They had the best Transformers movie, the most mature one mind you….. And they marketed it like it was Illumination-tier toddler slop.

Probably most showings of Inside Out 2 (which everyone saw) had the TF One trailer. But they never used the second trailer. Always the lame first trailer. They should've used the second trailer as the first one.

@@kevinp.h157: I've never understood all the hate for the first trailer either. It always felt like a much-needed breath of fresh air to me. This isn't just a prequel, it's a reboot, far more so than Bumblebee ever was. The most important thing the TF1 trailer did was make it very clear that this movie was going to be nothing like the preceding films.

i personally think we are now in an era where box office numbers can no longer be used to see if a film is a success or not. we need to wait for streaming numbers and home release sales. theater prices are just ridiculous now and the pandemic changed how people treat movie experiences now.
@jonathandelgado3755
@jonathandelgado3755 2 дня назад
I agree. The way we consume media is just so different compared to 4 years ago. You have to be a BIG, consistently reliable name to pull in theater tickets nowadays. Otherwise most people will just shrug and say “I’ll just watch it on stream. Since I’m already paying for that.”

I forget which actor said this, but we didn’t use the Box Office numbers before Streaming. That’s why movies feel so safe nowadays

Agreed. Most movies are box office flops nowadays because very few people go to see movies in theaters. It's expensive and a lot less convenient than waiting for streaming (especially for a family to go to a kids' movie). You could tell Paramount had NO Confidence in this movie for a few reasons which led to it getting invisible marketing 1. most studios still only view animation as a kids thing 2. ROTB Flopped which is likely causing Paramount to lose faith in the brand (Even though the Word of mouth for this movie made it clear people are sick of the Michael Bay type of movies not the brand) this resulted in them basically sending this movie to die
@expandapantsii341

I wouldn't say ROTB flopped, but it didn't make the waves due to heavy competition and only barely broke even with its budget. But the fact that movie made 439 million compared to One's 113 million might convince the heads to just go forward with the live action movies, because Paramount doesn't respect the fans at all
@syafiqjabar
@syafiqjabar День назад
The Michael Bay movies are only played out with mainstream audiences. They're actually getting very popular with fans again since they're almost 20 years old by now. So if you make a new Transformers movie "for the fans" it definitely have to recapture the vibe of the Bay movies even if Bay refuse to direct it. Good example would be the recent two Bad Boys movies. But of course mainstream audiences are not going to necessarily like that. We saw that with Rise of The Beast not doing as well as Bumblebee or The Last Knight.
@syafiqjabar
@syafiqjabar День назад
Star Wars actually made the mistake of trying to move away from the Prequels with Episode 7 right when the people who grew up on PT are now the main audience for Star Wars. You saw how they tried to attract Prequel fans in every Star Wars after that, like making sure Mace Windu and Ahsoka have voice cameos in Episode 9 to showing Din Djarin piloting a modified Naboo Starfighter. But the ST were commercially successful because they came out after Star Wars had a long hiatus. Maybe Transformers need to stop making movies for a while. Even Marvel is having issue getting good box office for every movies now. They absolutely need a break for a decade.
@expandapantsii341
@expandapantsii341 День назад
@@syafiqjabar could actually work, put the franchise on hiatus at least in terms of box office movies, plan your entire franchise during the hiatus and when people start to miss it or it’s been long enough start marketing the first movie. Only issue is big people in the company probably see things in short term rather than long term so I don’t think they would do that

It was 110% marketing. The release window prolly didn't help, tho. They put it out the same week as The Wild Robot (which seemed to do MUCH better with families and the type of crowd who would flock out to see an animated movie) and Joker 2 (which sucked, yeah, but it was a highly anticipated sequel to one of the most successful films of the past ten years, it was gonna smash at the box office regardless, at least during its premiere) so that certainly couldn't have helped matters. But I think marketing was the big motivating factor in people not wanting to go see it. Whoever cut that trailer together should've been fired because it doesn't represent the movie I saw - twice - at all. Makes it look more like a Joss Whedon penned comedy and while it certainly has Whedon esque humor in places, its a far more serious and better written movie than the trailer made it seem. Brand oversaturation prolly didn't help either; I know they've pretty much all but confirmed this has nothing to do with the Bayformers movies now but most people more than likely assumed this was still in that universe and after seven films I imagine people are pretty darn tired of the franchise on the big screen, especially when they've only gotten worse instead of better. It's a real shame, too. This movie wasn't a masterpiece or anything but it was good and really didn't deserve to bomb imo.

THANK YOU for the mention of The Wild Robot. While being opposite that was not the sole reason for TFOne's struggles, it basically set up a "which robot movie do you want to see?" contest between Paramount and Dreamworks. Guess what? Dreamworks has a history of animated films for kids, especially somewhat older ones. Meanwhile, someone somewhere cut a trailer for TFOne that basically aimed it at the exact same audience...which isn't what the movie is intended for at all. Add in franchise fatigue reminiscent of Enterprise/Nemesis era Star Trek, and you've got a major marketing problem that some Lunchables isn't going to fix. As for it being a prequel? That should never have been part of the message. It's a prequel to what? The Bay movies? The tone, setting, and visuals don't make that very convincing for the average viewer, who is by all accounts sick of that sort of movie. G1? No, "War Dawn" and "Five Faces of Darkness" pretty neatly give a different origin to that, and that's not a way to appeal to a mass audience, especially if you want people to watch it who weren't even born in the 1980's. No, instead of "Come see how it all started", sell this as a complete and utter reboot. It's not like the overall franchise has never done that! Market it as "An all new story. The beginning of a whole new Transformers."

Bumblebee was the highlight of the live-action Transformers movies, but ROTB pretty much threw away the good will by going back to what we've seen in the previous five movies. But yeah, cramming pretty much every joke in the first half of the movie into the first trailer hurt Transformers One. Then The Wild Robot ran off with any chance One had at legging out. (not throwing shade at The Wild Robot; I hear it's incredibly good)

Basically strong word of mouth when it left the theater got us the other two spiderverse films. I don't know if TF One will get the same treatment, but Dungeons and Dragons Honor Among Thieves did very well on streaming recently. So who knows. The reasons for failure: 1. Bad robot designs should have really embraced the old Dreamwave styles 2. Bad marketing 3. Poor timing, a kids movie coming out just when kids gone back to school 4. To many bad movies in a row, Rise of the Beasts was OK, but the film suffers from bad characters and a general lack of character development for much of the cast, one Autobot, he barely in the film and exists primarily for plot convince to get the cast from A to B and then pretty much disappears from the movie!! 5. Bad title choice, Transformers one feels more like a production title than an actual title for a film!! 6. Movie ticket prices and other expenses! 7. The economy, not everyone can afford to go to the cinema these days, for me, the cost just shot up as I now have to travel further as my local cinema just closed down as it was deemed unprofitable so now I got to add in extra travel costs if I want to see a movie in cinemas so I got to spend time sitting on the bus to get to the cinema, so the last movie I saw locally was TF ONE!!

I do however expect Optimus Prime to sound a certain way. He needs to have to deep heroic commaning tone. Part of the reason I think people were put off by the trailers is because it looked like a Celebrity Voice cast movie where the celebrity doesn't really match the character they're playing, they're just speaking in their regular voice. Like in the Trailers I never heard Optimus Prime, I only heard Chris Hemsworth. In the actual movie though he actually does do the Optimus Prime voice. The celebrity voices were not nearly as distracting in the actual movie as I was worried they would be. And a lot of the complaints before the movie came out was about the celebrity voice cast instead of using real voice actors.

Hey TJ, nice video. I thought you might be interested to know that Australia isn't some randomly selected country the corporates in charge of marketing for the movie decided to throw marketing and merchandise at for no real reason. It was actually a smart strategic decision that could have suceeded but ultimately didn't pay off. Chris Hemsworth, a big name Australian actor being in the movie by extension makes advertising for the movie in Australia a logical choice to get the locals interested. Also advertising to newer less traditional markets besides America is a good idea as it gets more people familiar with the brand and it generates interest from people who wouldnt usually be interested, thus hopefully making more fans and selling more tickets. I don't know if youve ever been to Australia, TJ- but Australia isnt some obscure country in the middle East. Its a big country, a western country, an english speaking country, and culturally many trends and peoples interests such as the shows that people watch, the hobbles people have and the games people play mirrors that of the USA and Canada. There are MANY Australian transformers fans. Throwing more money into marketing in Australia actually made sense for this particular movie. It just didnt pay off. What did not make sense was not throwing the same levels of marketing for the movie in the USA, as they did for Australia. It is true, the marketing for this movie was worse than all of the other movies, but it wasn't terrible like many people are saying. It was nowhere near as good as it should have been, but it was not terrible. The marketing we did get for this movie should have been enough to get people to go and see it in cinemas. People say the first trailer and marketing the movie for kids cost the movie , but thats a massive joke as this franchise is literally made to sell childrens toys. Most Transformers TV shows are aimed at kids as well. An animated movie like Minions or Despicable Me which is also targeted at children and families makes boatloads of money in the cinemas. Marketing a movie towards children doesnt mean bad marketing or bad movie. Marketing a movie from a franchise largely made for children doesnt mean bad marketing or bad movie. So the real reason that this movie bombed at the box office, like you said in the video- is because the general public has had enough of seeing transformers movies. Thankyou to anyone who finished reading all of this.

The economy also plays into it. I can't afford to go see it because I'm out of work at the moment, but even people with income have to budget entertainment along with the essentials. For me personally, I don't mind prequels. I know they're going to survive but I like to see the events (when done right) that made a character I like into what they are. I know characters are generally going to survive anyway because of plot armor. Seeing how they get out of situations is what interests me then. What got me uninterested beyond the "Marvel humor" front and center was yet another evil Autobot ruler, which I'm sick of. To me, Autobots and Decepticons (and their various descendants and allies) serve a narrative and meta role, and I'm just not into the modern origins of the Transformers. That's personal taste. I also only have so many hours in my day and I can't watch everything just because someone tells me how good it is. If I could afford to go financially and timewise I would. Since I don't, I'm waiting to see it streaming and if I like it I'll get the home video because I'm pro physical media. Right now I just can't get out there.

Theaters generally keep 50% of the box office (and in other countries like China the split is even higher), so adding the likely meager advertising budget that was spent the "break even" point for this movie is likely closer to $200 million. I don't think it can be overstated just how bad that first trailer was. I've talked to so many people about how good this movie actually is but they still wouldn't see it.
@bowserbreaker2515
@bowserbreaker2515 2 дня назад
I will always say if they used the second trailer as the first trailer and marketed the movie like that, this video wouldn't exist. We could've had another Puss in Boots 2 situation, but we didn't. People were also getting tired of Transformers movies, but if they had a good marketing campaign people might've looked at it and said, "Hey, maybe this will be good. I might watch it." Putting it out on DVD and Digital a month after the theatrical release doesn't help.

With any luck, hopefully this will show HasTak that there is a STRONG need to re-image how it sells the brand to the broader public and what it chooses to prioritize. I feel like the past half decade or so, for however great a toyline or show is, there is always some kind of asterisk to be added to qualify it in terms of performance. Idk I just wish they would make up their minds about the direction for the franchise and STICK TO IT. Cuz lord knows Earthspark and Rise of the Beasts being beaten up in terms of ratings and toy sales hasn’t exactly helped things, regardless of fan perception of those entries. Also, Lorenzo and co not committing to a timeline doesn’t really help much…

People act like marketing the film like a children's movie ruined its chances... like animated kids movies aren't often successful? Freaking Minions made a billion dollars. I wish it had done better, but this franchise was able to survive for decades without theatrical movies. It's become clear that Transformers just isn't appealing to wide audiences right now. For now we might just have to deal with getting toys and comics for the most part. Hopefully it's our turn again in the future.

Honestly, I'm glad that you brought up the point about Peter Cullen. The deification that some Transformers fans have for him is getting kinda weird and excessive at this point, and like you said, disrespectful of the other people who have portrayed the role. Batman and Spider-Man fans can accept different actors and voice actors playing the role, but Transformers fans seem to want to cling to just the one person, and it's just tiring. I agree with most of the points here. The marketing and lack of good toys contribute to the movie's seeming lack of success. It really sucks that the best toy of the main character right now is an expensive Takara exclusive. But I think one big factor that's not really talked about is that ever since Covid, people just don't seem to think it's worth it to go to theatres anymore. When I went to see the movie in cinemas, I had to sit through at least THIRTY (!) minutes of trailers and ads before I got to see the actual movie. Some people (especially kids) probably don't have the patience for that anymore, and would rather just wait for the movie to go on Streaming services.

I grew up with both Peter Cullen/Frank Welker and Garry Chalk/David Kaye as Optimus/Megatron, so as long as they are good, I don't care. Some people can't afford to go to the movies anymore - like me - I wait for the DVD release because it's cheaper than a movie ticket and I own it afterwards. I don't do streaming services because I have to work and with how many there are, it's a waste of money each month.

It's funny to think 8 movies in 17 years is too much, when you look at Marvel. Not as much variety in the Transformers universe by comparison, though. The first trailer didn't do the movie any favors. Gave a bad perception and impression, as you said. Hmm I did see some ads during WWE programming and I believe Toonami. I hope this doesn't mean we don't get a sequel, since this movie was so good and set up the sequel so well.

A few factors -RotB was disappointing so this movie suffers because of that -The first trailer advertised it as being made for kids with cringe humor Marvel style -Being an animated movie coupled with the previous point only solidified that idea -The movie releases way later everywhere else. It has yet to release here. -Lorenzo spreads misinformation about the movies that this is a prequel to bumblebee that is a prequel to rise of the beasts that is a prequel to 2007 transformers... So Megatron kills Sentinel Prime here, but later he makes a deal with him to save Cybertron in DotM, while sentinel was enslaving Optimus in here but by the time of DotM Optimus saw him as a respectable mentor, also Optimus gets the matrix here but apparently loses it so that the primes, that are already dead in here travel to earth and hide it from the fallen that in one is actually a good guy here and is already dead, but somehow is alive in RotF and wants to genocide Mankind after waging a war against the other primes... Honestly on this last point the blame lies on who still listens to Lorenzo and not on Lorenzo himself, because he has made it abundantly clear that he never saw any of the movies. The only thing related to transformers that he saw was how much money they made which is why he's tying everything to the Bayverse, because he longs for those sweet billions again.

The first trailer was a great example of anti-hype. Releasing what was ostensibly a kids movie right around the time of back to school was also a bad move. This was just a bad year to release this movie. It faced some strong competition during the summer from Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine. Christmas is out because of Moana 2. There was just no time slot where it could succeed. It is weird how the trailers tried to capture that Illumination style humor while also refusing to go up against Despicable Me 4.

The marketing was bad, yes, but I also believe there were three other major factors that killed TFOne’s chances. First, *the designs were too far from what general moviegoers expect out of Transformers.* As much as we fans love TFOne’s shift towards more Sunbow-y designs, the Michael Bay films’ greeble-heavy, realistic designs are what casual audiences expect out of the franchise. Ergo, these designs struck casual viewers who only knew the Bay films as odd and too unlike what they know Transformers to be. Second, *The Wild Robot happened.* It was a new IP and a wholly original film going up against (to general moviegoers) what seems like the eighth installment in a franchise that seemed past its prime by movie number 5. That, and just compare their first trailers- TFOne led with the dumb kiddy jokes you’d expect from a bad DreamWorks film and DreamWorks put out a masterful trailer for TWR that communicated the film’s vibes leagues better than the “Badassatron” joke ever did for TFOne. Lastly, *TFOne came out at the wrong time.* If there was a time to release a wholly original animated film meant to reinvigorate the franchise, it would’ve been after The Last Knight. Paramount should’ve canned Bumblebee and waited until the late Bayverse stank was gone from the franchise to release TFOne because then people would’ve been willing to give it a chance. The Bay films had gotten so bad that they indirectly tarnished any attempt at new, good TF movies. Casual moviegoers don’t go in expecting these films to have heart because Bay and Lorenzo burned them so many times. And that’s the tragedy of TFOne’s failure. It could have done well if Paramount and Hasbro recognized the brand damage they were inflicting on Transformers and decided to hold off on new movies until the new starting point of TFOne was ready. Think of it like the gap between Batman and Robin and Batman Begins- the former failed so badly that it made WB hold off on new Batman movies until Nolan came along and breathed new life into the IP. Transformers needed something like that, and it didn’t get it.

Hasbro toys in store are bad. I see Studio Series One is coming but why is that not on shelf? NOW! It should be in stores now. You watch the movie, you want the toys. My husband (I collect TFs) was asking me why I haven't gotten the toys. He wants them. That ball was seriously dropped. Whomever made that decision to release the garbage we got and what should be out. . . . Advertising could have been so much better. Whatever was paid for it and whomever did it was a waste and should consider career change! I didn't know there was Burger King toys. Where's the merchandising for the movie? Shirts? Anything?

I used to defend the Bayverse movies for saving the franchise from disappearing into obscurity. I can’t anymore, because now the franchise is in more danger of disappearing into obscurity than it ever was before and it’s because of how people view the franchise as a whole thanks to the Bayverse. People who aren’t already fans will just hear the name Transformers and no matter what version it is they’ll automatically think it’s just more toilet humour slop with women reduced to sex objects and unfortunate racial stereotypes. Transformers One is none of those things, but general audiences couldn’t be bothered to find that out for themselves. I love this franchise with all my heart, but my days of saying the Bayverse saved the franchise are over. Yes, it revived it in the short term. Short term success with the price of long term damage. Thank god this franchise isn’t anywhere close to a dying brand.
