About Us.
Byther Farm is a small organic homestead, designed and managed using permaculture practices. We aim for self-sufficiency in fruit and vegetables for increased self reliance and better resilience to the modern world. I recognise that we are unlikely to be truly self sufficient, but do the best we can. I share our home with my loving partner, Mr J and our cat, Monty.
We are a fifty-something couple who live on a smallholding in Monmouthshire, Wales. We are going green and creating a gentler, cleaner and more healthy life for our family.
There is a large organic kitchen garden with no dig gardening raised beds and young food forest in which to grown our fruit and vegetables.
We keep chickens and Aylesbury ducks.

I, too, have a suppressed immune system. I am fighting a fungus in my lung. Thank God it wasn't lung cancer. The Mayo Clinic is treating me for the fungus cryptoccus. I am a hobby gardener all my life. I am 67 years old. (It will be a hard day when I quit making compost. HA!) Well, the short of the story is, I talked to my doctor and he advised wearing gloves, long sleeves, and even a mask if directly handling manure of any kind and don't forget the hat and sunblock. It takes me some time to get prepared to go to the "Garden of Weedin'. I'm still keeping my hobby of my wonderful No Dig Garden. Thank you! Good health!

Liz, thank you for suggesting what can be started this time of the year in a garden. I started taking an interest in raised bed gardening about a year ago. My son suggested that I check out the gardening channels on RU-vid to learn how to start a raised bed. I was amazed by all the knowledge and suggestion on how to do everything from building the frame to developing the soil, how to control pest infestation in the garden without using harmful pesticides. But what impressed me the most is the Gardening Community, how credit is given to others who started a certain way of growing seed or multi planting or no dig methods. I would like to say Kudos to all that set such a good example of sharing your growing knowledge and i am looking forward to viewing more of your videos.

I so enjoy all of your work, Liz... I am 75 and have .4 acre to plant around. This is my first year to garden alone. Almost everything planted is a test crop, but I have 13 varieties of beans, Egyptian Onions, Collards, Tree Tomatoes, dwarf Honeynut Squash, Hamburg Parsley, carrots, basil, Big Leaf Tong Ho, Swiss Chard, Day Lilly's, Dwarf Peas, Miniature Corn, Zucchini, Water Cress, Russet Potatoes, Potato Mint and Jerusalem Artichokes. I tried planting Sunflowers in succession, but none of them have gotten taller than a foot before meeting their end. I suspect a squirrel. I can't believe you give away the leaves from your Swiss Chard! I like to steam the chard stalks and leaves with beet greens. Then I fry a chopped shallot in olive and chile oil, add the steamed greens and chop them with a C-shaped chef's knife in the pan. I add cheddar cheese to this until it melts, and then mix the whole thing with potatoes, either fried potatoes or steamed. This is my favorite meal and is very healthy unless you are someone who needs to avoid oxalates due to a problem with kidney stones. I compost my beets, though. Hate the sugary taste of those, but love the beet greens!

Very nice video and I agree all the previous kind comments. One thought: I was surprised to hear that you feel the need to freeze parsley. Parsley is biennial and I find it winters well. Although I live in a relatively mild climate I have brushed snow off parsley after its first year and underneath the leaves were perfectly fresh. At the beginning of year two you can get some new parsley going ready for when the year one crop goes to seed.

Liz, I think it's a good idea to for everyone to wear gloves, especially if they're handling any manure or crop amendment! I started wearing them after I got a really bad rash from a fertilizer containing rock dust. I've also read papers that suggest that bonemeal and feathermeal from chickens that you can get from garden centers has a pretty significant chance of being contaminated with Salmonella. It's hard because some soil microbes can be very beneficial and even relieve depression, but others can be very vicious like Anthrax. Definitely keep safe w/ gloves and get your beneficial microbes from eating your washed veggies (lot of good microbes still remain even after washing)!

I cannot for the life of me grow Parsley. Year after year after year I sow it and it stays small and pathetic. Ditto for shop bought that is planted out. Tiny garden, limited space and light and no chance of an allotment. Not to mention all the pests that seem to find their way into this small area. You are so blessed to have that space. I'm lucky if my Chard gets as long as my hand (oh and not to mention beet leaf miner, in fact many forms of leaf miner plague my plants) And I don't use chemicals or pesticides at all.

Hi Victoria, ducks are superb slug detectives! They are allowed into the veg garden during the late autumn, winter and very early spring and I net any plants that they aren't allowed to eat, because yes, they eat almost anything growing in the beds. I allow them into the food forest once the currants and blueberries have been harvested otherwise they would strip the plants of the fruits. But they are so good at keeping down the slug population it is worth the effort of moving fences and netting plants.

A WORTHY GARDEN HANDSOMELY FINE ! I love your Vegetable Garden. With all the different shades of green and other foliage colours on your plants, their textures, finishes, densities, heights and the oftentimes overlooked 'empty' spaces between; needed as is punctuation, pause and as a foil to accentuate the exuberant abundance all about !!

Great video Liz;I love that you add ways to cook things too. I've grown the same peas for year but have just discovered some few pea varieties that the seed suppliers say we can sow now . These include Terrain and Rondo (plus a few others that I can't remember!) I'm going to give them a try and see how they do.

Hi. So since your climate is mild, these are things to plant in mild climates, rather than in the USA West where it's regularly in the 90's, and even the 100's (30+ Celsius) in the summer. Not sure some if your suggestions would work here.

I just found your channel. I want to change to permaculture, so I was pleased to see that you cultivate that way. Two questions : what make are your gloves, and what do you do about snails?

Fresh herbs are ridiculous pricey where I live in OH, USA so I will try to grow basil, dill, cilantro & maybe some edible flowers. Did you say which zone you are in & I missed it? This vid is a great idea to keep gardens plentiful & thank u for simple suggestions what to do w/veg & herbs. I found you thru Huw Richard's channel =)

Basil can also be easily propagated in a glass of water. Just cut below a leaf node and remove the two large lower leaves, pop in a glass of water on your kitchen windowsill and they will root readily.
