Dave Grohl is powerful singer, a great songwriter and a confident front man. In this lesson, I discuss and demonstrate two huge aspects of Dave's singing that any singer or aspiring singer can use to improve their voice, confidence and singing presence!

I love this channel. It's such a functionalist approach to vocals. As a rock vocalist, I really damaged my voice before I figured out how to get the sound of throat tearing force, without actually slapping my throat parts together in a destructive way. It permanently reduced my range and control. I wish I had a resource like this 15 years ago. Keep up the great work you're doing.

This happened to me, and it sucked. It was like I forgot how to sing, and had to start over. My voice improved in my opinion after it though. Probably because afterwards I paid more attention to how I was singing. This channel helped me become a better rock vocalist as well.

Just subscribed to your channel. Why? “Embrace the yell.” “Most people have never let their inhibitions go when it comes to their voice.” And you’re extremely brave for revealing something so intimate and personal as singing freely without hesitation. And the examples you use, Chris Cornell, Layne Staley etc, are not represented enough. Simply brilliant. Thank you!

Hit the nail on the head, dude! I've been practicing singing in my room for 3 years almost and I just sang my heart out, and I've started to be able to control it. Just sing with all you have and don't think about what others might think. If it sounds good to you, good. You'll be able to feel your way through it. If your throat starts to hurt, then hold back and think about how you're singing. Other than that, sing with EVERYTHING you have.

I can't fully express how grateful I am for your channel, but this video especially. I've spent almost 2 decades trying to sound like the best rock vocalists. Some pretty successfully, others have remained impossible, like Grohl's fry screams. Hearing an expert like you, who also studies and has true, deep appreciation for these artists and their work, explain why imitation is a losing game, might genuinely save my voice and sanity in the long run.

Another great video, I love how you take inspiration from others singers techniques. These videos deserve loads more views!!! I briefly flirted with this song in the past but backed off for fear of hurting my voice (that was a while back). These days I suffer from a lot of vocal tension. I got scoped a few months back thinking I had nodes but the guy said it was just tension causing my pain. Refereed me to speech training, still waiting on it. It don't help I work in retail and have to talk all day. Weirdly I think if I sang and spoke with more passion/gusto/umph like this my throat would be in better condition - I often mumble B¬} If you've got anymore of these in the pipe line I'd love to see I breakdown of Nick Oliveri and or Jeff Buckley!!

Hi, Chris. I've been seeing your videos for a few weeks and I still can't make it to Dave Grohl's songs. I can reach a F4, but not the F#4 in Everlong (it's like I sing it ok until that note, where I can just do head voice - that it is not so cool in such song ). Neither the G#4 in Best of You. Neither in My Hero. I've been reflecting a lot and thinking, but can't make it. I get the point of these video - being energetic in singing - but will I ever be abel to get those songs right? You do get Best Of You with such power and not like mikey mouse voice as I get in F#4 and beyond. How do I do it? I've really saw loads of your videos, but still not good in those right notes.

I like most of your videos but this one has little practical advice unless you're coaching someone who is already a very good singer but lacks the ability to get wild. The only thing separating Dave Grohl from 99% of people watching is not just "confidence"... It's at least 30 years of already being a great singer. If it was as simple as letting go and being a rock n rolla then who would need you to teach them techniques? :P
@chrisliepe
@chrisliepe 3 года назад
I agree with you on this video. This isn't one of my typical "dissect the techniques of a singer" And I've done a ton of those since releasing this video. The point here really is that "letting go" is what most of these guys did to discover their vocal potential... not by studying formal voice training. But given the context and my other videos, I can see how this one feels a bit incomplete.
