"not much to show for" as you stand in front of a huge pile of beautiful molding exactly what your wife wants. I think that is a lot more then others can say they got done in a weekend. I have to agree with Sarah I really like the profile of the molding.

It's a learning curve, Lucas. The only difference between a novice and a master is that the master has already made every mistake possible, and has learnt how to correct it.

600 pages of research, a custom set of tools to make the perfect profile, and then hours of trial and error to teach yourself how to do it. That is such incredible attention to detail and such care and craftsmanship that you would NEVER be able to find in a new house. This house is going to be so incredible, and it might seem like there's not much to show for this weekend, but from the outside looking in, that is seriously impressive.

Dude, I've been watching your journey since episode 14. Lucas, you're doing a masterful job. I say this as a guy with 50 years of woodworking experience - both for a living and as a hobby. You're doing something most hobby woodworkers never get the opportunity to do, and using equipment most folks can only dream of renting, let alone owning. You'll have setbacks, and you'll have "learning experiences." You'll make mistakes, and you'll wish you'd never started this. You'll have major and minor victories, and you'll be seriously pumped when you do. Then you'll look at it when it's up on the wall, painted, finished, you'll see the smile on your wife's face, and you'll not regret a second of what you're doing now. You're not defeated - you're learning a new skill. Seize the opportunity, and continue to hold the high standards you've already set for yourself. I have faith in you. And yeah - pine is sticky, nasty stuff - forever. The oils and resins in pine will never go away. I use VM&P naphtha to clean bits and blades as a matter of course, and especially whenever I have to work with pine.

Bless your heart, I'm SO glad you weren't hurt. I understand how you could feel defeated but you've come a long way. Just think of the research you guys have put into the process of making your own moulding, and how cool and unique it will be when you're done. I can only imagine in 100 years when someone is remodeling the home , they'll look at it and talk about how it is custom moulding and wonder what kind of artist took the effort to make it...and they'll carefully take pains to restore it and pay homage to your artistry. I'm sure the Mona Lisa wasn't painted in 1 day, and neither will your masterpiece. I also really do like what you've done thus far and look forward to the finished result. Take a deep breath, and marvel at what you've already done, because we are! Stay safe!

I really can't commend you enough for how long & often you've been putting yourself outside your comfort zone in renovating this house, especially for someone who has a keen attention to detail. I am an amateur woodworker myself and trying new things can be intimidating despite your best research because if you fail at any point in a process, you've failed despite how far into it you've come. You may never want to renovate a house again after you "finish" (lol), but it's been cool to see you grow into such a competent tradesman. Hats off to you man. I've been tuning in regularly for almost a year, and I plan on sticking around until you've seen this project through (and beyond).

Sarah chose a lovely design and it will be one more thing that makes your house a step above the average renovation. Most people would just buy something that looks similar to what they have in mind. This will be spot on. Thanks for taking us along on this journey and I'm so thankful you didn't get hurt on that kickback. Have a Blessed day.

Focus on that and the personal touches it will leave for everyone to enjoy. You are doing that home so much justice by paying attention to the details and putting craftsmanship back into it! It took craftsmanship to build it in 1806, why shouldn't it deserve the same in 2021! Beautiful work as always Lucas!!!!!

Defeated? Look at all that you have accomplished! From day one you have been on a journey of doing something you had no clue how to do, now here you are! You have a house that people who have been building for years could be jealous of. Every journey has its hills, valleys, boulders and pebbles, you have knocked down every hill built up every valley shattered every boulder and kicked every pebble to the side and have created something that has become quite amazing. Your kids and Sarah have a person who they can honestly look up to and admire and can say this man, my husband or my daddy built us this home(not house) and he wasn't defeated by his lack of knowledge or experience he pushed through and he defeated his lack of knowledge and experience. And because they and everyone who watches see this you have inspired those of us who were scared to try new things. You have showed us if we really want something we have to power through and defeat whatever was holding us back. So to say you feel defeated sir at this moment only makes it better when we see you defeat this feeling and show just how awesome this will be. You sir are not defeated you are a Conqueror!

I am not surprised that complex adjustment was needed to get the machine and wood all set to the correct sizes. You have chosen some complex objectives as the output and not the novice entry scheme. It takes time, effort and considerable concentration allied to a level of detail work that sorts the master from the hacker. Well done for mastering the journey. While the machine does much of the grunt work, the master is needed to tell it what is wanted and how to do the task. Your task at the start was to be both the teacher and student, from what I have seen you have learned, applied yourself perfectly, producing work to make you proud and your wife, Sarah, happy. You are now a master of the machine, and it will serve you well, I salute your mastery.

It’s amazing how well that dust collection works with the motor so far away. As far as your mishap goes: Glad nobody was hurt, and your hole is an easy repair. Get some Durbond or fast set drywall mud and prefill the hole with that, then paper tape over it. It will dry harder than the original drywall and after it dries, skim coat the top. Light sand and you’re good to paint.

Yes! You have to make a plywood or particleboard platform and clamp it to the table with the runner guides mounted to it. In the thirty years of making cabinets with raised panel doors or regular moldings for historical homes I’ve never had to adjust those rollers for anything. They came factory set and I’ve never adjusted them. On most historical baseboards they are in two or three different thickness and widths of boards. Never used that back board knife on any of my moldings.

Thank you!! I was ready that the pine was the “issue” with my rollers? Seems to be sticking.. I hope, it’s the last time. I’m going to see if I can find some more information about the platform and how it should look.. very good!

My son had a Shop Fox moulder in his shop for a few years. He put a power feeder on it which helped with the feed issues. That said, the machine has its limits, and you might be pushing them with what your trying to do. Any type of a shaper is a dangerous machine to use. But the bigger ones with lots of power, and when equipped with a power feed can actually be safer to use. The attractive thing about these types of machines is of coarse the initial cost. There are several other similar types but a bit of an upgrade over the one you have. But also considerably higher in price. My son bought one after selling the Shop Fox. He returned it a few days after it was delivered to his shop.

Very glad you were not hurt! Hope you get out of the defeated feeling, you do so much and take such care to make it great!

I hate to hear you say you feel defeated...you are not, have not and will not be defeated! I tell my son, Life is Like a Rollercoaster. Ups and downs, my friend. I’m betting on you!

I'm surprised you haven't come up with a unique way to use those VALUABLE shavings instead of dumping them outside 😊 Sounds like the moulding/trim is going to be gorgeous...excited to see it installed.

There's a lot to show for in there I think. Look at all the trim boards you've cut!!! Nice work Lucas!!

Don't feel defeated. You did a lot. You are still learning the machine and molding is a pain in the rear. Multiple passes, multiple adjustments enormous time killers.

You did so much this weekend! Learnt a lot about a new tool, made all of those door mouldings and cheated death.
