and it grew very well in the nematode infested soil. However, I won’t really know if there are less nematodes until after this spring season when I pull my tomatoes out of the beds where sunn hemp was growing. It’s not going to be a very scientific experiment though because I am trying numerous things to battle the nematodes and I won’t know for sure what, if anything, or what combination of things is helping. If I can get the nematodes under control then I will start experimenting to see which things help the most but it will probably take a few growing seasons to figure it out. I will definitely keep growing sunn hemp for a cover crop. It has multiple benefits besides just suppressing nematodes and I am very pleased with it so far.

Hi, I heard that there is lot of sulfur in Florida water, and soil. Is this a problem for the garden or plants? Any tips please.
@floridavegetablegardening
@floridavegetablegardening 2 года назад
Hi. I have never heard of the sulfur in the water or soil in Florida being a problem for the plants. Plants do need some sulfur, and there can be problems when there isn't enough sulfur in the soil. I think it's much more common for soil to not have enough sulfur than too much. At my house we have well water and it is high in sulfur and minerals, like iron and calcium. I think too much iron could potentially be a problem for the plants, but I always water my garden with the high-sulfur well water and have not had any problems.

Have you tried growing eggplants in the summer? Thank you
@floridavegetablegardening
@floridavegetablegardening 2 года назад
Hi. No, I have only grown eggplants in the spring. I’m not a big fan of them and don’t usually grow them anymore. Eggplants might do better than a lot of things during the summer but I still wouldn’t expect them to thrive in summer. Once the temperatures go above 95 they will stop setting fruit and might drop their flowers. Plus the fruit is likely to get bitter when it’s really hot. You could try it and if it doesn’t work out just plant another batch in August/September for the fall season. Or it’s also possible that your eggplants will survive the summer and start producing again when the temperatures cool down some.

May I ask you what is the lettuce to grow now in central Florida? I´m a beginner. Thank you so much.
@floridavegetablegardening
@floridavegetablegardening 2 года назад
Hi! Well unfortunately, lettuce doesn't do well in Florida this time of year. Lettuce is a cool season crop and is very intolerant of heat. Once the daily temperatures stay above 80 degrees the lettuce starts getting bitter and rubbery, and goes to seed really fast (called "bolting"). However, there are a few lettuces that are more heat tolerant. Jericho Romaine has some heat tolerance and green oak leaf lettuces have a little more heat tolerance too. Just this year I tried a heat-tolerant variety called "Manoa" that was bred in Hawaii, and I am really excited about it. I have some growing right now and even though it's been too hot for lettuce, this lettuce is still good! I just had a delicious salad the other night and this is the latest in the year that I have ever been able to have non-bitter lettuce. I don't know how much longer it will last, but I'm impressed so far. I have it growing in a self-watering grow box in partial shade to keep it cooler, so I think that is helping. If you wanted to try growing one of the varieties I mentioned during this hot part of the year, then just try to keep it cooler and plan to harvest the leaves when they are still small. If the lettuce still turns bitter and bolts, then don't be discouraged, and just plan on starting more in the fall, which is prime time to start lettuce in Florida. I haven't seen many places offering the Manoa seeds, but I got mine here: www.wildgardenseed.com/product_info.php?products_id=271
