Over 5 episodes, "The Truth About the Dissolution of the Monasteries," series with Professor James Clark, hosted by Philippa of the British History Channel, discusses in fascinating detail, how the dissolution unfolded.
Episode 3 - What was the Valor Ecclesiasticus?
In this episode we explore what the Valor Ecclesiasticus was for, why is was produced and the problems with creating it.
"If I walked through my town in 1536 what would I have seen? The Valor tells us!"
"The dissolution was not a high political story, its value is in understanding what happened in the communities and in the kingdom."
For decades we have understood the Dissolution of the Monasteries, which took place in the late 1530's during the reign of Henry VIII, in a short hand, summarised and sanitised version of events. Professor James Clark, in his book 'The Dissolution of the Monasteries. A New History' published by Yale University Press in 2021, looks at how the dissolution unfolded for the ordinary people and exposes the received history and its short hand explanations of the process as way too simple and, in many ways, inaccurate
Episodes in this series
Episode 1 - Henry VIII's real intention for the Monasteries of England and Wales
Episode 2 - How the Pilgrimage of Grace may have led to the more monasteries being closed
Episode 3 - What was the Valor Ecclesiasticus?
Episode 4 - What really happened when a monastery was closed
Episode 5 - "Even in 1539, they still don’t believe the end is coming"
There is a bonus hour with James in which he discusses what Anne Boleyn thought about the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the fundamental lack of consistency in Henry's ideas on religion, and what happened to the women ejected at the closure of the religious institutions, among many other fascinating topics. How are you doing mrs philippa and dr James . Iam Arabic lady subscriber to several British and American RU-vid channels. I didn’t send comments to you from very long time since last year . Iam very happy to be subscriber in your wonderful cultural documentary channel. We are as foreigners subscribers as overseas students want to increase our cultural level improve our English language as well. First of all I looked up for meaning of ecclesiastical there are two books of bibles Ecclesiastes, which within canized scripture was written by king Solomon and this is new American standard version: Ecclesiasticus , from apocryphal “ hidden books “ , was written by man named Jesus sirach, this is King James Version. Dissolution of monasteries was survey of finances of church in England, Wales , English controlled parts of Ireland made in 1535 on orders of Henry v111.

Last part of my research so he would know how much wealth of church had in England and Wales and how much he could get his hands. Compilation of valor Ecclesiasticus good working office copy covering all monastic and church property in south England including london .dissolutions of monasteries many former monasteries were sold off to landowners, others were taken over and became churches such as Durham cathedral. Many were left to ruin , such as tintern abbey, few monks who resisted were executed, but those who surrendered were paid or pensioned off . The main reason of dissolution of monasteries because monasteries owned over quarters of all cultivated land in England by destroying monastic system Henry could acquire all it wealth and property whilst removing papist influence idea is not new . Thomas Cromwell had already helped cardinal Wolsey dissolve monasteries in past . How hope you like my research. Best wishes for you your dearest ones.
