Having lived in Zagreb for almost four months now, I generally agree (although I’ve never had a problem getting an Uber). The best thing here are the people. My biggest gripe is the graffiti. It’s everywhere, and it’s not artsy. I’t just ugly and it detracts from much of the great architecture. I lived in Prague for several months last year and, by contrast, Prague’s old town has very little graffiti.

Yeah I only had issues with Uber from the airport but otherwise it was always available. And yes, it's hard not to notice the graffiti. I'm pretty used to it coming from Chicago haha. Thanks for watching!

Tha graffiti came from uncivilized Croatian idiots who don't have love for their country. And most where made in the 90ies. I would love to start a movement to erase them slowly. (Erese the graffiti)

You gotta take into account that Zagreb was hit by a strong earthquake in 2020. Not California or Japan level strong, but Zagreb is near a fault line and there is a general estimate a strong earthquake will hit somewhere in Croatia every 45 years. Most buildings in Zagreb city centre are 100+ years old and a lot of money was invested in reconstruction, so they probably had to relocate funds from grafitti cleaning. There is actually a long grafitti wall in Branimirova street, which were cool grafittis (you can see them in 2011 google street view), but sadly they were tagged over in the meantime. But Zagreb also has a cool street art scene (just google image search "zagreb street art")

The airport transportation shuttle leads to the main bus terminal, which has a tram stop in front of it, where you can use a tram to be in the centre in 6-8 minutes (line #6 Črnomerec). But yeah, there were plans to build a tram line 11 kms long to the airport (over Domovinski bridge via Radnička & Heinzelova street to Kvaternik square), which is imo dumb when you have existing in-use railway tracks within 3 kms of the airport, which means you could run a train directly from the airport to the main train terminal on King Tomislav square, the very centre of Zagreb. Regarding Sundays, usually the stores would close a bit earlier, with some museums working in the afternoon, but malls would be open. However, in 2023., the government pushed through a bill to ban working on Sundays, with store owners having to pick 16 Sundays every year which are going to be workdays. That's why now, if you want to go to a mall on a Sunday, you have to check which one is open on that specific Sunday. With the exception of stores in major transport terminals, ports, marinas, camps, gas stations, hospitals, hotels, cultural and religious institutions and museums. There was a 0-24 store in Savica neighborhood before, but in 2023 due to the new law they now work 8-23. So if you need something asap on a Sunday, hope to find it at a gas station.

Could you please tell me the name of the stew in the video (2:52)? Where can I find a good version of it?
@camdendavid
@camdendavid Год назад
I'm not sure what the stew is called but there's a chef who prepares a meal from scratch twice a week (this was one of his dishes). I'm pretty sure you can find him on Tuesdays and Fridays outside a place called "Cheese Bar." I provide a bit more detail in my '10 things to do in Zagreb' video around the 6:13 marker. Hope that helps!

It's some sort of goulash (gulaš), originally of Hungarian origin but Croats in the north & east eat it. There are countless variations on this sort of dish.
