Since the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum was opened in 1992, the private collection of Baron Hans-Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza has become one of the most important in the world, among those exposed to the public. Since the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum was opened in 1992, the private collection of Baron Hans-Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza has become one of the most important in the world, among those exposed to the public.
In reality, at first the collection of more than 700 paintings was only loaned to the city of Madrid and then sold to the Spanish state in 1993. The baron's decision to sell was undoubtedly influenced by his wife, Carmen. , former Miss Spain in the 1960s.
But she was also encouraged by the possibility of hosting the works in the Palacio de Villahermosa, a building from the early 1800s, renovated to house the museum.
The collection inside develops in chronological order and is divided over three floors. It starts from the top floor, the second, with ancient art and then continues with the Renaissance and Baroque.
Along the way there are rooms dedicated to specific themes such as the portrait or to particular movements or periods such as the scenes of Dutch daily life. But the rooms that captured me most are those on the first floor dedicated to modern art with the section of the Impressionists and post-Impressionists and the ground floor with the works of the '900.
The collection is generally strong in German art of all kinds, also because the baron was of German-Austrian origins. And there are several rooms dedicated to German Expressionism with works by Emil Nolde, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Otto Dix and Max Beckmann. But with them also other artists of the Blue Rider group Franz Marc and Kandinsky. On the ground floor among the works that I liked the most there are those of Braque, Mondrian, Klee, Max Ernst and Picasso. The last rooms focus on my favorite period, the late 1900s.
Being able to visit it all and stop on each work requires a little more than a couple of hours, but as always I tell you the 5 works that are unmissable for me.
The first is part of the works of Paul Gauguin's collection of Carmen Cervera "Mata Mua". The title translated from Taitian means "In ancient times" and recalls Gauguin's desire to rediscover the naturalness of ancient times on his 1891 trip to Tahiti.
The second work I have chosen is Kandinsky's "Image with three points" from 1914. Without Kandinsky, abstract art made of signs and colors as we know it would not exist today.
And being in Spain one of the museum's unmissable works, it cannot fail to be a Picasso: "The harlequin with mirror". A sort of self-portrait in the role of a harlequin, which actually unites several characters.
Still on the subject of Spain, I expected to find one of Dalì's masterpieces that belongs to this collection: "The dream caused by the flight of a bee around a pomegranate just before waking up". This was not the case, but on the other hand, I was happy to discover a wonderful work by the American artist Georgia O'keeffe: "White Iris n * 7". One of the typical flowers represented as if they were close-up photographs.
The last work I advise you not to miss is located right at the end of the path and is "Woman in the Bath" by Roy Lichtenstein. Typical of Lichtenstein, the work looks like a 1960s comic in which the protagonist is a happy woman bathing in a bathtub.
In addition to the permanent collection, temporary exhibitions are also organized at the museum, such as the one in this period on the occasion of ARCO dedicated to Joan Jonas. An American artist famous for his performances and his video art works.
