I moved to Germany on January 1st this year and I was totally not prepared for how cold it is here.! I went out today and it was - 1 degrees and I was literally cursing myself for coming out. This is a much needed video. Thank you.

When I was in highschool, I spent a "summer" in Kiel, northern Germany. I was equipped (warm rain coat and boots) so it was fine, but when I came back home (to Geneva), the first thing I did was head for the lake and soak in the sun. I did that for 3 solid days. That's atypical of me, I am not a water nor sun person. But the drive to do that was powerful. After that experience, I stopped making fun of the caravans of Germans on the highways making a bee line for the Mediterrean coast. I understood.

For gloves it's important that they are long enough to cover the wrist, so there's no gap between the glove and the jacket.

For jackets I find it very important how the opening of the sleeve is done. I prefer a light fabric with an elastic strap under the end of the sleeve which really holds the cold outside. And a collar which can be closed nearly up to the nose to protect the neck and even the face.

Winter in Germany is warm compared to back home in Sweden so I wear less clothes here and feel that it's often too warm to have a jacket on and I feel a bit awkward when I go out in a sweatshirt when most people have jackets on.

Smoothly~ it feels like a commercial jingle :D I even found myself mumble it along with you. Great video! Layers are so important in the changing seasons. In the morning it's about 2°C and in the evening when you go home it's about 18°C. We even call it "anzwiebeln" when you put on your layers of clothing :'D (which refers to the layers of an onion) And honestly, I regretted it every time I thought "Nah, it will be fine..." and didn't layer enough or put on something too hot. If you have to ride the bus to work or going in and out of buildings much around the day, believe me, you will regret it. Layers!

Thanks for another great video! In the US, many of the better outdoor rated jackets these days, have temperature rating tags that will tell you up to what temperature (of cold) they are effective in keeping you warm - in addition to the elements (rain, wind, sun/SPF, etc.) they protect against. Do you all have that? This year I found a great reusable handwarmer (or bodywarmer) heatbank from Zippo brand. You can recharge it at home, or in the car. The heat lasts up to 9 hours and you can also use it to recharge your phone, if you're stranded somewhere. It provides safety, saves money and waste (for those using disposable hand/body warmers)... I'm loving it. It's great to have while stuck waiting outside for the train or bus. It was about $30 USD.
@simplegermany
@simplegermany 2 года назад
No we don’t have temperature tags in clothing, only on sleeping bags 😅On outdoor gear you will find tags for UV, wind, rain protection etc 😊
@suzannes5888
@suzannes5888 2 года назад
@@simplegermany Ah, we're not that fancy, we don't have a weather rating on all outerwear, just the higher quality outwear that's well made and advertises to protect the buyer in "x" sustained condition/s. (Like the sleeping bag rating.) The outdoor brand I love the most is Arc'teryx' and then Sweaty Betty (from London) for running and also winter outdoor sports (their stuff is super functional, thoughtfully made and also looks and wears great)... They're both expensive, but timeless, and so worth it - and are really hard to wear out! SB goes on sale for 50%+ off twice a year and I get what I need then. :)).... Back to my packing so that I can enjoy some of beautiful Simple Germany, soon 🏂 🧗 🚴 🤸 🧘🏼‍♀️ 🛀

In places where you have more snow, the first snow of the year also sparks a chaos all over the place. Just as if the people who lived there for their whole life have forgotten that there might be snow when it's cold - oh surprise! ;-) But later in the winter another snowy day would not really be a problem. But if you are not used to it, be aware that it gets slippery, it can get really slippery. It depends on the conditions, on the temperature and so on. The most slippery it can be, would be when there is ice and it rains on top of it. Water on top of solid "black" ice is the most slippery thing you can imagine, well additional soap would be worse, but just by a tiny bit more. Or it just can be uncomfortable when there is snow that melts and water accumulates everywhere up to 10cm deep on the streets or on the side walks, because the water does not flow through the snow, it just stays there. So better don't walk there with sneakers ;-) But when there is undisturbed fresh snow, it can be fun to walk on it. It can be powdery light or it can be semi hard and crunches under your feet with a fun noise and feel under your feet. But snow where many people did walk or where many cars did drive over it, tends to get slippery... That was just for people who are new to winter and snow ;-) And of course, there are different words for different kinds of snow and ice... not only the people in Finland have them, Germans have quite some nice words too for different kinds if snow and ice, for snow fall or a mixture of snow and rain fall or small white hail pebbles or bigger and more dangerous hail and for different kinds of snow and ice and slush covers on the ground... And when there is snow outside, not the slush that tends to be in the cities, but a real white snow cover, don't forget to take a walk outside... The landscape is different, the sounds are different, a bit more quiet... (And don't forget your winter cloths, it's gonna be cold ;-)

I'm in K'Ruhe and it'll be our first winter here. This video is super helpful! Is Jen's jacket from Decathalon? Does the wool socks/hat become less itchy over time/when it's so cold?

Jen's jacket looks like Fjällräven, a bit pricier (and therefore very long lasting) and not available at Decathlon. Fjällräven is available in special Outdoor Shops like "Globetrotter". Nevertheless, Decathlon offers pretty decent winter jackets. If you look for wool which is less itchy, try Merino wool. It is a bit pricier than sheep's wool, therefore less itchy and other than sheep will still be warm if it is wet.

Yes, @Alexander Raabe-Kajander is right about everything 🙂 The skiing jacket (orange and pink) that you see in the video is from Decathlon. That’s the one I used for cycling. Regarding the wools thingy, it depends on how sensitive you are. Yvonne couldn’t wear my wool hat, for example. If you’re super sensitive to wool, then better get merino stuff o wool stuff that has an inner layer of fleece (so you don’t feel the wool directly on your skin)

Hola Marybel!

Very simple advice: get the winter stuff in summer and the summer stuff in the cold time!!! And maybe pay a little bit more that time but when you can really use it the next ten years and do not have to get new stuff every two years it will pay off in the long run... Ask dog owners wich brands will last...they know!!!

But with the seasonal changes in offerings in shops you might not find much in the "wrong" season.

When in the USA, one of the main places I turned to when living in colder climates (like Chicago) are thrift stores and consignment shops. One has to search through both the good and the bad, it takes a little time. But, one can find something REALLY good, for a very low price (which can also be environmentally friendly to buy used, as an extra bonus). Some people give away old coats that are still very high quality. Maybe their body had changed to a different size, or they have changed their fashion, etc. To be extra fancy, one can just take a used coat from the thrift store to a dry cleaner, and it will feel & smell nearly new. Are thrift shops and consignment places at all common in Germany? In the USA, thrift shops are for all sorts of people. People who have financial need, college students & grad students, hippies and eco-conscious people, people who like funky fashion or more vintage clothes ... all sorts!

We do have second hand shops as well. But we would argue they are not as common or popular as in the US. Maybe in Berlin they are more popular 😇

@@simplegermany Thank you! One more question: are disposable hand warmers popular in Germany? I use them everyday here in Ohio USA. :)

I also had same experience but not in Germany but in Shanghai, I came from Peru and my first winter I suffered cause Shanghai is humid and in winter some days it would 0 , -2 degrees in morning and I was living near the ocean. But after I got quite accostumed...idk how to say my body stop feeling cold 🥶, like later winters I didn't almost had to wear double pant as first time. So, did the same happen to you , do you feel less cold in winter, more adapted? My Germans friends have told me that there is cold but is not humid so it doesn't feel that cold.

Yeah in Germany the air is quite dry in winter. However, it feels cold every year, no adapting on my part 😅
