Doesn’t help that the word for mermaid in a lot of other languages is some variation of the word siren

Also sirens later became about their song in of itself and tempting men in a sexual way with their beauty, but originally they just held great knowledge that people REALLY wanted, and that is how they would essentially be ensnared, needing to know more (and it doesn't seem the sirens would eat them, either. They just rotted away). It is funny to think of the original depictions as being these sexy seductresses though, because they were literally a completely anatomical bird, except with the head of a beautiful woman lol. In later versions (when they started being depicted as sexually desirable) they did acquire the torso of a woman, though, so as them boobas could do some work (and then later depictions had just had wings on the back and bird feet and that was all). Then the Christians came along and it just turned into a straight-up mermaid for whatever reason. People also say that sirens are then just harpies, but these 2 are not at all the same thing. Especially with the original depictions found on a LOT of pottery from the time (since Homer didn't actually say what they looked like in the Odysseus story).
