This is awsesome! The old adage says the first pen costs $1,000 and this video shows that it doesn't have to cost quite that much.

Tip for slightly beyond the "beginner" stages: After you've spent some time (and not a lot of money) using sandpaper to smooth out your pens, and you decide to continue turning, ditch the sand paper for Abranet or similar mesh-backed abrasives. It doesn't clog up like sandpaper, and you use WAAAY less of it.

Great information for a new turner. Another tip is buying a starter pack of pen kits. They come with at least 4 pen kits, the drill bit and bushings. I did this when I first started.

My late Uncle was a wood worker for close to 60 plus years and I inherited most of his shop and tools and one box had a brand new unused Mini Pen Lathe with all the tools and Chucks along with boxes and boxes of Pen blanks of all types of wood both foreign and domestic plus several more boxes of Pen kits still in the bags. I have a nice 2 car garage to start my shop up in the Spring if I can just get the initial want of making some Pens and other things because I also have more wood and slabs then I can store. I'm almost 70 now which is a good time to get started but will end up giving or selling a lot of these woods.

DO NOT WASTE MONEY ON ALL THE JIGS! Get the jaws for drilling on the Lathe. works great. -Use brad point bits for drilling. I am about to replace all the bits to them for pens. -Band Saw is great, but you can get a hand saw. -I have EWT now, but I started with cheap carbide from Amazon. 3 tools for $40 bucks. I think I have finally been able to square up all my tools (Band Saw, Sander, etc.) So no special jigs are needed.

Thank you for the information on tools. I’m just getting into turning and see there are tons of different priced tools. It’s great to know I don’t have to spend a ton of $$ on them to get a great finished result. My question is should I or can I use wet wood to turn pens. Folks on RU-vid recommend wet wood for various projects like bowls but no one has mentioned wet or dry for pen and bottle stoppers. Thanks
@RJBWoodTurner
@RJBWoodTurner 9 месяцев назад
Hello, I would not recommend wet wood for pens. Once thinned, it will dry quickly and split apart. Get a cheap toaster oven and a gram scale. Weigh the wood then cook it the at 110 to 120 degrees for 30 minutes. Weigh it again and repeat until it stops losing weight. At that point it’s dry enough to use. Regards, Bob

Thanks so much! Can you recommend an inexpensive lathe
@RJBWoodTurner
@RJBWoodTurner 6 месяцев назад
A lathe is a lathe, all they do is spin wood. With that being said, you get what you pay for. I have used Harbor Freight lathes and they work even though there are issues with alignment between the head and tail stocks. I would recommend joining a club in your area. You learn about what other members use and maybe go to their shops and try their lathe. Also, as they upgrade, they usually offer their old lathe to the club members. You can get a really good used lathe at a reasonable price. Regards, Bob

Another good video Bob, I love that you are trying to lower the cost of entry to potential new pen turners. One idea to add.... if you don't want to use a clamp for pen assembly and don't want to invest in a pen press, how about Penn State's Between Centers Pen Press (PKLPRESS) for your lathe? At only $18 it is awesome. I have tried 3 different pen presses (PSI, Milescraft and one I made myself) and I have to say, honestly, I like using this Penn State between centers the best. It gives me more control than anything else. Perhaps you could link to it in your description.
@RJBWoodTurner
@RJBWoodTurner Год назад
I initially had some footage about purchasing some HDPE and turning a couple press blocks then pressing on the lathe. I was hoping most people would have a clamp if they were doing any type of woodworking. Just fighting to keep that cost down. Regards, Bob
@davidbondi
@davidbondi Год назад
@@RJBWoodTurner That makes sense Bob for the initial stage of keeping cost to an absolute minimum. I actually saw a video where a maker used a mallet to assemble a pen, he made it work, but I can only imagine how many pens I would split trying that. I should have been more clear that my point was that when the time comes when a new pen turner is ready to move to the next level and spend more money, my personal choice would be to not purchase a pen press (given my less than satisfactory experiences with them). I would save the money and get the between centers press from PSI. It is all I use now.

@Matthews_Media
@Matthews_Media 24 дня назад
@@RJBWoodTurner Yeah another problem here seems to be that there aren't many "brand" name chucks (For cheap anyways)... The problem that causes, is that you can't find a set of pen jaws that match that specific model. I'm looking into buying a collet chuck to hold my pens instead. Although that limits me to a max diameter of 20mm... Thoughts?
@RJBWoodTurner
@RJBWoodTurner 24 дня назад
Yeah, you end up having to turn a tenon on your blanks to use the chuck. I do get better results with a collet chuck though. Regards, Bob
