Mahayana is Hinayana but Hinayana is not Mahayana . Hinayana is the base of Mahayana ,they are not two different school . The difference between them is just like the difference between college and school. We can't say school is different thing and college is different thing, To reach college one has to go through school right. Just because you see a difference in the way of learning and teaching doesn't mean they are totally different . Hinayana is like school and if someone is ok with schooling only then they are good there and if someone wants more knowledge then they could join a college Mahayana .
