i grew up to very devout mormon parents (not in the US, though), and when i came out, they said: 'you are our son, we love you and nothing will ever change that.' we've had our rough patches along the way, but overall they always put my happiness above their belief system. when i brought home my first boyfriend, my mom later hugged me with tears in her eyes, and said: 'i can truly see that you are happy.' i know i may be extremely lucky, but not all mormon parents/families are horrible.

I tried to come out as bi when I was 13. I've had feelings for girls and guys my entire life but never said anything to my parents about liking girls too because they always talked about "when you have a husband and children". Well, I tried to come out at 13 by telling them I had feelings for one of my female friends, and they got REALLY upset because I was "going around telling people my sexuality", which was not what happened. I was dating a girl and people ASKED me if I was gay and I'd clarify. They prevented me from having sleepovers with ANYONE and told me I couldn't hang out out with ANY of my friends after school. After her and I broke up I told my parents about it and told them I was "experimenting", but it's been three years and I can say with certainty that I'm still bisexual and always have been. Even after I tried to tell them I had crushes on girls in elementary school they said "no you didn't", as if they were me and understood how I felt as a kid. "Bisexuality isn't a thing" "the only people I've heard say they're bisexual are drunk men at parties" "0.0000001% of the world consists of people who say they're a fan of both parties" "if you're gay I'll still accept you and if you're straight I'll still accept you, but there's no possible way you could like both unless you were purposely rebelling against us" these are things my mother have specifically said to me. I don't feel accepted and safe in my own home. Neither does my sibling, who also revealed to me that they're bisexual as well. As soon as I turn 18 the first thing I'm gonna do is pack up my stuff and leave, because then they can't dictate what I can and can't do anymore. My friend and I have already discussed a plan w/ each other that we're going to live together and help pay off the rent 50/50, so it makes it easier to afford an apartment. I'm so tired of hiding myself and it'll be such a relief when I don't have to anymore.

I am a Mormon girl. Different family acts differently in that situation. I was taught to be kind, loving and understanding to Gay people. They are still humans, yes we don't necessarily agree with them but we still treat them kindly. Gay people don't automatically go to hell.

Ok I'm scrolling through the comments and I see all these people freaking out and saying hurtful things about Mormons. I have a story. My best friend is Mormon and last year almost everyone who knew he was Mormon would pick on him, call him names, come up to him and say to his face he is wrong, and I couldn't do anything about it because I kind of thought he was wrong too. But in May he invited me to a meeting, which I went to with him. I learned that all the myths that I heard at school were completely wrong, and that the main principle of the Mormon church is to love one another and respect their agency. I am now a convert and everyone in the comments saying these hurtful things, please attend a meeting or at least visit the website before you spread these rumors around even more.

One of my muslim friend came out as gay to his parents. And his parents torture him so much that he committed suicide within a month after coming out and the worse part was his parents was not even affected by his death. They were like " It's better to die then being gay" Now the thing is I am gay but I very afraid to come out tho I am not a muslim but still I am afraid.

I'm in a Mormon family, and straight. My parents don't support gay marriage but I do. I have friends who are gay and lesbian and they are funny, awesome people. I think it's adorable when I see a gay or lesbian couple kiss or hold hands/hug. Love is love. I think that if a dude wants to be with a guy then he should and if a girl wants to be with a girl the she should. If a girl and a guy wants to be together then I think they should.

I can tell you, most Mormons are not like that. While I myself am not LDS anymore, I grew up in the Church for 16 years, and the rest of my family is still very much Mormon. When I came out to my family, they were very accepting, and I know they still love me. And believe me, I've had my experiences. Not so much at myself, but at my sibling, who is non-binary. They changed their name, they wear androgynous clothing, and are currently trying to switch to "they/them" pronouns. When they told our grandparents (who are also Mormon), they REFUSED to call them by their legal name and preferred pronouns. But that doesn't mean they're ALL like that. And I know this is just a theoretical family, but this is going to put Mormons in a bad light. Sorry if this seems ranty, but I get really defensive about this, even though I've left the Church. I think it's because I don't associate it with myself anymore, but my family. It feels personal.

If is tough for the parents just imagine how tough is to be son/daughter. 😢 A lot of homosexuals become orphans in a matter of minutes. The world is tough enough to deal with something like that.

I am a proud, active member of the LDS (Mormon) faith. Trust me- this is not how we are taught to treat our children gay or not. I would never in a million years treat my child this way if they came to me and told me they were gay. Love is at the forefront of everything we are taught to do. Those who would treat their child this way, in my opinion, are not living the gospel we are taught. And side note: The sister wives you mention are not members of the LDS faith, they are FLDS, a different religion that the Mormon church does not associate with.

I'm a 12 year Mormon girl I have always been taught to love and be kind to people no matter what race belifes or gay or not YOU ALWAYS treat some one with respect even if you don't agree with them. It's hard yes most people (Mormons) don't agree with this but my cousin is gay she's gone through some hard times with the church with people expecting her but she made that choice not her mom dad that is all her we all love her and her girlfriend they are amazing. Accept everyone no matter what race, religion, sex. Always respect people!
