This kind of confirms what I thought all along about Lee with regards to black troops, and blacks as a whole. Though its impossible to deny that he was a white supremacist like most of the time, he was certainly open to the idea of African American troops in the Confederate army under certain conditions and that did put him at odds with much of the Confederate government. And he also realized that the North was rapidly turning it into a winning issue for them by portraying themselves as the good guys and the liberators. Which for all intents and purposes, they did take on that roll and beat the South to the punch. Forever staining the South's cause to be completely in slavery.

Henry Wirz was a scapegoat. The Confederacy asked the Union for prisoner exchanges numerous times, warning them that they didn't have enough food, their requests were denied. Wirz barely had enough food to feed his camp guards, never mind the prisoners themselves. Blame Sherman for Andersonville, basically. Georgia was the Breadbasket of the Confederacy, the Rape of the South was what caused the famine. Such tragedies happened on the other side as well, such as at POW camps like Point Lookout, despite the North having little problems with food shortages, not to mention cruel torturous punishments for the slightest breaking of rules (such as the Spanish donkey)

your kinda one sided aren't you? showing blurred piles of rebels and lots of places of victory for the yanks. and you showed none of the places where Lee's troops sent the yankee's running for washington! remember the yanks won 3 important battles but the Rebs had a 70% win stats over Grant. till the a hole sherman destroyed the south and it's people. if your going to tell the story tell the story from both sides.

Sherman was the greatest general of the Civil War and I would argue the greatest American general ever. Incredibly insightful strategically, constantly clever and expert in his tactics, inspiring to his troops - about whom he cared greatly, not a self-promoter but instead a great friend to Grant. A remarkable man. He essentially invented modern warfare - using blitzkrieg and maneuver tactics, population manipulation and morale tactics, prescient.

George M. Todd was a leader on the raid. He grew up in North central Missouri. I am reasonably certain that he is "family"? We come from the same area. He died later on in a battle near Independence, MO. The border war was vicious. A lot of war crimes on both sides. The Union had blood on their hands as well.

It’s funny, you always talk about Andersonville and the hunger of the prisoners, failed due to the union blockade, hunger of the guards, to a lesser extent. But you never talk about the Unionist prisons, like Elmira, where prisoners were starved out of sheer envy of their guards, and suffered a fate quite similar to that of the Unionists in Andersonville, identical mortality rate ...

Every time I reflect on the Civil War, it makes me exceptionally sad. My great-great grandfather fought for the south and died from his wounds in the horrific Battle of the Wilderness - I've been to his Virginia grave, multiple times. Essentially, the middle and lower class Southerners got sucked into what was really a rich man's war - sold to them as being a fight for their homeland and heritage. But if you think about it, it was the wealthy, planter class and slaveowners that had the most to lose - because slavery enabled their livelihoods and wealth. Common people had no large acreages or slaves. How foolish to fight a war that could have been avoided, just to mostly protect the interests of Southern elites, as that war absolutely decimated the South for many years to come, and killing a generation of young men before their time. The South didn't have the superior numbers or manufacturing required to sustain a long, expensive conflict. So, the effort was doomed from its very start.

SUGGESTION: As you show the present day picture you should, slowly. overlay the original picture and remove it over a period of 8-10 seconds. By showing the original and the the present day picture, only, you are, most of the time, still describing the original as you are ready to move to the next picture. I do believe you will cause viewers to recommend your site if you will do something like I am suggesting (which allows the viewer to get a good grasp of the 'then' and 'now.'

@sandybruce9092 8 часов назад
Not sure about this particular place but ma y if not most of,those resorts in PA and NY stopped being places people wanted to go! It’s really sad to see photos of these abandoned resorts - times changed and the talent that was there became out of style - I remember seeing Bride’s magazines when I was in Hugh school in the early 60s that were very cool - round or heart shaped beds, entertainment that begs to class with rock and roll - it was a big honeymoon place plus places where people could go to see big names perform! I don’t always like it but things and times change!

There definitely were telephones in the 1920s - please check your history! My family didn’t live in a stinky apartment - perhaps this was the norm in big cities but not where I was born! Not necessary to blur the photos! Always interested in the Civil War. My great grandfather on my paternal side fought in the Civil War with the Pennsylvania militia for the True Blue Yankees, the Union. And I had a great uncle on my maternal side who fought with the New Hampshire militia also a True Blue Yankee, the Union who died at the Andersonville prison at age 20! He sent letters home which I read where he wrote about eating nothing but potato peel soup and about Sherman's March into Atlanta! Also, saw a brown tinted photo of him wearing his Yankee uniform holding a bayonet. May they all rest in peace~
