There are few actors as widely beloved as Tom Hanks. Hanks has acted in over 75 films in his 46-year career, winning the best actor Academy Award two years in a row, for “Philadelphia” and “Forrest Gump.” And more recently, he’s the author of the short story collection “Uncommon Type (www.penguinrandomhouse.com/bo...) ” and the novel “The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece (www.penguinrandomhouse.com/bo...) .”
What is the source of Hanks’s near-universal admiration? In playing roles including Chesley Sullenberger, Mister Rogers and World War II heroes, Hanks reflects back to audiences what we could be at our very best. He’s an uncannily wise interpreter of America: what our country has been, and what it could be if we activated our potential to be kind, compassionate, even heroic toward one another.
That’s just one of many topics we traverse in this truly delightful conversation. We also discuss how working on typewriters helps fuel Hanks’s creativity, why there’s such a huge global appetite for superhero stories, why America has become so cynical and how Hanks endeavors to defy that cynicism, how Hanks’s complicated family upbringing influences how he approaches his film roles, what America learned about itself - and didn’t - through Vietnam, Watergate and other historical events, how Hanks understands the complexity of heroic figures he’s played, why he views kindness as an active practice and more.

Using a typewriter is a art in connection to personal studies and dialogue. The same machine is a science in connection to ideas that will last long after one decade or longer. Which may be why Tom Hanks enjoys working on a typewriter on a daily basis .

I learned early in life that typing changes the way I think and communicate, slowing me down and making me think before I write in my hunt and peck incompetence. A sense of permanence is a perfect way to put it.

Mr. Rogers did occasionally talk about things like prayer, I remember in one episode he shared a prayer he learned as a child before going to bed. But he was a liberal Presbyterian, and his religion was low key.

But there's no spellcheck on a typewriter so my writing would be gobbledygook! 😂😂

Granted that some people have too much integrity to go into politics, much less run for President of the U.S. But imagine if Tom Hanks was the President. Finally we would have a person of integrity and intelligence who would be able to inspire Americans to be their best. So different from petty immature 45.

Listen to the interview and then you might find out. An interview is not the headlines or the clickbate any more than any other source of information. It’s actually a very interesting interview with an intelligent man that has been very successful in his career spanning decades… a success that requires the ability to observe, understand, interpret and deliver character arcs and stories. To me, at least, that is something more interesting than most of the self righteous ideologues trolling the modern idea-space 😉

From a very young age this man had to raise himself and manage himself almost totally absent of parental guidance and care. He was under privileged. At 8 years old riding around on buses alone just to keep himself interested but still feeling alone. Interacting with random strangers, some good some bad. Some who cared and some who didn't give a damn. He learned everything from that hard young life and he learned about society from the grass-roots. Who can't be moved by that.

You are obviously a poor judge of character. The reason TH has cred is he is not financially tied to his cultural and political beliefs, but thinks so clearly. Pundits may love their chosen profession, but in the end, they are in it for the money. Tom Hanks is a citizen philosopher, something we could use more of in the phony society we live in.
