@@people3865 And Nylander took over Game 6. And Matthews refused to let the Leafs lose Game 2. Marner's signature moment was letting Pastrnak skate by him on the OT winner.
My post-mortem analysis: 1) Shanahan failed, plain and simple, and it's time for him to go. Ten years and never during those years did the team get as far as it should have. 2) Matthews overplayed himself out during the last bit of the season, trying to get to that 70 goals mark. When he arrived in the playoffs, he was burned out and probably already had the injury he now claims to have. Matthews thought about his own personal quest for glory instead of his team's. 3) Tavares is done. Nobody talks about him anymore. It's always about Matthews, Marner and Nylander. That's not good, especially when the reason why they initially brought this guy was to add leadership to the team, which leads me to point #4: 4) Have too many stars as forwards and that's what you get. At some point, some years ago, the Leafs had to make a choice, whether or not trade one of their stars to add more stability in front of the goalie. They made the bad choice of keeping them all. There's just too many cooks at the offense and nobody is enough of a leader to take the reigns of this group of players. 5) Marner looked like a whiny little bitch on the bench and it will be difficult for him to get rid of that reputation from now on. Edit: 6) I forgot one thing. I am strong on superstition. As long as the Leafs fans are cocky, unapologetic and unappreciative, the Leafs will be cursed.
That's the funniest thing to me. You literally play in a sport where you're ALLOWED to take your anger/frustration out on opponents ( within limits) and he decides to throw a tantrum on the bench. Like I'd rather he slash someone at this point
I can't believe that you aren't in the NHL ... as a coach, a player or maybe an analyst. You seem to have such deep inside knowledge ... for a minimum wage ham & egger....
Mike Johnson is beating around the bush. He wants to say is Marner isn't cut out for playoff hockey and never will be. Tavares and him have one year left. 2025 is the leafs chance to make real change to their roster until then expect the exact same thing next year.
Maybe paying 5 players who are not playoff performers $50 million per year might not be such a good idea, hey Leafs? Enjoy the early golf season, Maple Leafs!
PP, Woll not starting game 7, and Morgan Rielly being on the ice in a defensive situation. Samsonov stops a lot of shots, but just like James Reimer used to, he lets in bad goals at crucial moments. Mitch Marner has no place on this team.
The series winner wasn't a bad goal let in by Samsonov. You had one of the best in the game alone with him, one on one and Pasta does a great move. I'm surprised Samsonov was right there and even got part of that shot, just not quite enough. If you watch the replay in slow motion, you'll see it was actually close to a miracle save.
@@incumbentvinyl9291 Only thing with the finally goal is Sammy reacted way too late resulting in him having to try to make a spectacular save. He played a decent game but Sammy was never good at controlling the space around his net.
@@DK5TY *final goal He didn't react way too late, look at Pasta's deke. He was still right there and got a piece of the shot. The lesson to be learned here is the following: Do not allow your opponent's best offensive player one on one with your goalie in overtime of game seven. It's that simple. None of this is on Samsonov.
Mike was on point here but they should have added on key detail. Nothing really changed for the Leafs from game 4 to game 7 apart from the goaltending and the fact that either Boston stopped scoring or the Leafs played better defense. But everyone was complaining that in games 1 through 4 Toronto scored 1,3,2 and 1 goal. But in 5, 6 and 7 they scored 2,2 and 1. So he's right on- they can't score when it matters most and that really proves it- win or lose they never scored more than 3 goals and they only managed that many once.
No kidding! Boston lost 4-5 really top grade players from last year and because they have a no nonsense system, a whole bunch of new young rookies just stepped up and did what was needed.
The leafs offence compared to bruins was night & day. Toronto were immediately attacked when they had the puck & instead of finding open players would just dump it into the zone & let Bruins try. Bruins with the puck were speed skating to the net or setting up slap shots. The leafs offensive scheme is garbage when it’s being game planned against in a series by a team who also don’t want to be eliminated. &It’s every team, not just Bruins. They don’t attack the net with breakouts. They don’t set things up, over time, meticulously. It’s like they need to get rid of the puck ASAP for no reason. Playing hot potatoes out there. All their shots are from far away. No screens. Nothing. Nylander is the only dude out there close enough to deke out the goalies. Maybe more of that? Maybe, go play hockey?
Mike Johnson has been cheering on this inept core 4 crap the whole time. Not only is it an anti-hockey strategy, but they TO A MAN overpaid every one of them.
@@jayjayson9613 You would lose all of your credibility by saying that. I was saying this 5 years ago when this crap started. I guess it will take you 10 years to catch up just like MLSE. And people say Toronto is a tough market. 🤣
But that’s expected. It’s not expected from Toronto. Big difference. Toronto is supposed to be a great team, more talent than the bruins. But they look like a mid team, with trash fans who boo them off the ice at home games. Must be something cultural in that city. Makes soft people.
Yeah that's the whole reason the Leafs are being laughed at. Boston has a weak offence. Boston Forwards: 14, total salary spend for 2024: $41,512,500 Toronto Forwards: 15, total salary spend for 2024: $59,714,783 Just comparing the two highest paid forwards. Post Season Pastanak 3 goals 2 assists Post Season Mathews 1 goal 3 assists. In fact the Leafs won twice as many games in this series without Mathews then they did with him on the ice.
Leafs would be advancing if Samsonov didn't let those 2 savable goals in. Nylander stepped up. That goal should have been enough but Samsonpv screwd us again.
Leaf stars are show horses not work horses...big difference. Nies is a combination of both...a true star hockey player (too good to be stuck in Toronto).
Knies may very well, effective after he becomes a restricted free agent, receive from a competing NHL team an offer of a per-season cap hit (PSCH) the Leafs won’t end up matching. That the PSCH of the AM34-Marner-Nylander-Rielly-Tavares quintet this NHL season made up over half the Leafs‘ cap hit -> weather due to lack of playoff point production or cap hit, the time has come for a break-up of that quintet. Whether Keith Pelley, CEO of team ownership group MLSE, agrees with me on the need to terminate the team presidency of Brendan Shanahan, after a 10th season with limited at best playoff success, still remains TBD.
When Sutter was coaching in Boston he said players are like horses. Some you have to coax to work hard, others need the whip. Leafs players have never felt the whip.
5:20 That's the problem, Mike Johnson. The Leafs keep trying to acquire players to make the team tougher, when the issue is that their core 4 are the ones that aren't tough or gritty and willing to go to the hard areas. Marner, Matthews and Tavares where letters on their jerseys and are supposed to be the guys who set the tone, and they don't. They keep hoping that signing guys like Domi, Bertuzzi and Reaves will make up for it, and that's not the case.
That analysis is some of the best I've heard. Marner's game moving away from the net in the playoffs was especially poignant. This dude needs more airtime.
Wow you guys are so smart ... I can't believe you aren't lacing your skates for the next round ... instead of being arm chair quarterbacks on utube......

Just like every year, they will change nothing, pick up some over the hill free agents, then declare Toronto is " one of the best teams in the league ".
I’m a decent right winger. 64, just retired. I wouldn’t be much of a cap hit and I am DEFINITELY strong on the backcheck. I’m not sure why Brad hasn’t returned my agents calls 🤔
Why change anything? The fans will pack the rink no matter what. The Leafs organization is never punished for failure after failure, except for the bleating of the fans and media.
Why do you think Leafs were scoring in droves against Boston during the season? Where are you getting these stats from? You are wrong, it was the goaltending. During the reg. season games between Leafs and Bruins: Marner got 3 pts in 4 games, Tavares got 2 pts, Nylander got 2 pts, Matthews got 4 pts. So where is this scoring domination you are talking about. All year long it has been the goaltending that EVERYONE has been talking about now suddenly that's not the issue. Leafs lost 4-1 in both Boston games March 4th and 7th with Woll in net.
The Laughs are not making the playoffs anymore in a few years. They have traded away picks and talent, they basically have two respectable prospects that are projected to be regular NHLers. The rest of the talent pool is hit an miss, and that's actually being extremely generous.
54 million reasons, all $...impossible to have a balanced team like that. Shanaplan is a failure. Look, their best result is 5 wins out of 16, this year 3/16. Whoever says they are close is delusional.
I'm a long time Bruins fan. My wife is from Toronto and therefore a Leafs fan. I feel bad for her and honestly hope some year they'll come through for her. There's no chirping this year.
9 goals for TML in 7 games is just pathetic! The Shanaplan will NEVER work fire the idiot and Keefe is NOT an NHL coach! Every year we cry that their goalie was too good instead of saying TML just DO NOT SHOW UP IN PLAYOFFS!
Keefe is 3rd active coach in wins and percentage. 10th all time. When your front office fails to provide you the tools to win is that the coaches fault? They had issues with samsonov at start of year and gm failed to do anything about it. Lack of D csused a mental breakdown clear as day. Muzzin out with career ending injury and never replaced. The leafs dont have top 4 D other then offensive minded Rielly. They have a plethora of 3rd pairing dmen playing minutes they shouldn't be. Tavares took a huge step in the degrade, as well as Brodie.Entire front office needs to go!!! The front office failed the franchise, the coaching staff, the players and its fans
Yeah Berube isnt gonna be any better dude made it pass the 2nd round once and that was the cup win . What has Berube done since winning, NOTHING, Berube is not a good coach if your saying Keefe isnt one oh and dont say he won a cup cuz that is lame and can easily be countered. If you want Berube good luck he will wont be any better than Keefe.
You guys talk about the Leafs and what they didn't do like it was theirs to win. The truth they didn't win is because Boston is a better team! Boston played the money game, proved Toronto wasn't a threat, up 3-1, they lose a couple games because they knew they could win when they wanted to, and they did!
Hired Joel Quenneville as coach. Nothing against Mitch Marner, but I always think he holding Austin Matthew back and 34 relying on 16 too much. Trade Marner, nmc, no problem. Talk to the agent privately to get a 10 teams he willing to trade to or banish to Robida Island or sit out the season. Get big up front and back end. Samsanow should be gone.
Matthews won't be happy if they try to move Marner. A more likely scenario would be to keep Marner and offer Tavares a chance to go somewhere to win a Stanley Cup. Matthews is happy, and the fans are happy when the Leafs give him the "C," something Leaf Nation has wanted for some time. Marner may not get the 10.9m contract he covets, but he'll get a small raise to stay with Matthews, likely with some nice bonuses as incentive.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have a “ Culture “ opportunity ahead of them. The teams turnover on a yearly basis is far to high to implement a successful team first winning culture.
They don't have grit the thing that escalates most from the regular season. That's why there's that 3rd line guy with almost the same amount he put up in 82 games. They battle that fraction harder which turns into one turn-over, because of a rushed decision or extra pass because they emerge out of the battle with the puck.
Why does it not say the Avalanche's streak is active at the beginning of the video? They lost in game 7 to Seattle last year and this year they beat Winnipeg in 5, so I don't see how the streak is no longer active.
@@helloimshawn You took him seriously? You "hate" another team out of the sportsmanship of it. Pretty sure he isn't walking around every day in a MAGA hat or something like that tto make sure everyone knows his hate for the leafs. And if he does, that is his life and his prerogative. Let the man live his life. Leafs fan?
@@covrtdesign5279 of course I took him serious, there’s many of these mentally ill people just in the comment sections alone. Can’t help but feel bad for these no lifers : (
@helloimshawn It's called being a sports fan. It's completely normal to love or hate a team. No, my hatred for the leafs doesn't affect me on a day to day basis.
Why do so many think another 1st round loss comes as a surprise? I am a die hard Habs supporter living in Scotland and many of my life long pals support the Leafs. When Leafs lost to a poor Habs team in 2021 playoffs after leading 3-1 in games major changes should have been made. Hugo are signing players with character and Leafs should do same. It has been far too long since a Canadian team (Habs) has won the Cup. I do not care what Canadian team wins it but I do hope it is "GO HABS GO",
The Leafs should've made changes in 2021 too, but they didn't. Instead, they changed nothing, because their management is greedy, and feeds off the hopes of their fans.
The fact that they are the Maple Leafs. I will always be a Leafs fan but these disappointing first round exits have gotten real old real fast. I’m so tired of this 😢
Toronto needs an additional NHL franchise- kind of like New York City with the Rangers, the Islanders and the NJ. Devils. I’d be happy to root for a Toronto area franchise that played against the leafs.
Dubas and shanahan built a small basketball team when football is required in playoffs. Bruins have 12 players bigger than Toronto. Scapegoating betrays the reality.
Marner usually racks up his points in the first few games of a series. As the series becomes tighter and tougher he disappears. Nylander is the opposite. He gets better as the series gets tougher
I'm a Habs fan Love love love what the leafs have been doing for the past 56 years, they are doing all the right things. Leaf fans, don't listen to the media, don't doubt what's been going on. They are doing what works for Toronto teams!!!
The Coach has to march the style of Hockey play, you need a good defensive coach that has reliable 'D'. Lack of effort on Morgan Riely coming back, lack of effort on Mitch Marner, and lack of effort on Samsonov trying to stop the dump in, or poke check. You went to Woll because Samsonov couldn't do the job. Why not use Martin Jones in game 7.
@@NotaGabeItch Nah Bruins fans can be annoying but you can't beat a fanbase instantly hating their goalie and blaming him for the loss rather than just admitting it was a great goal. They want to throw out a goalie who had a .935% in game 7. That's the lowest act I've seen from a fanbase for some time. Guy played his ass off whilst the core 4 failed yet again.
@@louiscypher4186 Like I said it’s just my opinion. I honestly didn’t see any Hate towards Sammy at all. In-fact I saw some praise, besides the first goal he let in; the hate was genuinely shifted on Keefe, Shannahan, and Marner. Also, Woll was never “thrown out”, he was injured towards the end of the third in game 6. That’s why he was never in game 7; According to Keefe and Woll, he was in worst shape the day after and tried to play for game 7, but just couldn’t.
@@covrtdesign5279 It's OT, you can't let Pasta come 100 mph toward your goal with a puck sitting there. You just can't. Leafs in OT were not the same team as in the 3 periods. I really thought the Leafs had this one, even after Boston tied it. Marner didn't pick up his man and Reilly didn't skate back. And Sammy mishandled the bounce off the boards.
@@cashflownpv Others scored too, what are you talking about? ''Without him they don't go game 7'' You could say that about multiple players on the Laughs roster. He carried them to one victory. That's not nothing, but you're trying to portray him as a hero and that's ridiculous.
@@incumbentvinyl9291 regardless he was the best of the bunch. If you get rid of him than you have to get rid of everyone else because they scored less than him. Don't know why you can see that? Who else scored 3 goals?
@@cashflownpv *then They just overpaid him for the next eight years. What world are you living in where you could ''get rid of him''? You think professional teams make their decisions based on one series? You're a comedian, haha! Who else had zero assists? Face it, Nylander won them one game. That's what he did this series. It's better than many others, but it certainly doesn't make him special.
Brad Marchand is 5'9 182 lbs. His counterparts on the Leafs like Marner are creamed in comparisons to him because Marchand will do whatever it takes to win while the Leafs are soft and mostly non physical
It’s all about character, and the leafs still don’t have it. Money doesn’t buy character switching coaches doesn’t create character players create character. Scoring in the regular season doesn’t equate to scoring in a seven game playoff series.
You are spot on only Nylander seems to have what it takes in the playoffs thing are way tighter these guys can't score in those conditions painfully obvious Mathews will never be a playoff performer he doesn't have it
Nylander away for 3 games! Matthews away for 2 games! Will out after 2 amazing games & Misses Game7! How the hell did they even make it to a Game7????!!!
''Will'' Haha! Petty excuses. All teams have injury woes. The Laughs just aren't a team when push comes to shove. They're weak individuals that are born losers.
Weird to say something went wrong for the Leafs - to me it looked to be right on schedule. Anyone not caught up in the Toronto Cult could tell you year after year that this is an entertaining regular season team, but they are simply not built for the playoffs But year after year, the fans line up again, full of hope and delusion that this time it's gonna be different.
Move on from Shanahan. It's been 10 years. The Leafs are still living in the wake of Dubas' "brilliance." Good bye Keefe. Get what you can for Tavares. They will likely need to eat some of his contract in a trade, but move on. Marner should fetch something in the summer; Reilly, as well. Try to find a No. 1 goalie - at least try. AT TIMES, this team played playoff hockey, which I haven't seen since 2017 against the Capitals. I like some of the moves by Treliving.
If only the Leafs had a Stanley Cup winning coach who had been vetted by THREE hockey organizations, including two Olympic committees, and had three former players in his locker room as part of those decisions (two of them Captains). OH WAIT, THEY DID!!! And they fired him because he: 1) messed up a demo and hurt Marner's feelings; 2) didn't start Spezza and Modano on milestone nights and...hurt their feelings; 3) didn't give player X's ice time, and..hurt X's feelings. Are you seeing a pattern here? OH, WAIT! Forgot the worst one: 4) Apparently, he hurt the feelings of... do I dare say the name? JOHAN FRANZEN! Oh, the humanity! Don't feel bad, Leafs fans. His next organization asked him to resign because.... are you sitting down? Are your kids out of the room? Are the lights on? HE ASKED PLAYERS TO LOOK AT THEIR..... PHONES! All because one player griped to brain trust Bisonnette because.... say it with me... his FEELINGS WERE HURT! Somewhere, Babcock is relaxing with his full Blue Jackets contract payout and whatever the Leafs still owe him. Good for him.
It just shows you how tough the Atlantic division is. It's not like the Maple Leafs suck. I'm sure For Maple Leaf fans the maddening part is that this team has been in cup contentilon awhile now.
The Maple Leafs suck, end of discussion. Matthews probably won't go, but Marner and Tavares need to go. So does Rielly. Knowing the Leafs' luck though they'll just suddenly become good players in the playoffs and win a Stanley Cup with a different team.
