If time is an illusion, it becomes very real when one has been sitting in the Zendo too long on the wrong cushion!

''What would Buddha do?" I believe he'd do the next sober thing. Some members of AA suggest doing the next sober thing as an act of mindfulness. Did you eat? Wash the dishes. Did you get out of bed? Make the bed. I realize not everyone has a background in the 12 steps, my post is a personal observation, nothing more. The combination of Zazen and a program of simple sobriety has made my life livable again. 🙃

Speaking of Science Fiction and Buddhism, shout-out to Roger Zelazny's classic Lord Of Light (which i'm now tempted to re-read, and mayhap if you're after something for your flight to Europe, you might also be?), but i was wondering if you'd read Terry Pratchett's Thief of Time? Lots and lots of fun, i heartily recommend, and will certainly be at the airport bookshop!

I like Norman Waddell & Masao Abe’s version in “The heart of Dogen’s Shôbôgenzô” (2002): “We set the self out in array and make that the whole world. We must see all the various things of the whole world as so many times. These things do not get in each other’s way any more than various times get in each other’s way. Because of this, there is an arising of the religious mind at the same time, and it is the arising of time of the same mind. So it is with practice and attainment of the Way. We set our self out in array, and we see that. Such is the fundamental reason of the Way-that our self is time.” I’ve wondered if Dogen’s “setting the self out in array” had anything to do with Tiantai’s meditation practice of Zhiyi's "One Moment of Experience as the Three Thousand Aspects of Existence." (See Chapter 9: Experiencing Tiantai in Brook Ziporyn’s (2016) “Emptiness and Omnipresence.”) I still cannot figure out what sources Katagiri used to derive the theory he presents in Chapter 12 TIME, SPACE, AND BEING of “Each Moment Is the Universe”: “According to Buddhist teaching, everything exists together simultaneously in a moment. …” “Time seems to be separate from beings, but actually there is no separation. From moment to moment, all sentient beings exist together as a completely independent moment of time. When the moment begins, all sentient beings temporarily appear as particular beings in the stream of time and seem to have their own separate existences. When the moment ceases, all sentient beings disappear, but they do not go away; they are interconnected smoothly and quietly in timelessness. …” I cannot see how he could have derived this theory based solely on Uji.

Just listened to Terrence McKenna on hyper dimensional understanding, after listening to this i enjoyed the uji and the I Ching versus wave theory,, separate moments and novelty ,complexity.not making sense is oracular in time,,,but brads you cypher great thought experiments, write a book about all the random thoughts bouncing around in your head,,,mirror the new complexities without any need for justification, paraphrase or translation , i am ready to absorb the latest version of the divine light projected through the hardcore brain of brad,,,, i have my own mirror of reflection arraying it into this universe now, so not judging anything just entertaining more time versions on this magical visit in time

Why is it that so many zen teachers/masters have trouble with being-time and time as understood by Dogen? I understand it in the way that you stated in this video. And, in no way whatsoever, am I special. If anything, I feel inconsequential as pimple puss in the entirety of this moment. However, I would like to have that last strawberry popsicle in the freezer. Viva Ziggy! Safe travels!

Hi , how about zen immigration to the west ? I am aware that this is a theme in some (2) of your books that I’ve read but I think that addressing and considering the human condition in the west and the way it may affect practice is something I would be very interested to read about. I am aware that this is a complicated and controversial business but someone got to do it because it’s happening anyway and I feel at times the baby goes with the bath water. Thanks.

i dunno... I think as the cosmology goes the buddha waited in heaven to be reborn in the human world at a specific time and place... he is thought to have agency that way...

So. Temporal manipulation is only a matter of time. But it’s not Mike J Fox in car. Very soon physicists are going to experiment with sending particles particles back and forth in time. It’s already kind of happening. I kind of hope it doesn’t work, but I’m afraid that it will.

"That scene where Jesus tosses the money-changers out of the temple...you might have Buddha do that" Thats exactly what would happen if Buddha encountered any Mahayana or Tantric tradition. You see...I told ya my teaching would eventually be corrupted by time.

You still ought to write some kind of fiction though, even if the story is nothing more than a bunch of fictional conversations between people about zen, like a Linklater movie.

But would Buddha have a Facebook page? I suppose a lot depends on whether he got here via some kind of timetravel machine or whether he was born here and bothered to sit zazen at all. Anyway, if he is born here, I hope he doesn't turn out to be too much of a jerk - that would be bad press.

How so? They incorporate several practices that are typical in cults: Sleep deprivation, meditation, cutting out sex, full activity control, retreats, etc. Buddhism isn't a cult per se, but there are a lot of cults in Buddhism: Shambala, Rigpa, NKT, Soka Gakkai, Diamond Way, etc.
