Patton was used effectively. He would have been a disaster at a top post.

The right man for the task given him. He has zero interest in the azz kissing required in the higher ranks.

True. But the war in the East had been going on three full years before the Allied invasion of Normandy. One must be aware of battle tempo. The war in Europe concluded 11 months after D-Day. The operational tempo against the Germans in France and then across the Rhine allowed the Red Army to roll up the Wehrmacht out of Russia and through eastern Europe and into Berlin.

The invasions of Normandy were to liberate France. Along with Belgium and the Netherlands. Followed by invading Germany itself. That was accomplished.

Also remember the Soviets were on the Germans' side during the first two years of the war - and would have continued supporting Adolf if he hadn't double crossed them. Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact.

Patton didn't have the temperament to command anything but a field army. Smartest decision Eisenhower made was to keep him out of D-Day due to the cooperation required.

@@timmylean most of the commanders now a day only work for the military industrial complex and that why the United States can't win a war give me Patton!

Today is not 1944. Whom would old Blood & Guts attack today? Rambo was pure right-wing fantasy.

My uncle, who bravely died in the meat grinder of the Huertgen Forest, was a pacifist before the war, a gentle soul who studied languages and history. He was not at all like Patton but was nonetheless a very brave and dedicated soldier when things got real.

Patton's speech! Epic!

Paton was an incompetent ego manic, and not particularly a good general, unless he had an overwhelming advantage over the enemy. He sowed discord amongst other generals, and caused problems with other allies

Interesting text of Ike's supposed speech. However at 1:20 he references the toll which The United Nations have extracted from Germany. The only problem is that The United Nations wasn't founded until October 24, 1945, well over a year after the June 6, 1944 Normandy landings.

American leaders were referring to allies as united nations , not as a formal organization but international force. An early indication of their love for globalism. We're now reaping the "benefits."
