What We Tow Behind Our Motorhome | Jeep Gladiator
Today we're Wingin' It! about our new tow car: a 2021 Jeep Gladiator. After flat towing our 1999 Jeep Wrangler behind our motorhome for many years, we have recently replaced it with a Freedom Edition Jeep Gladiator.
Jeep Wranglers make great toads (vehicles towed behind a motorhome). They are very easy to flat tow without a dolly and make a fun vehicle for exploring. While researching Jeep Wranglers, we decided to expand our search to include Jeep Gladiators.
Buying a vehicle and setting it up to be towed behind a motorhome can be a bit complicated, especially in the current market. We talk about why we chose a Jeep Gladiator as our new tow car, how pulling a truck makes things a little more challenging, and some challenges we faced to get the Gladiator ready for towing.

Hey y'all! I think we forgot to mention in the video, but the Jeep Gladiator (Freedom Edition) comes in at just under 6,000 pounds. That would have been too heavy for our Tiffin Breeze to tow, but our Newmar New Aire 3343 has a towing capacity of 10,000 pounds. Always remember to check your weights! Hi. Online search shows Gladiators top out at barely over 5000 pounds. Is the difference customizations or additional storage? I’m very curious as I am looking at a New Aire myself, and will need to choose a toad to go with it. I would love to hear any feedback on performance (especially uphill) while towing. What route did you take over the eastern mountains? Pennsylvania?

There are several different versions of the Gladiator. We have the Freedom Edition which has heavier duty axles, steel bumpers, and a bigger tow package. It tows great behind the motorhome. Hardly know it’s there.We crossed the Smokies via Kentucky - North Carolina.

I have a 21 Gladiator just set up the blue ox tow with base plate, we have the wiring wired up for lights Do I need a toggle switch to turn on and off for lighting (brakes,blinkers, lights) on the Gladiator I’ve watched so many flat tow videos but no one explains the lighting set up

Great video, Stacie and Tom, thank you! Love the color matched motorhome and Jeep! We have a similar setup, a Newmar Dutch Star towing a Jeep Wrangler with the Blue Ox tow bar, great way to tow and really easy to get it rigged. Sorry about the accident that damaged your coach, hope it gets fixed soon and as good as new. I always worry when driving our coach in multi-lane high traffic situations, I see people who seem to drive oblivious to other vehicles on the road, but how someone can miss a big RED motor home is beyond me!!

We tow a Jeep Grand Cherokee behind our motorhome but have looked at the Gladiator because I like the pickup truck features. I was reluctant to buy Jeep because they are poorly rated for reliability by consumer reports but did it anyway because they are so easy to set up for flat towing. Our Jeep has been rock solid for the last 3 years. Absolutely no problems at all. Keep us posted on your experience with the Gladiator. That is top on our list now.

Gladiators are sweet they were just coming out when we bought our Jeep Rubicon. We love our jeep. Our Jeep is "Freedom" and RV is" Liberty" for Liberty and Freedom! We have the Blue-Ox and the Invisi-braking system on our jeep.

I have a Jeep JL and Phaeton with M and G Engineering with Roadmaster Nighthawk tow bar installed by Wilson RV near Columbus OH. We have had no problems and feel that M and G and Wilson RV are great. I learned about M and G through this You tube channel…thanks! And Wilson RV from the M snd G website. Love Y’all

We love your new toad! It is going to make life a lot easier when you have Grammy K with you. The pickup would also have been more useful when you switched RVs and were hauling everything back and forth to storage. Hopefully that's not something you have to do again for a long time! I hope you have your Blue Ox inspected regularly. There has been weld issues on the old units. I have opted to use a trailer but that comes with it's own challenges. The advantage is that I can use any car and the vehicle is protected. The Newmar comes set up ready for using the Air Force 1® but you still need to install it on the towed.

" I have opted to use a trailer but that comes with it's own challenges." Yes I have been in 2 campgrounds that you couldn't store a trailer or tow dolly at your spot. At one you had to pay for a second spot for your trailer. It is much much easier and cheaper to tow 4 down.

@@WILDEBILL308 I've not paid for a second site but have put my trailer in a parking lot. I own 2 good wheel locks. Is it cheaper.4 down? By the time you.pay to have everything put on the towed you spent a lot of money. Then, if you buy a new car, you have to pay again. The trailer protects the car from stones and such. Finally, a base plate on a used car reduces its resale value by 10-20%.

@@roydavis2242 You can can do what ever you want. How much did that trailer cost? I have no damage to my car that can be attributed to being towed. I have removed the full with mud flap because I think it causes turbulence that picks up gravel. Funny I have found it easy to sell a used car set up for towing for more than one that wasn't. I made installing the base plate and wiring harness on my CR-V part of the deal when I bought it. It is still way way easier to tow 4 down.

@@WILDEBILL308 A friend who owns a used car dealership says when he bids on a car set up to be towed at auctions, it always sells for less because the suspension, differential, and other parts are still being used when towed

I have been towing my jeeps for 20 years and I’m sure you are aware that rock damage even with mudflaps from the RV is the worst I really think that you may consider the shield over the front of the new Jeep. Thomyt

Hey Thomyt. We know folks who used a shield and it bounced the rocks onto the back of their motorhome. That’s why we went with the Diamond Shield on the Jeep.

Thank you We met y’all two years ago at Jamaica Beach Had a great visit with you We also toe a Gladiator behind our Class A We also have the same issue getting the Jeep out of Toe Mode Our local Service Manager could not give us an answer on how to properly Take the Gladiator out of toe mode “Don’t worry about it, your not going to hurt the Jeep” We have come up with our own process Is there any way we could get your procedure Thank you and Travel Safe

Some states require it so just with that I would say no. Also, in the event of a disaster if the car comes disconnected for any reason then the car would automatically break so it won’t cause a potential fatal crash, so for me that’s not a waste of money.
