If you found this video useful, I’ve also made another video where I go into more detail about my outer layers and the various options you can consider depending on weather conditions. Here is a link to that video if you would like to watch: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YVXfmCsnQeg.html
Now i know how to stay warm. I will always know how to dress in winter. I am so glad I have someone I know have a RU-vid channel and my dad has been on it. Thx for starting the channel you have done well. 😀🥰
Thanks guys. Glad you found the video useful. I hope Santa brings you some nice new hiking gear. I’ve got no chance as my wife has now banned me from spending any more money on hiking gear 🙈😆
Don’t blame you Chris. There something quite nice about cold winter adventures, providing you have the right kit to keep you warm. Hope you manage to get out soon 👍
Interesting video, Anthony. I tend to be a bit of a cheapskate when it comes to clothing, but as you say, you can still follow the same layering principle and not spend too much. Only thing I use that you didn't mention is a pair of gaiters. The rule of thumb is - wear the gaiters and it rains all day, bring the overtrousers and it will keep the rain away 😊
Thanks Des. I think you’re spot on. There is plenty of good quality hiking gear at bargain prices. Even though I buy the branded stuff these days, it’s always stuff that’s in the sales. I’m too tight to pay full price. I’ve just purchased some gaiters. I’ve never really fancied wearing them but my walking trousers were so ditched after Sunday’s walk, I decided to give them a go
@@2wheelsrbest327 Mine have side zips, and they can be a bit of a pain to get the zip started. Certainly find it easier now than when I first got them 😁
Dead right about the cotton T shirts. I remember walking up Pen y fan in the Brecon Beacons in minimal visibility and howling wind and rain. I had great gear and waterproofs however I was wearing a cotton T shirt that day. By the time I reached the top I was soaked through! Base layers are essential!
Very true Ben. I’ve made a similar mistake myself. It’s not a pleasant experience when the chill sets in when you stop, that’s for sure. Thanks very much for watching
I'd say some incredible kit there Anthony. I mean maaan Arcteryx and Rab. Can't go wrong with any of that gear. Yeah your head loses between 7-10 % of total body heat so that's substantial and feels more in fact when exposed. Anyway, thanks for sharing. Keep going. Mark
Thanks Mark. I’ve definitely become a bit of a gear geek over the last 18 months. I really like my Arcteryx stuff but as I’m a tight northerner, I get everything from their outlet which is mostly half price. I was in 2 minds about doing this video as I didn’t want it to put people off hiking as everyone’s budgets and needs are different. I gave all my old gear away to friends so I couldn’t use some cheaper examples. Hopefully the message about the various layers has come across as that was my intention
@@AnthonyJohnson1 A pleasure Anthony. Well it's beyond my budget. It's funny that I'm working on a project to supply gear to the poor. Send your gear my way next time the reserve. Not gonna give the name just now. Peace dude.
Thanks very much. You are spot on there. I only ever bought cheaper stuff until recently. I get a lot of use out of it these days so it was a worthwhile investment
Hi Anthony - wow you have some brilliant kit. My kit is still in development using what I have before investing in more. I will invest more if I become more of a real hill Walker in wild country and less of a day tripper 😂
Hi Richard. It took me quite a few years as I waited until I started going out more regularly before spending more money on kit. Not sure if you’ve checked out my Ashover video yet but there’s a little plug for your channel on that video. I hope a few of my viewers pop over and watch your videos as I really enjoy them so I think they will too 😀
@@AnthonyJohnson1 thanks Anthony- you obviously love what you do and have so much experience to share. Thank you so much for the mention it’s really appreciated 👍
Really useful info, I've been looking at getting some decent gloves so will have a look! I've heard great things about Darn Tough, but haven't quite got round to investing!
Hi Tom. It’s definitely been gloves weather of late. I’d highly recommend Darn Tough socks. They’re not the cheapest but I definitely think you’ll get many years of use out of them. I’ve had mine 6 months now and worn them a lot and they still look like new.
Haha. I envy you to be honest as I really feel the cold. It would also have saved me quite a bit of money as well if I could get away with less layers. 😂.
Damn it Anthony. Now I want some more gear. The Rab Photon Pro is very appealing. Love Rab kit. Between them and Montane is where most of my salary goes 😂 Great video but I blame you if my cats go hungry because I can’t afford to feed them 😜
Haha. Sorry Rob. You started this though with your gear videos 😂. I think you’d really like the Photon Pro. It’s extremely warm and fits over several layers without any bother. I’ve got a down coat but I’m always worried about ruining it in the hills when the weather changes. I’ve had nothing else to spend my money on since lockdown so I’ve taken advantage and got some new kit. Running out of wardrobe space though and testing the wife’s patience now though so that’s it for a while 😂
Absolutely Sean. I’ve built my collection up over a number of years. For the first few years, I spent very little as I only went out occasionally. The principle of layering is what is most important as that will keep you warm and dry which is the most important thing, not spending loads on the branded stuff. Great to hear you’re getting into hiking 👍
Some good gear there Anthony. I have a few similar items. The kynamite fleece is bomb proof but I find it too warm. For winter I get my paramo gear and merino base layers out. I walk warm so tend to try and manage with two layers. I was tempted recently to purchase a arcteryx hard shell but resisted...have you tried any Paramo kit? Cheers Paul.
Hi Paul. I’m the opposite to you in that I tend to feel the cold, although I do very quickly warm up so I always take that into account. I’ve not tried Paramo kit yet but I’ve heard some very good things, particularly how warm it is. I’m under strict instructions from the wife not to buy any more walking gear for a while 😆. Thanks for watching Paul 👍
Hello. It’s the Mountain Equipment mereno fleece. Here’s a link to the ME website, although I’d shop around as you’ll get it a lot cheaper elsewhere 👍 www.mountain-equipment.co.uk/products/moreno-jacket
I know the feeling ☺️ I've been upgrading my hillwalking and camping gear this year . Lockdown is stopping me testing it properly 😜...I'll subscribe to you
@@petermccarthy4822 that’s very kind of you Peter. Appreciate the support. I’ll do a few more gear reviews etc in the new year which will hopefully be of interest. I hope the restrictions are eased soon so you can get back out camping. Let’s hope 2021 brings some better times 👍
That's a lot of money with all that arcteryx gear alone. I've got their base layers but have the Berghaus equivalents in jackets at half time price. Good video though. 👍
Thanks Craig. I tend to get my Arcteryx gear from their outlet site as can be half price on most items. Berghaus certainly make some great stuff too. I’ve got some of their fleeces and wear them all the time. Thanks for watching 👍
My job is to climb the large electricity pylons and every time I climb back down my cotton t shirt underneath is soaking wet with sweat,I think I need a Baselayer. This is in the winter I mean.
Sounds like one may help. They do wick away the sweat and keep you warm and comfortable when you’re working hard. Cotton takes an age to dry which tends to make it unsuitable for more strenuous activities
In the UK mountains, the temperature is often between 0 and 5 during the winter months. With windchill, the feel like temperature can sometimes be as low as -12. As long as I’ve got something wind proof as an outer layer then I’m usually quite comfortable provided I’m moving. Thanks for watching 👍
Can you compare the warmth of the Rab Photon Pro to any other jackets? I'm after a really warm synthetic jacket as I can't always use my down jackets. I'm after the warmest synthetic jacket possible!
Hi George. It’s certainly the warmest synthetic jacket I’ve owned. I’d probably compare it to a mid-weight down jacket in terms of warmth. If you’re after the warmest synthetic jacket out there, I’d try the Mountain Equipment Citadel. It’s probably got close to twice the amount of insulation as the Photon Pro so it’s a bit of a beast. I haven’t tried it myself but I know someone who owns one and he’s used it in the harshest of the Scottish winters
@@AnthonyJohnson1 what a jacket it is! Mine arrived today. Just been out in light - moderate rain for a walk in this and my Rab Alpha flux hoody and I was really warm and stayed completely dry! Seems a great alternative to wearing a down jacket.
@@ipodgooroo it sure is George. It goes in my bag for every winter hike so I can put it in over my layers when I stop for lunch. It certainly keeps the warmth in.
Thanks for watching Charlie. I find burly down jackets like Canada Goose are too warm for hiking in the UK. I prefer a layering system with a warm coat to pop on when I stop for lunch etc.
