Hey Kevin, we understand you're looking for some context on battery modification. We've copied and pasted this on a few threads so apologies for the impersonal nature of the note but it's important for folks to understand!!

It is fundamentally unsafe to modify the battery or battery management system of a Onewheel. We get that a small minority of Onewheel fans are agitated about this so let's unpack it a bit. Onewheels are dynamically stabilized vehicles designed for on- and off-road use. Unlike a car with 4 wheels, there is no margin for error. People ride them on all kinds of terrain in an incredibly demanding fashion so battery modules and the BMS must be built with the highest levels of safety and quality control to withstand a heck of a lot of abuse. We source the highest level components, we've engineered an incredibly robust battery module design and have invested heavily in advanced test fixtures for quality control of all aspects of the battery system. We also have the engineers who designed the Onewheel battery system design a battery management system from scratch to ensure the highest level of battery safety in all situations. This battery management system is designed specifically to work with the battery cells and pack incorporated in Onewheel and no other cells or pack arrangements. So what's the problem with letting anyone in their garage create their own battery and plug it into the board This is not like getting an oil change, both in the level of complexity nor in the level of risk associated. The same lithium battery technology that enables high power and long range means the cells contain tremendous amount of energy potential and must bee handled with utmost caution. The steaks are high, first and foremost for rider safety. Boards with modified batteries are notorious for having battery issues - this according to riders. Best case the board breaks. Worst case the board breaks and the rider gets injured. Worst, worst case the board lights on fire while riding or burns down someones house. If we zoom out, it's also important to note that the light electric vehicle space is still in its early days and regulation and public perception is far from mature and established. We all want the Onewheel experience to be great for everyone and part of the future. Battery fires from modified boards could be catastrophic to efforts to Onewheel acceptance. If your board needs a replacement pack, we provide that service at our repair facility, using brand new OEM cells and parts. Hey Norman, I think folks are missing the mark a bit on this. We've seen a small percentage of issues on initial GT's and offering those folks a very high level of service. Our support team has done a tremendous job getting people back on the road. Modifying Onewheel batteries is a whole different can of worms but I can assure you, we don't dissuade you from doing it in order to make your life miserable. @@Onewheel Again, nothing but love... But you making the decision for us about a thing we own isn't customer service. If we choose to modify our property, we assume the risks, and you shouldn't have a say in it after we purchase it. We're paying for a board, not a parent.

@Onewheel We've all read the comment. I don't think people are accepting your excuse. You might want to consider publishing a very detailed report or video explaining exactly why it is so important to brick the board when you unplug the battery. Otherwise, the "safety" explanation is not going to sell.

@@Onewheel The safety problem is legitimate, but you’ve chosen the laziest, most anti-consumer way to address it. Not to mention you are suing the people going through the work to engineer a solution. Maybe there’s some plan for the future to ramp up 3rd party parts or services, but at this point we have to judge intentions by actions.

Battery is a wear item in ANY electrical device. and WEAR ITEMS has to be SERVICABLE. you are worse than apple when it comes to r2r, at least they just say that its a counterfeit batter not destroy the whole device. I dont know the laws but if i remember correctly, intentially designing a software to damage/hinder/destroy the product is illegal. Oh btw "Safety" has been deemed an unacceptable point when it comes to r2r.

We all know that's crap! the safest onewheels were unlocked. In fact it being locked is actually more of a safety hazard cause maintenance can't be done and FM has habit of refusing to repair boards that someone paid lots of money for....

in all honesty, while their anti consumer practices are very annoying, the product itself is still very fun, and they also do care for the community to some extent. i cant understand why they wont let us tinker with our boards, but we have come to the point where there are workarounds. you can always vesc and build your own onewheel that will outpace anything FM makes currently. just food for thought!

Hey there, a small percentage of GT owners have had any issues. The vast majority are out there loving GT life which has been really awesome to see. We're proud of the work our support staff has done to get anyone with any issue back on the road quickly. If you've got a GT on the way, you should be really excited - it's epic!

The first one I did I sped up to like 150% so it'd go quicker and everyone got all mad thinking I'm trying to look like I ride really fast (and the pedestrians speed walk) so now I just do the 'don't waste too much of your life' PSA :)

Yea, we got into watching ambient videos of Shibuya Crossing in Tokyo. Like 3 hours of people crossing the street. It's the most boring and amazing thing at the same time.

I believe it is due to the salt. I've recently tried to ride my XR on the beach and was unable to up until I was only a couple feet from the water. I haven't heard anything about what you're talking about with the bearings though

Lmfao you the only one dude. I have 11,000 miles on one single XR. Pushback was fine. Big difference in loving onewheel and being a mindless fan boy who somehow agrees with their illegal practices of digital locks. You want a confidence machine? Well GTs are bricking all over the place and ghosting all over the place.

Contrary to what some would like you to believe, we think the vast majority of folks out there really appreciate GT pushback and the general sense of power, control and security the board gives you. I know I do! Cheers Keto

@@Onewheel Yea as an og pint guy and soon to be GT owner. I'm definitely thankful at least for me for the stronger pushback. I understand some of the complaints from more competitive riders about the pushback, but I'm happy to say with over 600+ miles I've never nosedived once on my og pint. For myself I'm happy to see a bit stronger pushback on the GT, but that's my perspective.
