Unfortunately, many US grocery stores hide the fact that they use a garbage disposal to get rid of old produce that they deem to be unfit for sale. I discovered this 40 years ago when I worked as an independent rep giving out free samples of freshly squeezed Orange Juice in large grocery store chains in California. I was shocked to see such massive amounts of perfectly good food being shoved into the sink for "disposal". I always thought they were donating it to local farmers to feed to their livestock! Seems the US has been hiding this dirty little secret for far too long.
What's shocking is that people like you think this is still how they do things despite you admitting your experience was from 40 years ago. Things have changed believe it or not. Food doesn't just get thrown away unless it's a health hazard. Food at my local grocery store when damaged or approaching shelf date is given to one of many food donation places for people and animals alike.
@@NChambernator Well, as "shocking" as you may think it is, just last month (Dec 2019)I was talking to a produce manager at my local safeway store & he said they still do things the same way when they feel the need warrants it. They do donate packaged foods & items that are about the expire to their local food bank & shelter. So, not as much is wasted in today's world, but there is still room for improvement. At least it no longer goes straight to the landfill.
@@NChambernator I work for a multi billion dollar grocery chain, they throw away massive amounts of edible food. Cutting food waste needs to be made into law if you want it to be effective

Put dignity into the process and organize to deliver a real meal not just food. Just because someone is hungry it doesn’t mean they don’t deserve dignity and a real meal. Scarcity is not our issue….it’s logistics and a vicious cycle of inability to innovate. Excellent TED Talk sis!!

Sometimes my heart breaks why govt spend trillion and trillion of dollars creating weapon of mass destruction instead of using the money to end global poverty and finding cure for diseases such as HIV,polio,TB,Ebola.What has become of us?
Aside from every thing that she has said, we should be educating ourselves how planting would help in solving this issue as well. Bear in mind the fact that a family who has its own yard, growing fruits and vegetables, would not starve themselves. They would have a great source of food that would make them full and healthy. They would be distancing themselves away from hunger and healing the Mother Earth at the same time.

Yes! We need to stop food waste! I wouldn't say donating cans is a complete waste, but it's definitely not enough. Some food drives do a good job I think while others may not. I agree with you about the need for laws and end of waste. I met guy that never bought a meal for a whole year. He just rode his bicycle around and ate people's leftovers that he found. Another cool thing! Remember when you go to a restaurant to bring your own tupperware or something to take the leftovers with, so you don't have to create extra waste to go in landfills. I try to do it to when I remember!
It's not a matter of logistics, but of profits and profitability. Charity, changing various things, etc. is all great, I'm definitely not saying to stop such efforts! Please continue and spread the word! But there will be hunger, starvation, poverty, etc. etc. so long as capitalism continues to exists, as it is required for capitalism to function.
I worked in Fred Meyers Deli we thew out food every day I'm talking about fried chicken, Mac n cheese, fries , sandwiches ect. They said because of laws and rules they couldn't give it away. I quit.

Its a complicated issue, should people get free food and shelter? then who pays for said food and shelter? why would labors work if they can get food for free? but meanwhile A.I and robots are replacing labor jobs to begin with and soon it would be in the government's interest to give out free food and for corporations to have free job/skill training to keep the economy alive. At the end i'm no expert in this field (or any other) but appreciate people like this woman who do feel good things.
They should get free food and shelter until they can support themselves with a job. If people can't afford to support themselves on their pay then there's a problem with the system, not with the people. Usually either low wages, not enough hours/zero hour contracts, or rent/bills that are waaay too high (which is usually to do with lack of investment into public housing and renewable energy schemes by the govt). It's better for the economy and society in general to prop someone up until they're on their feet and can provide for themselves than let them die or go homeless. And if they're already homeless then it's better for everyone to spend a relatively small amount of money (a few thousand £ or $) to get them clothed, homed, fed and into employment so they can get their life back on track and start contributing to society again.
Some companies don't give food they have left that's good to people like homeless or even customers because they say that they don't wanna get sued incase someone gets sick or has some allergy that they don't know. So i can kinda understand some companys. I used to work at Dunkin donuts and i think at closing time we had to throw away all the donuts that were left. And we couldn't give free donuts to people outside or anything because anyone can sue and cause the company to lose money. But what i did tho- since i felt bad wasting food and throwing donuts away that were in good shape- i would take some donuts home with me and share with family or give to my neighbors who liked them (^:
Imagine if in addition to curbing food waste, if we lived in a society where basic gardening and animal husbandry were taught to children at home and in schools, if everyone with a yard or balcony had a garden, no matter how small, and if every city were filled with edible landscaping (fruit and nut trees, berry bushes, etc), and if public spaces and rooftops had community gardens. Edited to add: mental health is also an issue,. Gardening and harvesting is great therapy
We have tried this and what happens is the greedy people go and take all of the produce that's ripe and sell it... Humans are the root of the problem and always will be.
@@NChambernator people are not universally learning how to grow food and feed themselves. period. but good point, I bet many of the drug induced homeless (like a family member I know) do whatever they can to get cash for their habit instead of making nourishing, life promoting choices. While there still are way too many people living in extreme poverty (821 million people live in hunger according to her), we should recognize that the number was drastically bigger just 30 years ago. 1.85 BILLION lived on less than 1.9 dollars per day in 1990 which has gone down to "just" 736 million (2015). When we look at the world and all the problems it holds, we should also see the positives that are happening. The middle class is bigger than ever. There used to be a large extreme wealth and a large extreme poverty class. Now a huge percentage of that latter one has caught up with the middle class. The issue of hunger needs to be solved, but during the last 30 years for more than a billion individuals it was solved and that's great.
In the UK that's the opposite. The numbers of homeless are skyrocketing, the amount of family in poverty is steadily rising and the middle classes are struggling. Meanwhile those at the top are getting richer and are getting the high paid jobs due to their parent's connections or the private school or obsenely expensive university they went to.
@@sykessaul123 A couple of hopeful aspects - if a person can get to a public library, they can now: watch RU-vid videos and teach themselves how to do - plumbing, carpentry, tiling, car repair, HVAC, etc.. Also, you can sell things through sites such as Ebay, Craigslist, etc.. You can start a business with one good idea and a GoFundMe page. The opportunities to get training, funding & platforms to sell things are expanding.

We need some actual fkn industry that creates jobs and that isn't going to happen with the Tories continuously milking the economy for personal profit.

How about stop rendering PA farm fields worthless with radioactive fracking, weather modification fallout, barium fallout from radio and radar signaling and stop spreading hospital and fracking waste on the fields where they grow food. Numerous farms have ended operation because of fracking alone. If they were still operating, who would want to consume the food that would come from those farms after being fracked?
